I listened to NPR avidly for decades - started every day with it. Not sure when or why I stopped - life changed. I went back to try to listen again and was shocked. The same canned, "progressive" blather that was taking over all mainstream media was all that was offered.

Look at photos from a newsroom anytime before the last decade or so and tell me who you see. The norms that were established as to what happens and how and why were all established when most of the people in the room were white men. It's just a fact. I think she was saying that the price was just him airing his beef and that he didn't do any research. He says everyone's liberal there without finding out if they were or not. Lazy journalism if you will. Her breakdown on funding was very much on point. Rich conservatives are readily to fund (and keep funding) their ideology than rich liberals. Even the so-called left media is conservative because of their backers (which is way their coverage of Israel is poor).

How is she way off base? She repeatedly acknowledged that outlets like NPR have an establishment bias and she links this to their funding model. NPR used to receive way more public funding and their reporting reflected a broader public interest. But that funding has been almost completely cut. It now depends on corporate sponsorship and donations from a comfortably affluent listenership. Thus its reporting reflects what those sponsors and donors do and (pointedly) do not want to hear.

The new language and ideology around race, gender, etc., definitely affect viewpoints and capture at these institutions. You see it in many professional organizations and the education system as well. You are making the case for why it should be completely cut off (i.e., cut the remaining 11% of taxpayer funding). Even in the 1970s and 1980s, the conservatives never felt it was fair and balanced, even with a higher percentage of government funding. That's why they cheered when Reagan cut funding back then. Thus, in their view, it never represented the viewpoints of both major political factions. The vast majority of views at NPR are mainstream neoliberal and mainstream progressive. However, 42% of the country identifies as independent, 29% as Democrat, and 27% as Republican. Thus, NPR often doesn't even represent most of the country when they focus on Democratic or moderate Republican talking points. That's why funding a state-run "news" network doesn't make sense - it always favors the establishment.

I have about the same timeline as you. I grew up with NPR but after Trump was elected, I left the Left, and NPR.

But Robby chose the topic. If you don’t like race focused segments your issue is with him. And as usual it was Bri who framed the issue in a broader way, beyond Robby’s narrow DEI fixations. She readily acknowledge NPR has an establishment bias and linked this to their funding model. Since its public funding was slashed decades ago NPR’s reporting no longer reflects as broad of a public interest. Why? because it now depends on two main sources of revenue: corporate sponsorship and donations from comfortably affluent listeners. Its reporting increasingly reflects the interests and biases of those sponsors and donors. This is reflected in the stories these focus on and, above all, stories they won’t cover. She brings up all this and all you hear is her talking about race. SMH.

Her world view is stewed on DEI propaganda. Her world would either fall apart or become amazingly more vibrant if she'd take off those DEI-tinted glasses. It's a prison of her own making, but sadly she's trying to make others think in that same limiting way. Be free, Bri! I'll be praying for you.

That's a good point. However, the problem is that the 11% of taxpayer funding should be entirely revoked if they want to cater to a particular viewpoint whose members provide most of their funding. If they are going to do that, their model should be private, like the Daily Wire is doing. It's not like they accurately represent the country's views, so why should they receive any state funding? For example, polls indicate that roughly 30% of the country strongly supports Donald Trump, and 55% of the country views his presidency favorably. Furthermore, in American politics, 42% of the population identifies as independent, while only about 29% identify as Democrats and 27% as Republicans. NPR does not represent the taxpayers, so why should they receive special consideration from the government?

In my country i think it has worked out pretty well. There are many fully publicly funded channels that cannot take private funding, Some left and some right wing, this does allow for more diverse mainstream media perspective. Instead of exculsively that of the richest who can buy media companies. Although i do think this has bedcome more irrelevant with things like youtube. Its still somewhat neccesary for having a fair democracy i think. But has to be managed well
