Except a compromise is reached, the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, and Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, are heading for a showdown over the impending return by Germany and the United Kingdom of artefacts stolen from the Benin Palace in 1897 during a raid by the colonial invaders.
While the monarch favours the return of the artefacts to a museum to be built by the palace within its premises, or in the alternative, a museum to be built and managed by the federal and state governments, the palace believes the governor prefers a private trust to take custody of, and manage the ancient precious artworks.
However, Obaseki told THISDAY that he was working on a tripartite arrangement, involving the federal and state governments, the Oba of Benin and a private trust that would manage the artefacts on behalf of the palace and the people.
“I intend to work with the Oba of Benin in an arrangement that would be led by the federal government,” he told THISDAY, accusing a palace chief, Elemai Oseni, of misinforming the revered monarch about his plans.
He said he would straighten out things with the monarch on his return from Germany, where he and the Minister of Information and Culture, Mr. Lai Mohammed, are currently negotiating and insisting on unconditional repatriation of the artefacts.
Notwithstanding, the brewing quarrel in Benin may become public knowledge today as Oba Ewuare II addresses a historic press conference, the first ever, signposting the importance he attaches to the issue. - Check out ARISE.TV to read the full article.

Those artifacts should go back to the ORIGINAL OWNERS. SIMPLE.

Africa....why must we always fight? Artifacts now returned and we can't even decide how and where to host them or what to do with them? Those who returned them will now have a good laugh. While the "fight" goes on and before we know it, the artifacts will disappear again! Nigeria - such a leadership tragedy - NO VISION...NO PLAN!!!

Did any one see the body language and power play between the reporter and the palace secretary? The reporter is in support of the governor. He minimised the stature if the secretary by his parting hand touch on the secretary's should twice then emphasised that the artifact belongs to the people of the kingdom with the Oba being a custodian [not an owner]. He also called the present Benin museum a relic. Did you see the look of pain and controlled anger the secretary gave the reporter after the first and second touch on his shoulders? And the pain in his face twice when the report repeated that the Obaseki patriarch was the Iyase of Benin and a right-hand man of the dethroned Ovonramen? And, the secretary muted attempts to explain something to the reporter towards the end? Bias? The report was not neutral. The studio anchor tried to explore the part of peace and possible talk but Ogodo showed his bias and twice duldge the questions. Ogodo is fully aware of the dichotomy in the history of the Benin power rivalry but took side.

This is utterly nonsensical. These artifacts should be left in the west or where ever they are for the world to learn, indulge and see our history and who we are. Is there a museum anywhere in Benin or Nigeria that we can be proud of? Who is going to travel from anywhere in the world to visit a museum in Benin or Nigeria? This is nothing short of pride and arrogance. We have never been go at preserving and telling our own stories.

What you should know is .. those subjects are not mere artefacts. They have a historical and culturally symbolism to the bini clan, while still serving religious purposes. It's only fair that they're returned to where they belong.

My opinion is that the Western nations should continue to keep the artifacts because of the reasons listed below: .....The Edo state is not safe right now. The so-called authorities are not talking about how to defend the innocent citizens of Edo State from the Buhari boys, the Fulani terrorist gangs but they are fighting about where to keep the returning artifacts. ....how can the authorities guarantee that the artifacts would be maintained well, and kept safe and secure for hundreds of generations to come?

The Governor is only showing interest in these artefacts because of the money involved as a Benin man I can tell you categorically that the Oba of Benin is the one and only Custodian of Benin culture and tradition. Obaseki should back off with immediate effect before the ancestors descend on his home and entire family. Now I know this Governor is truly an alien and not a true Benin man I regretted the day I supported and voted 🗳 for him.

The Governor is doing the right thing. These Artifacts can’t be managed by Governments or The Benin Traditional Council. After all these Artifacts were made and created by Benin Men and Women, they were not stolen from the Palace, but stolen from the Kingdom. The whole kingdom were invaded and valuables stolen. The Governor is doing the right thing. I don’t know why the Benin Traditional Council wants to be in charge of what they can’t manage and preserve.
@anthonyajibolaomoruyi8054
@anthonyajibolaomoruyi8054 3 года назад
@BROWN BERRY: I think the Benin traditional council is not really thinking far enough; keeping maintenance of a World standard museum is not a "moimoi" business. Moreover, if the Benin traditional council is really serious about having a museum in front of the palace, they should start with the building of the museum. Finally the durability of the artifacts and the overall interest of the Edo people should be in the forefront in this discussion.

You think Benin tradition is like your traditions that have lost it’s worth? No, it is as strong as ever. You guys are juveniles and I should not be arguing with you. The artifacts belongs to the palace and the palace decides what would happen to them. If the palace decided not to build a museum, there is nothing anyone can do about it. Obaseki can not dispute with the Oba of Benin, he is fully aware of that. We the Benins can chase him out of the state even as a sitting Governor. So, you can take your worthless opinions to your traditional leaders you guys have no respect for.
