Nutrition Tier Lists: Condiments

Let's all be honest and say that many meals suck without some kind of condiment. A sauce, a dip, a dressing. Just something to enhance the flavor of the more nutritious, and admittedly less tasty stuff. While, this may feel like an unnecessary addition to the series, I've been wanting to talk about the potential damage from overindulgence in condiments for a while, and what better way to do so than with a tier list?
All nutrient data is pulled from the USDA's National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference.

Your videos have encouraged me to add more types into my diet, even if they aren’t the star of the show. Extra carrots in my salad, a few blueberries into my oatmeal, etc. It makes me think of nutrition as a lifelong goal, and it really helps me see my health as something I can be an active participant in. I can highly recommend homemade pesto. It's easy to make, you only need a blender. Since the wild garlic season sadly is over now I suggest making a rosemary-garlic pesto. For my last one I used roughly 50-100g rosemary and a whole bud of garlic. Pine nuts are very expensive, so I used almonds. Otherwise basil pesto is good too, but it's a bit boring unless you use Greek basil (it's a lot more flavourful than normal basil). Overall: Try to make your own dips.

Sheer quantity can be off putting. I used to like sour cream and tolerate cottage cheese. Then I worked two summers being part of a 3 man team filling containers, assembling them into cases, and sending the cases to the warehouse. We filled about 1-2 tons of each product each day. After that I couldn't stand either of them. 35 years later, sour cream is back up to tolerable when a restaurant puts some on food, but if I ever get served cottage cheese again it would still be too soon.

@@Talon_Fitness as you always say, do your own research, and I did. From the few websites I looked up, there's not too many benefits to sweeteners. Molasses and maple syrup (not counting the talking plastic bottle lady) do have as you might say, "impressive amount of," micronutrients. Maple syrup has 165% Manganese (⅓ cup.) So, if you made a tier list which ones is the "best/better" sweeteners?

@@Talon_Fitness Could be intro to glucose vs fructose vs sucrose vs lactose? simple vs compound? artificial sweeteners seem to increase apetite? or the effect on glucose spikes? is fructose worse than glucose on the liver? Agave syrup is advertised as safe for diabetics but because it also has fructose it's easier to be stored as visceral fat instead. Still takes me several tries to wrap my head around the topic

would absolutely love to see a nutrition tier list on various cooking methods EG frying vs baking vs boiling, steaming, air frying, microwave, blanching, sous vide, grilling, smoking, slow cooking etc etc. I know that might not be easy considering it depends alot on the temperatures used, time cooked and what’s actually being cooked in the first place, but would be interesting to hear if theres any general trends / differences between certain cooking methods. (also phenomenal video as always, you’ve genuinely changed how I eat for the better! 😎)

Mine only has 40 kcal per 100g, but it has artificial sweeteners (sucralose) in it.

@@ZTheLastViking That's great. Nothing wrong with sucralose. Most studies point to issues with the digestive system were on mice and 100x-1000x the dose a human would ever consume.

I often want to share your videos with family, but the first questions they ask me are, who is this guy, and why should we listen to him? And truthfully, I don't know enough to convince them to watch. Could we learn a little bit about you? Like, are you a dietitian? A fitness trainer?

Another great, informative video. Most surprising were the ketchup (not as bad as I would have guessed), and the tahini, which I have in my pantry to make some hummus soon. I didn't know that tahini on its own could be so beneficial. Granted, there are other condiments and sauces that you could have covered, as noted in the comments - but the video would have been two hours long - or even longer! I always take a photo of the final ranking list and review them when I am planning food prep and also at the grocery. I appreciate you!

A sweetener tier list could be good. You could include different types of sugars, honey, and natural syrups and nectars.

I have to say Home made salsa made from tomato peels is amazing too. I started with that because my parents discard the tomato peels when making tomato soup. I decided to break them down a bit further by stirfrying them with some olive oil, some herbs and veggies like celery, onion, garlic and pepper. Then blended it. Only added a touch of salt and no sugar. Really good ngl

Video idea for The Real Killers: ultraprocessing. Dive into what it is and the evidence for why it's bad, and the mechanisms to explain why it's bad. I've heard so much about it, but I'm having a hard time combing through the bullshit.

As someone with a large supply of free eggs: whole egg mayonnaise is SUPER easy to make and you can add whatever spices you want. I usually preseason my mayonnaise since the fats will help store the flavor overtime making whatever dish it gets added to have a better depth of flavor
