Thanks for taking the time to make this video! I'm about to tear into the NV4500 that I used for my Chummins. It has an issue where it doesn't like to go into any gear after sitting at idle in neutral, such as at a stop light. I have verified that the clutch is fully releasing with the rear tires off the ground, and it releases in the top 1/2 of the pedal. I'm thinking it is probably bad synchros on the 300k mile trans, but we'll see!

Could be the pilot bearing hanging up too, either caused by the bearing itself or excessive end play causing the input shaft to tilt a little.

I had to replace the counter shaft and input shaft on my 94 chevy nv4500. Counter shaft come out with end play at just a little over .002 but after replacing all the bearings The main shaft is far too tight and trying to go back and check to see if all the bearings are seated completely down. At first I was only at .001 end play on the counter shaft but after tapping the front bearing with a punch it gave my a little more than the .002 that I needed. Found out that the pipe I was pressing bearing on with was a hair too small and not pressing the bearing all the way down when using my 20 ton press. Gonna go back and check all the bearing in main shaft and see what it will give me on end play.

I bought a 2wd nv4500 off a guy off facebook marketplace. Was special ordered for a s10 with a v6. Used it on a 5.3ls I put into my wrecker. Lasted 1500 miles. Pto seal blew out on the highway and it locked up. Once it cooled off and filled with fluid...been driving local. But buyer beware with marketplace. I think it had 200k. It will be up for sale as a core when I pull to put in another nv4500. I got lucky and found the proper ls bell.

My "freshly rebuilt" nv4500 was making all kinds of noise. 5th gear stopped working, so took it out the transmission to inspect it. The shift fork had jumped out of the shift coller groove. I have no idea why. I inspected the shift interlocks and everything seems OK. All the synchro teeth looked fine, gears looked fine, 5th gear nut tight, etc As for the noise, I found that the input shaft thrust bearing had disintegrated and the pillow bearing cage was chewed up. I'm wondering what would cause this. I replaced (in the correct orientation )the input bearing retainer, input bearing, the pillow bearing, and the thurst bearing. Long story short, after about 400 miles the transmission is making the noise again and pretty sure there are going to be bearing issues again. It ran great for a bit after replacing the parts and now I'm not driving it for fear of doing more damage. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have a gm nv4500 behind a 12 valve cummins in a k30. It used to be a lil sticky goin into fifth gear on occasion. At one point I was cruisin about 70 and someone cut me off, after a hard brake I tried shifting out of fifth an it wouldnt budge. Eventually came out after a full stop but after puttin it back into fifth down the road it worked but I had to pull the shift tower out to manual get it back into nuetral. Does that sound like a syncro problem or a shift housing issue?all gears an reverse work, I been drivin it with no od for a while but would like to get it back
@TorqueKingTV
@TorqueKingTV 2 года назад
I have talked with several people having a very similar issue. I would check the shift top, make sure that it slides smooth off of the transmission. Pull the tail housing off and inspect the synchro and gears as well. I know it's no fun pulling everything apart but it is really the only way to see what is happening. Any further questions give us a call

Can I ask you a question? I have one of these. The last thing I did was backed it into it's spot. Now I can put it into gear and it doesn't move and it bogs down the motor when you ease out the clutch. I see you put it into two years and it locks up like I think mine is doing. Is there any way you can pop it out of that to get it to go again? Thanks, this video is awesome and gave me great insight to work on it.

You may have lost a roll pin on the shift fork. You can shift everything by hand by removing the top cover. If you don't have a removable floor plate, the transmission needs to be removed from the vehicle.
@robertbrewer2179
@robertbrewer2179 8 месяцев назад
I lost the roll pins on the 5th gear shift fork while the truck was in 5th gear. So was both in 5 all the time and also in whatever other gear you moved the shifter to.

I had rust underneath 5th gear also. My inside top cover was black I noticed yours wasn't. Any idea what causes that ?
@TorqueKingTV
@TorqueKingTV 8 месяцев назад
That "rust" under the gear was probably mineral transfer from oil, it is common to see under close tolerance parts. Black under the cover is not changing oil regularly enough or overheating, and can become abrasive to shift parts or cause a shift rail/ poppet plunger to seize.
@seamansj
@seamansj 2 года назад
Great video. I replaced my 5th gear and nut cause mine kept jumping out of 5th gear and every video I watched said that that nut would back off and make it have that problem. So I changed it. It did have 1 gear broke off. But it didn’t seem like the nut had backed off. Anyways after all said and done, it still jumps out of 5th gear when I’m going down hill. Someone told me that the shifter on top had some “plastic” things that help hold it in place and they could be wore out. Any ideas on that. I have tried to find some videos on the upper shifter and those parts but can’t find any. Any help would be greatly appreciated. 🙏
@TorqueKingTV
@TorqueKingTV 2 года назад
Hi- you have a few issues here as well as a bit of misinformation. When the nut backs off, you will simply have a ghost gear. The shift fork still locks in the countershaft gear, but there is no matching mainshaft gear to accept the power as it has floated back on the shaft. Popping out of gear is usually because the shift poppets in the top cover or syncro struts on the gears are worn or packed full of gunk. The shift tower itself can also wear and wont shift far enough to properly lock the gear in. It could also be the syncronizer teeth themselves have worn to a taper and thrust in 1 direction or the other will disengage the sliding collar for that gear. If you are breaking teeth of either of you 5th gears, that is an indication of excessive countershaft end play due to improper setup or bearing wear. It is also possible that the mainshaft 5th gear is getting loose on the shaft itself even though the nut has not backed off. Keep in mind these transmissions generally need an overhaul before 150K miles, if you are getting close then several of the above issues may apply. Hi- I have heard of people using Hygard in both manual and automatic transmissions. While we can't officially recommend it, I will say that if it ain't broke, don't fix it! I am having problems with shifting, the hardest gear is revers, would the problem be in the shifter or something in the transmission? This happen all of a sudden on a trip, slowing down when to down shift and could shift gears, had to work hard at shifting, got to my destination and revers is sure hard to engage. Can you give me some pointer and where to look for this problem?
@TorqueKingTV
@TorqueKingTV 2 года назад
Hi- on this trip were you towing a heavy trailer? Could have cooked the oil so it interferes with the synchronizers.. These transmissions have an average lifespan of about 150k miles, if it is close to that you could have some bearing wear causing misalignment. I'd change the oil to start with and see what happens, also examine the old oil for contamination. Beyond that feel free to give us a call and we can troubleshoot over the phone. 406-384-0270

I know this is an older video but how different will it be doing a 2 wheel drive version? I plan to rebuild one in one of my work trucks. I had problems with it jumping out of third gear so while driving it back to the shop skipping third going to fourth it exploded the clutches. Was hauling about 10k pounds included what was on the flatbed. I plan to just go back with a cheap build to use around the farm. I have the Allstate Gear master rebuild kit with upgraded fifth gear nut and shaft. I ordered phoenix friction stage 2 heavy duty clutch and flywheel kit. Gonna stick with the stock 12-1/4”clutch. Does that all sound ok?
@TorqueKingTV
