Six weeks after partial replacement and yeah, I've a numb patch on the outside of my knee. On a personal level I'm not worried about it. If feeling comes back then great, if it doesn't then as it has no effect on my everyday life I don't give it a second thought.

Unbelievable as I have been wondering what the --- annoying more than anything. For nearly 2 yrs. 7/22/22 Rt Knee replacement the entire knee cap area. Beginning to subside significantly of late. Dr. Rosen, I watched many of your videos after Knee surgery unfortunately did not find any before surgery.... THANK YOU FOR YOUR COMMON SENSE APPROACH TO THIS WORLD. ❤

10 weeks post op left knee and have the numbness on left side. Not affecting movement at all, just the "numb" sensation you described so nothing to really worry about I'd tell others. Dr Rosen your straightforward analogies are great! I'm currently reading through your book The Knee Book I bought on Amazon and these comparisons and answers in plain English are very helpful. Thanks for your videos and all the information!

Thank you for such an informative video. I had my TKR last June (2023) and I have noticed the numbness area is getting smaller. Have missed your videos, I hope you have been well. Take care!

I am 2.5 yrs post-TKA. The numbness has reduced in size as Dr. Rosen suggests. What bothers me more is the lack of sensation and awkwardness when kneeling. I suspect this is because the surgeon shaves off some of the under side of the knee cap to make space for a plastic "button" to fit with the other components. However, I have never been told the exact reason for the plastic piece.

I've have two (consecutive) knee replacements in the past year. The first one was a year ago today; the second was in the beginning of December. The numb patch on the first leg is largely gone, though there still is a bit of reduced sensation right by my kneecap. The numb patch on the second still covers an area that extends from the incision in front to the outer side of my knee, but here too there's a bit more sensation than there was right after the surgery.

Dr Rosen, Thank you so much for this information! I had TKR 10 days ago. I am experiencing numbness around the knee. So this symptom is normal? One less concern to deal with. I hope my recovery and pain will improve over time.

I am 74 , I have to do total knee replacement surgery in a month. I have Polyneuropathy of the fine fibers - skin biopsy to diagnose a deficiency in fine nerves - Pain in ankles and calves, difficulty walking. My knee problem started a year ago. I made MRI which showed Extensive cartilaginous absence grade 4 on both sides of the medial section. The medial meniscus with an extensive tear of a degenerative nature of the body of the meniscus and the posterior horn. The meniscus has lost its shape, its borders and its signal. Small foci of subchondral bone marrow edema and large bony protrusions in the medial section. My question: is it dangerous to do the knee surgery? Do you have any experience of such a case ? Is it better not to do the surgery? Thank you very much for your answer.

Is there any relationship between pattellar button fixation and numbness after tkr?
@dradamrosen

Not that I know of. It is felt to be due to the incision.

I would appreciate if you could answer my question. I am 74, I have peripheral neuropathy, nerve pain along both feet . I am scheduled a total knee replacement in 2 weeks. My Main concern is if the neuropathy pains will increase after the operation ? Do you have experience with such a case?

Impossible to know. Could be the same or worse but would not expect it to improve. If you are not already on medication such as gabapentin or lyrica it would be a good question to ask your surgeon about if it would be beneficial for you.
