NYC Mafia Spots

When I made a recent trip to New York we went to some locations associated with the origins of the Mafia including the Morello gang spaghetti shop, barrel murder location, daring secret service raid and more recent Mafia spots like Sparks Steak House and The Ravenite social club.
This is not an exhaustive list, I don't live in the city and could only get to a few spots on my trip. More will be planned in the future.

Thank you, this is really interesting. I love exploring the city, looking for famous locations. Been to a couple of the places on your video but honestly, you're braver than I am when it comes to more dicey parts of town. Would love to see the plaques for The Polo Grounds and Ebbets Field but that won't happen. Several years ago I walked into the Park Sheraton Hotel, now the Park Central, 56th and 7th Ave. Where both Arnold Rothstein and Albert Anastasia met their end. Apparently barbershops in hotels have gone out of style. I found The Five Points made famous in the Scorsese film Gangs of New York. Although it's long gone from those days it's a pretty cool part of town, right by another famous Mafia site, the federal courthouse. We have been going to the city about once a year lately but considering what's going on now, sadly I don't see us going back. Thanks again!

Wow. impressive. i have the book "The First FAMILY" By Mike Dash. All your recounts are right on point. I wish you could have given more detail on the barrel murder. But you did very good anyway. I read and re-read this book...so much of he Mafia history is just not talked about. Like How , where and when the American Mafia began. it began all started with counterfeiting which lead to all other activity and crime.. So amazing. But it is all very very important. This book pinpoints early names that we hear about later. So intriguing.

Interesting. You did some research. There's lots of spots in Chicago you might want to check out. However, many of the historic Mob sites either no longer exist or are radically changed. The North Side, where my grandparents lived in tenements when they were new immigrants, is now wealthy and upscale. In the 20's it was Kilgallen, one of the worst and most dangerous slums in America. My grandfather knew Dion O'Banion, of flowershop assasination infamy, in passing. My dad's first memory was being patted on the head in the street by "Killer" Burke and one of his men when he and my grandfather encountered them on the street.. They were the St. Valentine's Day Massacre shooters. Shortly afterwards my grandparents and most of their other relatives fled Chicago for good and settled in LA.
@HistoryIlluminated

I am going to hit up Chicago sometime next year. I like to get a full year of research and notes ready before I go somewhere so I don't miss anything. I am going to a few sites that are not well known. If you haven't subscribed, do so and you will get notified when its up.

Great video.. but something of another mob-botched hit took place at that very street the projects stand on at e 107 st between 2nd and 3rd Aves. Before the projects were built, small tenement buildings stood, and in 1931 Vincent Coll attempted to kidnap another mobster Joey Rao and a shootout took place. Coll accidently shot a little boy playing out front named Michael Vengalli and killed him.

In terms of the Castellano-Bilotti hit, there were 4 shooters coming down from the east side of the street, wearing Russian hats and trenchcoats. One shooter was positioned on the street opposite the Steakhouse. Sammy the Bull as driver, with John Gotti, orchestrated the hit and passed by , subsequently, making sure both Paulie and Tommy were dead...they then sped off. By the way, Sparks Steakhouse has impeccable food. Remember , as you're eating your bloody steak ,of the blood that was shed outside on the street back 36+ years ago..

Don't believe they ever located his body. The building for the sleazy dive bar that Burke owned, in a rather unremarkable neighborhood, is still there, but the last I heard it was a Jamaican restaurant. According to Hill the murder occurred in the basement, which was half finished as a hangout and half dirt. Spider was supposedly dumped up in the dirt. Later, when the FBI was investigating Burke after Hill was tirned, they searched the place. They blew it because Burke knew they were coming. He had just concreted the unfinshed half. They dug there and in the small back yard where there was a bocce court and barbeque. He'd supposedly buried other bodies there. Shades of John Wayne Gacy!! He'd moved all the bodies he'd buried there. Nobody knows where he moved them to. Not a tribute to the intelligence of the FBI.

Old Guisepoe was a bad bad man. He layed out the Mafia in New York getting big. Well respected that he was always involved in the higher echolons of Coss Nostra in America but more New York. If he wasnt joe Masserias consiglierre "Joe the boss" would have hot noehere as far as fast without Morrello..Who before a prison sentance was recognised boss of bosses. And was also boss of Morrello/Terranova family the first New York family that lasted and can be traced to todays operational Mafia families in New York. Some fella old Joe Morrello he wven had a withwred handn/arm from birth, aka the clutch/ing hand. Don Petru, Guiseppe Morrello, Peter Morrello, Joe Terranova etc. Was no councidence Joe the boss went from looking like the winner. There opposition feared Don Peter Morrello, and 1st on their l7st he was and went. No couincidence Joe the boss started loosing the war he was until this point winning. With the Experience, Savagary, hardness, intelligence and even super natural due to Southern Italies peasants taking a defornaty as a curse from God. They took him out and won the war. The old Fox , survivor of countless gang wars was now dead.

Show the Ravenite, the Gemini Lounge, the lot where Sonny Black was found, Robert's lounge and everything to do with the 1970- till the fall of the Mafia. How about Sparks Steakhouse?
