In case anybody's still hesitant about nuclear energy due to nuclear waste. ALL nuclear waste created could fit in a single football stadium. Newer reactors produce so much less waste and Thorium reactors can recycle the waste.

Yeah, the problem I have with the french having reactors is, that they have placed many of them near the border to germany, Belgium and the Netherlands and that they're not keeping good care of them (as you should do with a nuclear reactor) so that in case of emergency only we are fucked due to wind streams carrying nuclear material over the border.

Making the existing reactors (the vast majority we'll have for decades then) very sensitive to this phenomenon.

@@hereticgrim There are modern nuclear reactor types which can already recycle nuclear waste. Thorium reactors hardly produce any. These aren’t sci-if concepts, these are tested methods. ALL nuclear waste ever generated would fit inside a football stadium. Nuclear waste isn’t nearly as much of a problem as people make it out to be.

The thing a lot of people in the comments here forget, is that the nuclear energy stance here in germany is not based around the politicians saying "nuclear energy bad". It mainly stems from the people living here. The whole Anti-nuclear in the 70s movement suceeded in getting a pretty big consesn among the population in germany, while it failed in france. Generally a pretty democratic process. It would also be less of a controversy, if the solar energy industry and others were not on life support, after they got kinda destroyed by the government over the last ~16 years.

The only major nuclear accident was Chernobyl though, which directly caused like, 27 deaths? Plus Chernobyl was unique in the way that it was designed. It was created with a specific flaw so that nuclear waste from Chernobyl could be reused to make warheads. Even when they explode, factories today wouldn't do nearly as much damage as people think they would.

Fortunately, the massive disregard for safety and hell-bent quest for money (ironically) that is the Soviet Union has ceased to exist. This means that there will probably be no more significant nuclear accidents, at least not for a long time.

And even then, more people die as a result of coal and oil use than all the people that have ever died as a result of nuclear meltdowns or plants exploding. Heck more people die every year because of cigarettes and cigars and yet people still smoke them.
