The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 has a release date of April 13, 2023 and an MSRP of $600. We're reviewing the video card today, testing the RTX 4070 GPU with the NVIDIA Founders Edition model. One of the key comparisons currently -- maybe surprisingly -- is actually AMD's RX 6950 XT, which has plummeted in price over the last year or two. We're also benchmarking the RTX 4070 vs. the RTX 3070, RTX 2070, and GTX 1070, giving 4 generations of the 70-class. Of course, other test data includes the RTX 4090, 4080, and 4070 Ti vs. the RTX 4070, with comparisons to plenty of 30-series and 6000-series cards. Although the 7900 XT and XTX are in the charts, they are (like the 4080 and 4090) in a different price class.

When looking up secondhand market prices, I recommend using the "sold listings" filter, and averaging out price that are within a qualifiable margin of error (too high of a price means someone was either desperate, or it's not exactly what you're trying to compare. Too low of a price means that something was wrong with the card or it's just being sold for spare parts). Succinctly put, off the top of your head, try to identify the lowest and highest acceptable price and average out 10+ sold listings within the middle of an estimated bell curve.

I did that recently. I got myself a used Sapphire Pulse 6800 XT for about 490 USD equivalent in local currency (660 CAD), and that included the cost of shipping. Sapphire Pulse branded cards tend to offer an optimal balance between cost, quality, and features, imo, and I find that the quality of the model matters more when taking the risk of buying a used product. EVGA is another great example of a brand which makes some really good quality models, and they still officially offer warranty coverage for USED products, which is super cool (3 year warranty). That kind of warranty really shows that they have a lot of confidence in their products, and it's obviously also a very consumer friendly policy. Pretty sad that EVGA got sick of dealing with Nvidia, but understandable.

Definitely a better card, and if people can get one for the same price I'd very strongly recommend the 6950/ 6900xt over this, but I think AMD is trying to dump their stock and those prices won't last forever. This is the first card of this generation that I've kind of been OK with price/ performance from Nvidia. It's far from amazing, but if they had sold this for the 700-750 they had planned to sell it for, it would have been more in-line with the gouging they've been doing. I think a lot of this is about if they don't go back to the drawing board on the 4060ti/ 4060, those cards are going to get savaged in reviews for the 8gb problem. They won't be a money maker either because people won't buy them, or they'll have to cut the price really substantially to move them.

104 is not normally 60s, don’t spread misinformation. The 60 series has being using the 106 die since the GTX 660 back in 2012, and the 60 series normally gets the third tier die. If you are simply looking at performance then this card would be an excellent 4060 because the 60 is typically a bit behind the previous gen 80. The reason why the 104 die is performing so poorly is because it’s the third tier die this generation, just renamed to give the illusion of being greater than it is. Also, 200 watts is not low power. That’s the kind of power draw that would be seen by the high-end from before Ampere.

Well they calculate the price based on availability and pre sales demand. It isn't just price of production + 30% or whatever business studies teaches (that is wrong). The 6950XT was cheap on release for what it was, at the time but now it's older and the supply/demand curve has changed... So it's reflecting that with the discount. If you want to criticise AMD, the thing to target is their DRIVER SUPPORT! That's the bugbear of us AMD users they always release new drivers that break and require a rollback 20 mins later :D

Even though I like Nvidia and have used only their cards for almost the last 20 years (I did live my ATI Radeon 9700Pro TV) I am back to team Red because of Nvidia's ridiculous pricing. My 6650 XT was cheap and runs 4k great in most games without a hitch. The only thing I am missing out on is Ray Tracing in the games that support it... which for me is only Cyberpunk 2077 so far. When I can get a CPU, Motherboard, memory and GPU for less than their upper mid level card... that is crazy. I loved my GeForce GTX 1060 with 6GB. I picked it up for $300 and the power draw is not crazy high. I'm still running my Antec EarthWatts 650w PS I picked up 15 years ago and don't feel the need to replace that or use anything but stock cooling and a pair of 120mm case fans for cooling. My daughter and her husband now use my old system parts... Ryzen 3 1400, ASRock B350, 16GB memory, GeForce GTX 1060, WD 1GB hard drive, Antec 550w PS, Antec Case, and a 23" 1080p monitor. I have a Ryzen 5 5600, ASRock B550, 16GB memory, AMD Radeon 6650XT, 1TB NVME gen 3+, 4TB backup drive, ASUS 28" 4k monitor, Creative Labs 5.1 surround speakers, Razor Mamba KB+M, LG Blu-ray burner, Antec case, 1080P web cam, Canon TR4720 printer... It is a good system. I can not justify putting more than $100 or so into most parts and $200-300 into a few parts. The increased quality or performance is just not worth the massive increase in cost. I got a good 5 years out of my Ryzen 1400. Heck in the last 10-15 years the only thing I have ever had die was a cheap $50 SSD I got on Black Friday 4-5 years ago. It only lasted a year. I just pass the parts down until they outlive the second computer... sometimes the third. They usually are in a system for 10 years minimum.

Thank you Gamers Nexus for pointing out the value of actual vram, and similarly priced competitors. I just love the inclusion of the 6800 and 6900 series. The price drops actually make them fierce competitors. Is this card really better than the RTX 3080 12gb? Yes, definitely, but in 2023, it's a hard pass for me. In order for me to consider this card, the MSRP has to be below 500 usd, heck closer to 400usd. The main problem is the lack of vram. We have a mid range level of vram for this card and the price should be treated as such. 1080p games are pushing past 8gb vram in all the newest titles such as RE4, TLOU part 1, Hogwart's Legacy, Dead Space remake, the list goes on and on. at 1440p, the vram usage is around 10 to 11gb vram, but as soon as you turn on RT, it goes over 12 gb. The rx6900xt and rx6950xt from 2 yrs ago is to going to scorch this card in RT at 1440p for upcoming titles. There is no RT advantage moving forward, nobody is going to buy a 600usd card to play at 1080p. (Credit to Daniel Owens for doing vram testing in RE4 remake.) Watch the HWUB video comparing the RTX3070 to the RX6800. In 2 yrs time, we're going to see another video comparing this 4070 with the RX6900XT, and the unreleased RX7800xt and we're going to go through all the testing and find the VRAM lacking on the 4070 being the bottleneck for greatness. In my mind, this is a 4060ti pretending to be a 4070 priced like a 3080. For the love of god, don't fall for this BS marketing and skip this card. Frame Generation isn't real frames, it does nothing for input latency, the whole point of having higher fps is responsiveness with smoothing. You only get visual smoothing with DLSS3.
