Highest quality assembly video of the NV4500 I've found. You should be charging for access to this content. It's that good.

Thank you, I appreciate that! I’ve thought about that but haven’t pursued it yet, I’m happy to help people out too but the video was way more work than the transmission.

Still- you should consider this- you have real talent in being able to keep us watching your progress. I could see myself watching this on my phone while putting a trans together…

Thank you for the feedback, I appreciate it! I’ll have to look into options for paid videos like this and if you have any specific recommendations please let me know.

these are fun to rebuild ive done a few now, i just did a nv5600 for the first time and let me tell ya the little detents and springs and balls on the 5600 are 1000 times harder to do then these nv4500s, adding the ball into the mix and there about half the size of these ones makes it basically impossible to do by yourself. Needed a second set of hands to use tiny flat head screw drivers to push down 2 of the detents and balls while i did one on my side while pulling the slider down over them all.
@Pioneer_Classic_Trucks
@Pioneer_Classic_Trucks 2 года назад
Interesting, that sounds much more challenging. I haven’t done a 5600 yet. I have a 5600 in my 98 but it’s only got about 90k on it so far and going strong.
@Sunde53
@Sunde53 2 года назад
@@Pioneer_Classic_Trucks yeah the sheer size of the nv5600 makes it more difficult, some special or custom tools needed for the job, if your handy like you seem to be there easy to make, plus a serious press, i tried with a 20 and 30 ton, wouldnt budge the counter shaft, 50 tons i ended up buying. The detents and sliders are the hardest part of the job, the shift rails look intimidating but they only really go one way.
@Pioneer_Classic_Trucks
@Pioneer_Classic_Trucks 2 года назад
Good to know, yeah I can make special tools or whatever I need so no worries there. I’m sure I’ll do a 5600 at some point, I enjoy rebuilding stuff like this and not scared of a little challenge doing something new.

You can do it yourself by using very small plastic ties to keep them in place till you put the collar on.

Wow man that is clean clean clean… do you know exactly what bearings you used for your fixturing device?? Also is there a list somewhere of the tools you used?
@Pioneer_Classic_Trucks
@Pioneer_Classic_Trucks 2 месяца назад
I don’t know the bearing numbers, they were used from some other project and I have a box full of them I save for press tools etc. No list of tools, I got the 5th gear nut tools from Quad 4x4, snap-on 3/4” and 3/8” torque wrench, snap-on for the large snap ring pliers, measuring tools for setting endplay, I probably used and welder to remove the bearing race for the input shaft, hydraulic press, I think that’s the major things besides common hand tools and a way to clean parts. Judging what parts need replacement and what can be reused comes with experience. Thanks you!

Great detail, great job, i just dont understand why people continue to use RTV not permatex gasket maker #2. Silicone sucks always prone to leakage, form a gasket never leaks and still no problem if you ever need to disassemble.
@Pioneer_Classic_Trucks
@Pioneer_Classic_Trucks Год назад
I’ve used both with good results, I think the rtv came with the kit I used.
@GregariousAntithesis

@@Pioneer_Classic_Trucks i worked hasmat for navy. Rtv has a primer to get it to stick and be bomb proof. Without it rtv always ends up leaking over time because for one people over tighten and dont let it cure before final tighten because they dont want to come back later or dont have the time. Never the less pros are the last ones who should use RTV because they are always in a hurry and hence why the few times i paid anyone to do anythibg it leaked. Oil pans, tranny pans i use the expensive adtermarket bomb proof gaskets with permatex #2 unless its like cast to cast for example then i just use permantex #2 its just a superior product for that purpose

Hey boss I’ve got a dumb question, I’m mid rebuild on my nv4500hd and am winging it, everything went smoothly in my opinion up until I pressed the rear bearing on the main shaft, there’s a bit of play in the reverse gear assembly on the shaft, is that normal?
@Pioneer_Classic_Trucks
@Pioneer_Classic_Trucks 7 месяцев назад
Kinda tough to answer that. A bit of play could be very different depending on who is measuring it, and I’m not sure what you mean exactly. Endplay, or sideways, or???
@sethboothe7930
@sethboothe7930 7 месяцев назад
@@Pioneer_Classic_Trucks the play was in and out, around .008-.010” but all of the gears seemed to have some play in them in and out so I figure it’ll be ok. Thank you for the reply, also amazing video!

That’s from Quad 4x4 in Montana many years ago, not sure if they still offer them or not.

@@Pioneer_Classic_Trucks . Do you have a part number or description I could look up? I appreciate the help!!
@Pioneer_Classic_Trucks
@Pioneer_Classic_Trucks 4 месяца назад
Its a tool from Quad 4x4 for the custom mainshaft kits branded as torque king that they no longer sell, they had a press fit on the rear mainshaft bearing and 5th gear and some cases are too tight to get the shaft into the case with the bearing already pressed on so this tool presses on the bearing after the assembled mainshaft is in the case. If it’s still available it would be under tools on their website. You could have a machine shop make one easily if not.

Castrol Syntorq LT® 75w85w GL-4 rated, low temperature, synthetic gear lubricant is the only factory approved lubricant for NV4500 series transmissions. I use Amsoil 75w-90 in mine.

Educational videos should not include fast-forward portions. I can assemble a automatic transmission, but now I want to learn how to assemble a manual.
