Happy birthday miss lady! And it was Tyler Perry that started that “damsel in distress” black woman character. If you think back to pretty much all the classics, all the black women in those movies were on their shit. Job. Own crib. Car. And raising they babies with no problems. Go all the way back to Boyz In The Hood. Angela Bassett didn’t send Cuba Gooding Jr to Lawrence Fishburne because she couldn’t take care of him. He wanted to go. And she let him.
