Oak Meadow Update | 4th and 6th Grade
I have had quite a few people ask how has using Oak Meadow been for us this school year. Overall, we were very happy with our decision to use the Oak Meadow curriculum for my boys' fourth and sixth-grade years. It has exceeded our expectations and made our homeschooling journey enjoyable and successful. Watch the video for more details on what worked for us and what we tweaked to make it work.

I've used OM for 3 years, and I can't wait for 4th grade! I think I'll look into daily grams for additional writing... very cool. We supplement mrs. Wordsmith for spelling & vocabulary, and bc my girl likes math I think I'll look into something that accelerates a bit faster. I love LOVE OM! Thank you so much for sharing this review!

This sounds really promising for our journey starting with OM. Can you share what field trips you're planning and how they match up with the curriculum?

😊 I haven't opened up next year's levels yet, 5th and 7th to plan field trips, but here's what we've done so far this year. For 4th grade, they are learning about local history and geography. So we went on a tour of our state capital building, state Legislature building, history and science museums, and state parks. At state parks, we went into the visitors center and talked with workers about the local wildlife, and looked at the exhibits they set up. There was also a lot of focus on art, so we went to art museums and the Van Gogh exhibit. For my 6th grader studying ancient history, we went to museums and even a lecture. He studied plants and animals this year, too, so we hit local gardens, zoos, and an animal sanctuary. We went on some other OM-related and non-OM-related field trips, but these are the ones I remember off the top of my head. I felt it really encouraged exploration! Oh, and almost everything we did was free!

Thanks so much for the update! We are going to use OM next year for the first time (OM4). I've always been very eclectic, using many different curricula and I'm worried that I am putting too much on our plates. I appreciate you sharing the supplements you have used. How have you liked OM math? You said you were supplementing with Teaching textbooks. Was that because you felt your son needed it, or just to mix things up? We have used many different math programs and haven't found one we really like. Thanks!

We continued with teaching textbooks with the 4th grader because he really liked it. OM 4 was more of a review for him, so he feels confident working through it. Those lessons we start together, and then he finishes on his own. The fourth-grade math isn't written to the student like it will be next year; for 5th grade, he will have a separate course book and a workbook to work through. I think the sixth-grade math for my sixth grader was just the right fit this year. He has been growing in his confidence around math.

I honestly didn't feel OM 4 alone was enough for my 4th-grade son.
