True. You must have good nutrition while your young so when you age you will be healthy.😊

Dr Attia, there is a bit of a renal paradox with regard to high protein diets. I am mid 60s and work hard at getting my 1gm/lb of protein. My latest labs showed for the first time in my life an increase in my renal values. Now I am in the position of protecting GFR but still getting protein. Could you address this in an AMA or something?

The question we should be asking is: Do the health benefits of avoiding protein outweigh the health consequences of muscle loss and osteoporosis. My understanding is that the benefits of consuming protein significantly outweighs those other risks especially in the context of healthspan
@aluuusch
@aluuusch Месяц назад
@@5456645 Ok, eitherway I would need much more information from Attina on the context between protein consumption and cancer growth. I read his book and don't recall to have read anything about this at all. And then weighing the one against the other gonna be a mere statistically probability thing which is still not the last word in wisdom.

I am a little bit confused with increased protein consumption. Does protein increase IGF-1 insulin like growth factor and can IGF-1 promote cancer ? Hope that someone will answer my question.

I get the point of distinguishing this important aspect of metabolic health. but while muscle and metabolic health are not necessarily a complete and absolutely overlap, muscle health is not separate from metabolic health. In fact, it is far more associated with metabolic health than separate. Even in the immediate term, not just long-term. Eg The activity of muscle lipoprotein lipase drops significantly and fairly quickly with periods of sitting that could even be as little as 30 minutes. It’s just one reason why - specifically because of metabolism - the American Diabetes Association recommends 5 min of movement for every30 minutes of sitting. While that recommendation is a bit rigid and theoretical, the point is - metabolically speaking - muscle is a very “what have you done for me lately?“ tissue. Investing in muscle now is not just for later, it’s for metabolic health now. Bone is a bit easier to separate. Nevertheless, precision aside, it is an important topic to raise awareness regarding so hats off .

Thank you for this. Something we all know, but still need to hear. Nice, succint summary. However, what about the risk of overconsumption of protein on irreversible kidney damage?

Too much protein activates mTor, which shortens your lifespan. There's a thin line with protein.
@sarahterry2140
@sarahterry2140 15 дней назад
Exactly - I wish Peter would do a deep dive on this. I I vacillate between worrying I cut back my protein too much and am not getting enough to the opposite end of the spectrum for me (which is probably still pretty low) where I up my protein thinking I need more as an older person then I worry about my IGF-1 levels and cancer.

Nobody in the USA is consuming too little protein in 2024. **Unless** they only eat pop tarts and Doritos and doughnuts and French fries. A diet of Pure processed junk food is low in fiber and other macronutrients and low quality nover all in vitamins. Gofor a whole plant food diet and you get the best of everything. Lack of activity exercise is responsible for the lack of bone and muscle. Most seniors who go thru a bout of infection and land in the hospital experience rapid muscle loss. Prevent dizziness as a side effect from the b.p. meds and prevent falls due to UTIs in seniors etc. High Animal protein diets are not the friend of longevity. Too high in methionine. Too low in fiber. too high in saturated fat.
@Re3iRtH

Quality of protein matters. Plant protein is some of the worse for that. Fiber is not great for everyone either.
@hasib223
@hasib223 Месяц назад
If you understood how much protein we actually need then you wouldnt be saying this. Eating excessive fats or carbs are way worse than eating too much protein. Meat is natures chosen path for our protein needs whether you like it or not. Cut out the processed and sugary foods and replace with high quality protein, you will always get healthier, absolutely no question about that.

I think that’s a wrong assumption, just looking at myself (I’m European though). The last 20 years I’ve eaten mostly vegetarian and eaten food that I mostly cooked myself and considered fairly healthy, no sweets and other obviously unhealthy processed stuff. One of the things I didn’t put much attention on was eating protein, I’d add in beans or other pulses occasionally, or an egg, but was not a fan of tofu or other more processed meat replacers. Earlier this year I broke my knee, stupid accident, it was not caused by my nutrition but in the weeks after while recovering I started educating myself about how to regain my muscle mass and realised I’ve been eating way too little protein for many years! When I look at vegetarian recipes, plenty have little or no protein added to them! It’s easy to not get enough if you don’t consciously think about it with every meal you eat.

Anyone that's not a bodybuilder does not know how much protein they're eating. You can literally ask somebody on the street how many grams of protein a normal egg has and if they can't consult google, they'll get it wrong, for sure.

My muscle mass in my 50s is significantly better than it was in my 30s when i ate a olant based diet , as is my general health( and before you ask i ate a very well planned wholwfood vegan diet). I now eat plenty of meat , eggs and dairy alongside lots of fruit and vegetables. For me at least this is the optimal diet . Suggesting a one size fits all diet for everyone, whether plant based od otherwise betrays the reality on the ground which is that there is enormous individual variation in terms of what works for people. The only generic rule i would apply is that eliminating sugar and nutrient deficient junk is a good idea for everyone
