N.Y.C. Sheriffs Office (Formerly Department) have always been around. They are considered " New York City's First ". They are the law enforcement arm of the courts when it comes to child support arrests. Civil Enforcement is their primary function. New York State penal code classifies them as Peace Officers, while N.Y.P.D. are classified as Police Officers. They can make arrests and/or respond if a crime is in progress, which is rare & normally handled by N.Y.P.D. Illustrious history dating back prior to the consolidation of New York City and creation of N.Y.P.D.

During COVID they were doing some shady shit. IIRC it was because the city charter had some loopholes to do the public health enforcement that the NYPD explicitly couldn't do. As someone who was a first responder in NYC for most of my adult life whenever I encountered the NYC Sheriff's office I always found them professional and pleasant to work with

Only problem with the Taurus as a cop car is that the biggest, most powerful engine was the least durable. If they'd had the 3.0 Vulcan V6 or even the 2.3 four those were much more durable but the Ford 3.8 sold a lot of Caprices and Impalas to PDs and Toyota Camrys to everyone else.

The elusive Taurus police package grill. Quite sought after by SHO owners at one time.

@@royale7620 That design was an evolution of the M body (9C-1) Caprice but you can clearly see the spirit of the previous design in the updated design. Frame is still the same; just an aerodynamic car The rounded Crown Victoria and the Previous Ford LTD are the same exact example.

When the sheriff's dept was first established they took their recruits from an NYPD list.they didn't have their own test. The wore jeans and raid jackets and their shelves were identified to detective shields. I don't know who's bright idea it was to give them uniforms and the ridiculous hat.they were so much more intimidating in plain clothes

Red and White Sheriff's cars were a New York State tradition for many years. Personally I miss this look as it was Iconic and the Knockoff NYPD look they have now is boring. As for the streethawk, I have no clue your guess is as good as mine

Police cars being red actually makes a lot of sense when you think about it. White with a little red is eh, but Philadelphia had red cars, sometimes red with white tops, until the early 1970s. Red cars are a lot easier to spot, so if a citizen wanted to flag down or run to a cop car for help it’s a lot easier to pick out fire engine red in a crowd of cars, especially with how skinny light bars are today. The baby blue NYPD cars act similarly. You can look up pics of Ridley Township, PA police to see modern red police cars to put into perspective how visible the color is (and how much cooler it looks, imo).

@@zew1368Pennsylvania State Police had yellow cars at one time. Went to white for decades. Then recently tried gray. And they're back into using white again. The gray blends in so much with common roads.

Yes, actually each borough is actually a county (Manhattan's other name is New York County) per The Constitution each county must have a sheriff, most are LEOs but some are not and run the jails..
@MattMorris481
@MattMorris481 2 месяца назад
See I’m not used to all these departments, in Florida you got the county sheriff’s department and police departments in the cities. In my county they did away with the city police and the sheriff’s department took over everything and we have the highway patrol. But I see in New York they the transit police and kinds of others I guess the transit police are part of the NYPD.🤷🏼‍♂️

@@Phil_Melone A "scofflaw" is someone is completely just disregards a law. In this instance, parking laws, which is chronic in NYC. So people who are chronic offenders of parking laws and have a large amount of unpaid parking tickets have their cars towed. This is still done today, however it is much more common to be reported by a black van with ALPR on the roof versus a NYC Sheriffs Deputy coming across it. That being said, NYC Sheriffs Department is more intune with a different practice than NYPD, which is more finiancial.

In many parts of NY sheriff units are considered officers of the court, they handle civil issues like code enforcement and corrections (although not in NYC where the DOC does that). They do not take 911 calls, but would be there if someone needed to be served a court order
