Best thing about that kind of being a punchline is that kids can use it irl and help them overcome the awkwardness of calling a mate out. The humor becomes a tool
Great advertisement, the NZ government understands they can't stop binge drinking, but look to work around it ensuring that people are still safe.. Good job
Yeah, the next series of ads are: When you're high on meth for 3 days and nights straight, try not to chop your own arms off with a machete, bro. Stay relatively safe, chur."
This is how society should treat drugs in general. You're never going to stop people from producing drugs. Even if there was a big brother government there'd still be guys mixing up drugs in bathrooms or wherever. Decriminalize them for over a certain age, idk, 25, and take the money and power away from the gangs and cartels which allow them to commit violence and murder on a war like scale. Drugs exist in the world. They're here and always will be. It's like a fundamental part of the universe that these chemicals exist. Just treat the symptoms around it and educate people to be wiser and provide better mental health. Or just let these sick people continue to shoot up stuff they honestly don't know what it is and was mixed in some bath tub and then cut with other worse shit to stretch it out further problem 3-4 times before reaching their hand
Felix Catora bro, to us new zealanders, its quite stereo-typical for you guyz to say that we say 'chups' instead of 'chips'. It only sounds like 'chup' to you fellahs
Reuben Saipaia I'm sorry if I offended you in any way. In Canada, we say, "about", like "a-boot" depending where you live. But going back to Chips, I have a friend, who's from New Zealand, and he had shown us this commercial, and all of a sudden "Ghost Chips" had become our inside joke in class.
@@mikethespike056 crash is a term commonly used by kiwis, its basically means to sleep/stay somewhere for the night. For eg: crash at a friends place :)
More than a decade later, still a brilliant advertisement that sends the message across beautifully with its charm and NZ humour while never being condescending or over-dramatic.
This is honestly great. Feels like an actual situation that could go down. Not those overly dramatic "oh my god he drank a beer and accidentally killed 50 orphan children on their way to church" or some shit like that.
Yeah, that moment where it goes silent is more serious and realistic than any D.A.R.E ad or "scared straight" type of ad for this. It's also a pretty applicable message, since it's not saying "Don't go to parties or drink", since most teens won't listen to anything near that. It's just "Hey, while you're partying, make sure your mate doesn't drive home if he's drunk."
The Carrollton bus collision occurred on May 14, 1988, on Interstate 71 in unincorporated Carroll County, Kentucky. The collision involved a former school bus in use by a church youth group and a pickup truck driven by an alcohol-impaired driver. The head-on collision was the deadliest incident involving drunk driving and the third-deadliest bus crash in U.S. history. Of the 67 people on the bus (counting the driver), there were 27 fatalities in the crash, the same number as the 1958 Prestonsburg bus disaster, and behind the 1976 Yuba City bus disaster (29) and 1963 Chualar bus crash (32).
cuzzie from the states couldn't understand this and I had plenty of time. 0:06 Oh no! George is driving! He's too wasted. I should say something, but I could look dumb in front of Monique. 0:12 Bruh, Monique says you're dumb But if he crashes, I am going to live with his family. 0:18 Puzzle time (snap*) And if he dies...George's ghost will hunt me...forever "grab a chup (fries)...want a chup?" "you know I can't grab your ghost chups...go away!" 0:28 "spoon!" "space head" "BOO!!!" "hey, what are you doing bruh?" 0:36 I have been internalizing a really complicated situation in my head "what are you on about?" I dont think you should drive Nah! Nah, you're too drunk bruh!...Just crash here (guy from the back) yes, crash here OK (laugh)
hey, Kiwis, I love your PSA, it's mean as :) I'm writing my bachelor's paper on New Zealand PSA, and I just wanted to let you know that it's appreciated even in Ukraine (at least by me)
Far Cry 3's setting is meant to be an island between Queensland Australia and New Zealand you can tell by the animals and the fact the population are Maori
That was awesome! I am impressed his mate accepted his comment without any hassle. This is something that friends and family must do in order to prevent someone from driving drunk. I guess one could say that friends and family are the first line of defense against drunk driving.
I'm Korg, this is my good friend Meik, he is an insect and has knives for hands. I am made of rock but don't let that intimidate you, you shouldn't be scared... Unless you are made of scissors..."
I love how somehow this is still relevant even now! And Thor Ragnarok brought it back by Korg saying “Go away ghost!” Thanks Taika Waititi! 🤙🏻 bringing back memories! Definitely the best drink driving ad us kiwis have ever seen!
He gives in so easy. When in reality it would be "just crash here" "yeah nah fuck that I'm all good to drive bro only had a couple" "no you haven't you've had heaps g" "nah fuck honest bro only had a couple" "aw Chur too much" later on that night massive skids in the bros car going down the road gets rolled by the po po and ends up in the cells for the night.
This is way better than those shock value ones, no need for gore or people suffering how you killed a family of 6, but instead a situation when you can avoid it altogether, addressing the "I won't say anything because of social pressure" issue, leeegend
So ahead of it’s time and obviously a classic cos I haven’t seen it for probably over ten years and it still seems fresh and current. And still funny af even though when it was on the telly we all saw it a million times.
+SANPH I see your point, but at the same time I would still try. it's innocent people's lives that are at risk as well, and I will do everything in my power to save an innocent life.
So if you witnessed a rape you wouldn't stop it, because it's the responsibility if the rapist to stop? This line of reasoning is incredibly immature and self-absorbed. If you see someone at a party about to drive drunk they could: a.) kill themselves (if you're at a party with them they should be your friend, you should not want them to die/go to prison) b.) kill someone else (Which is worse. It could be anyone - your mom, wife, child, etc.) that did nothing wrong. Aside from that, think about it like this - what if some asshole hit you and paralyzed you for life, and you find out they had been Driving Drunk, and their friends could have tried to stop it and maybe you'd still be walking. Karma is a real bitch, just remember that.
SANPH you completely missed the point. it was about the implications of letting someone who is really drunk drive and the fact that if they die it could come back to literally haunt you. It was not about whether or not you're responsible for them. Though we could extrapolate that we have a responsibility to help people who we're close to, even if it's just for selfish reasons like fear of guilt
It is both more easy and convincing to actually be drunk. Like how photoshopping something is much easier if you do most of it in real life, before you take the photo. 👌
Yea I remember one time my friend decided he was going to drive home when he was wasted. Got in a fight in the front yard until we got his keys. Still friends 15 years later
I am curious about him living with his friend's family. Is this a part of the culture that if he feels responsible then he has to leave his own family for theirs? Btw, I love the way the mom says 'puzzle time'!
Just a courtesy thing. Keeps George’s family out of grief. Just because we’re not in your country, doesn’t mean we do things that you don’t do because of our culture.
@@plaguefulx3416 I mean...that is different from what I would expect in my culture. To be honest, I couldn't think of a reason for this also. But now that I see your explanation, it sounds nice. Really considerate.
I remember loving this ad when it came out. Such a shame it didn’t work. Drink driving is still a massive problem over here. It’ll be damn hard to change though given the countries general obsession with binge drinking.
I was watching the Graham Norton Show the other day and noticed that American guests have issues understanding the other guests, whereas (Chris Hemsworth) for example had no problems understanding people on the other side of the world. I've seen this quite a bit in various talk shows, it's usually the Americans that don't understand other accents. I wonder why this is.
probably because there is more media with california accents being exported via hollywood than non-american accents being imported here. heck, even southern accents are quite rare to hear.
Probably because Americans mostly watch American TV and movies. A small minority might watch Doctor Who or Downton Abbey. Whereas Kiwis and Aussies watch a lot of British and American shows so they're exposed to different accents from a young age
I think standard american and canadian accents are a bit sharper and the sound of the vowels are more distinct so it's a bit easier to make out the words.
btw sarcasm. -_- obviously maori :P why do people keep shaming themselves by being on D&D commercials.. nobody wants to be on a DD commercial!! it's like they failed at life then decided to go on a drunk driving commercial cos they might (*MIGHT) be popular for once in their life, but it failed as always and nobody will remember them, except as the "guy" from the drunk driving commercial...
I would trade my left testicle for the day I tell a potential drunk driver they should drive, and they respond with "okay" Lmfao, that being said, one of the best commercials ever
Worth it. Best for u 2 to end friendship or not talking with each other for long time than living with regret because your friend died crashing because you let your friend driving drunk. You can still be friend again after times passed. A century if you need to. But you cant bring a friend back to life no matter how long you live.
Not to mention NZ TV shows are better than Australian ones. Kiwi shows keep things light, even their highway patrol and cop shows are more fun to watch. Aussie shows take themselves way too seriously, trying to push up the drama.
Honestly I remember this more for the ghost chips, but it’s nice to have a road ad that doesn’t scare the shit out of me. This after deliberately searching up TAC ads
