June 2008
The Harford County Modular Railroad group got together for a weekend last june at Harford Community College in preparation for the big August show in Timonium. Today I'm running an empty coal train on the layout of about 50 modules. The train incorrectly sounds a K5LA horn for the crossing at Steelytown. (Its supposed to be a Leslie RS3L) As a matter of fact, there is almost nothing historically or geographically correct in this video. but I thought it was too cool to not put on youtube. Engines are NS Dash 8-40CW #8366(suprise!) and CR SD50 #6814. (Atlas and Proto 2000 respectively) Engines and NS/CR hoppers are mine. Thanks to Ken for the setting of "Steelytown" and to Roger for the Chessie hoppers, even though they should be behind some Chessie GP40-2's instead of a GE Widecab! The audio is of an NS Dash-9 in Indiana. Thanks for watching!

That would be so cool if model trains could sound like that!!!

This particular show was in August 2008, but between the Greenberg Show and the Great Scale Model Train Show, there are about 6 or 7 train shows in Timonium each year.

It is an Atlas Master Series Gold edition Dash 8-40CW, equipped with DCC and sound that I found on ebay for about half price. You can also get it without sound (silver edition) for much less. The second locomotive is a Life-Like Proto 2000 SD50 that I picked up second-hand at a train show.

@NS8366 Thanks for the info about the lights! when i worked for the rail service i would look for the ditch lights when out on the ground marking a rail. the cn high-railer pick up truck if i recall had strobes in the marker lights. the new rail detection trucks had ditch lighs in the fog lights and i think you could use them as fog and ditch lighs.

You are correct. I've already mentioned the inaccuracy in the video description. The chessie hoppers just happened to be the only ones available at the time to make the train longer than the 18 NS and Conrail hoppers I had on the end.

Its a modular club layout. We dont have a permanent set-up location so we only put the layout together a few times a year. I have more videos from that weekend i'll post in the future.

All of the Chessie and Conrail hoppers and 2 of the Norfolk Southern's are Bowsers. The other 12 NS hoppers are Bachmann Silver Series. They are all very nice cars.

This video reminds me of days i had to call into a software tech support company on old freeport road north of pittsburgh near sharpsburg. The same doppler effect could be heard from the trains down in the a. River valley. I loved that sound and apparently still do!

Atlas did make one in the silver series back around 2005. I dont think they currently produce them but you can usually find them online like ebay and get a pretty good deal.

Im not sure I know exactly what you mean, but those ditch lights (as well as the DCC and sound) came with the locomotive straight out of the box. The lights stay on all the time but they are programmed to flash whenever the horn is blown.

I model the present-day time frame where cabooses on most railroads have been pretty much obsolete for over 20 years in favor of the End-of-Train-device. (Im using an imaginary EOT in the video)

@prorobo
@prorobo 15 лет назад
That's because it IS the sound of a real train dubbed over the video.
@NS8366
@NS8366 14 лет назад
Thats a little bit round. About $220 for the engines, approx. $15 each for 43 Bowser hoppers so i figure about $865 for the train. Add in DCC decoders and metal kadee couplers and that number could easily hit $900.
