I mean... Props to Luke Skywalker for turning THAT GUY back to the light side. Right?

I quite like hiw throughout the Disney canon Vader has consistently been represented as someone to fear. Star Wars Rebels, Jedi: Fallen Order, Rogue One and now Kenobi have all portrayed Vader as almost like a horror movie monster, with a hint of tragedy behind him (Rebels and Kenobi obviously leaning a bit more openly into the tragic aspect). It's great to see him be handled so well consistently.

They're teasing us about the Grand Inquisitor. They cut off the line when she was about to say death or injury lol.

Vader is toying with his prey. He doesn't want to simply kill Obi Wan, he wants to destroy him. The man he just encountered was a frail and weak imitation of what he thinks Obi Wan Kenobi is. Obi may run, but Vader knows he will catch him no matter how hard he tries. The catch is Vader has no clue what Obi Wan is protecting.

Many are upset and calling Obi Wan a coward and weak and I'm baffled by that description bc the man is weak right now. He hasn't used the force in 10 years or used his sabre. He barely was able to use the force to save Leia. So I agree with him not wanting to fight Vader. He's in no shape to. Also yes Vader could have put out that fire or jumped over it but I do believe he is in this to torment Kenobi and wants the chase. He knows he will find him again. Vader is no dummy. All mind games.

I don’t think Vader is conflicted. I mean if I was him and looking for one guy for a decade only to find out he’s getting help,I’d like to know who from. So let them regroup and catch them all.

At this point there is no conflict in Vader. The comics and other media have shown he has dreamed about this for years, his hate for Obi-Wan is higher than anything else, and he wants to make him suffer.

I had chills. Straight chills the moment I heard Vader. Yeah, this is peak Vader vs. broken Obi-Wan.

Kenobi sharing his early memories was my favourite scene in this. Ewan can do so much with basic exposition he turns it into a bonding and comforting moment with Leia.

It's open to interpretation of course, but in my view I saw Vader letting Kenobi go as him being unsatisfied with the fight that Kenobi put up. He wants a harder challenge, a longer battle, and he wants Obi-Wan to suffer more.

I love that we got a Quinlan mention! He was rumored to have survived the Purge in the Secrets of the Jedi book and he was on a list of presumed survivors in a Vader comic Apparently a Topps trading card confirmed that he survived AND that he has a new lover called Khaleen Hentz

One thing I like about Star Wars is how droids can play such a significant role. They are treated in some ways like second class, but the loader droid showed some real understanding when the troopers were inspecting their residence and I think will play another major role similar to Rogue One.

I definitely think he's partially conflicted, but mostly I think it's out of hatred and a sense of wanting to make Obi-wan suffer. He doesn't want it to be over quickly.

I personally think seeing Obi-Wan get saved from burning made Vader think back to when he burned on Mustafar. Maybe he wished that Obi-Wan or somebody had saved him from that experience.

Thoughtful reaction. I liked that you recognized that this series is about Obi-Wan's journey, his emotional growth as you said, and not about some of these side things that might not be as strongly developed. I wonder if some of the folks that have major issues with the show either don't truly understand that that is the story or just don't like that type of story. This is about showing us where Obi-Wan is at mentally/emotionally ten years down the road from when everything he ever knew and fought for just imploded in spectacular fashion. He's immediately forced into hiding with a heavy duty on his shoulders (watching Luke). He's isolated, devastated, disconnected from the Force (his light in the dark), and has all this time to just endlessly ruminate on his mistakes without anyone there to dissuade him from or help him work through some of thinking and feelings of guilt, shame, fear, etc. He can't even let it go into the force because he's basically disconnected from it for fear of him and Luke being discovered. I'm guessing this episode, Part III, was the turning point (at least it seemed that way to me) for Obi-Wan to struggle climbing back up through the dark place where he has been mentally/emotionally to regain some balance and some hope. They have clearly shown he is suffering PTSD. If I recall correctly Ewan even mentioned that aspect in several interviews. I think some of viewers don't grasp that or do grasp it but are not interested in that type of story. Personally, I think it's good storytelling. After everything he went through in ROTS and then the aftermath he would not realistically be the exact same person I think some viewers are looking for him to be right now. The main point of the story is his journey from this state he's in now to finding a way to process it and find a way/reason to move forward. Anyway, sorry that was so long. Thanks for reacting to the Ob-Wan series.

8:10 This is a callback to an early draft of RETURN OF THE JEDI, where Obi-Wan tells Luke on Dagobah that his "Uncle Owen" was actually Kenobi's brother. The idea was dropped, but it made it's way into the original ROTJ novelization.

Idk if this is a coincidence but him saying “Initiate Protocol 23.” is from Warhammer 40k. In the game, DoW (Dawn of War) when you select any infantry of the Space Marines they said those exact same words. I was very surprised to hear that.

I think the big issue with a lot of people complaining is the og star wars fans have this set idea of what star wars should be and they refuse to look past episode 4,5,6. they forget that star wars has no 1 set path and has many many many paths that could easily be considered star wars. so many galaxies and universes that we dont know about anything can happen. Vader just playing with his food, that scene with the fire of him walking away doestn mean he let them go, remember the planet is locked down and they still on it they got away for now but didnt escape vaders grasp. So he probably regrouping and going on the hunt again

Honestly, I'm so glad Disney went as dark as they did for this episode. They really needed to reinforce the fact that Vader is genuinely terrifying. He's a monster, and he's willing to do anything to get his way. The fact that even someone as unhinged as Reva shows fear around him speaks volumes. I also think they're going in some great directions with this show. I personally love their idea to have Leia as a major supporting character and fleshing her out more. As for Vader's feelings... I think he feels pretty unadulterated pain and rage towards Obi-Wan. This is basically Vader's peak, and while he probably has conflict now and then, I think he blames Obi-Wan almost solely for everything that happened to him, and he is bent on long, agonizing revenge.

If this answers the "when I left you I was but the learner, now I am the master" I am going to be so disappointed....

I think at that time Vader only had this conflict with Obi Wan and because he was close in the past but with unknown people he does things like he would against the villagers

That’s interesting Vader took out the fire like nothing but it reignited he just watched them get away. Vader wanted him to suffer but Anakin was the one watching. Obi Wan will probably notice this and try to convert him back to the light, which would then fulfill the line in RoTJ “Come with me” “Obi Wan once thought as you do”

Everyone is over the moon to see the truly brutal side of Vader, but it honestly makes it harder to accept is redemption later. He's just dragging people through the streets, snapping the necks of kids trying to save their parents, and all just because he can, and because he's taunting his old friend and partner.

Vader isn't conflicted, he wants Obi-wan to suffer. Killing him would be too easy. Hell he wanted his troopers to capture him alive to torture him little by little. At this point in time Anakin memories are tied to Padme no the jedi.

I dunno, stormtroppers, if NED-B had used that hammer it would have communicated very clearly. Zach Braff was that Freck-ing collaborator.

This is Vader at his peak both in terms of power and in terms of Evil, malevolence and cruelty.

and yes hayden is in the suitn and he says that he wants to be in a vader series if disney plus wants to do 1 and he said after last playing vader he had to rewatch all of the star wars sage from episode 1 through 9 and the clone wars series

I have to admit I didn't think we get Obi-Wan vs Vader so soon in the series, and I'm pretty sure they'll duel again, I really enjoyed this episode though!!!!

Cool reaction! Kenobi is disconnected from the force, it's been a decade since he's used it and equally as long since he held his saber... I personally think the saber choreography was perfect for the timeline, more reminiscent to the traditional kendo style used in ANH. I feel Vader isn't conflicted, he toyed with Kenobi after sensing his weakness, Vader definitely had the strength and power over his old master as he beat Kenobi effortlessly using only one hand. It's obvious Vader let him go, he could've used the force to drag Kenobi through the flames toward him or he could've force crushed the loader droid then walked through the flames to get Kenobi because his suit armor and cape are made of fire proof material. Vader most likely demands more of a challenge from his old master so he's allowing Kenobi the chance to heal so he may put up more of a fight in their next meeting of which Kenobi most likely out classes him hence Vader's line in ANH "When I left you I was but the learner, now I am the master". I think Kenobi will find his balance once he makes his connection with the force ghost of Qui Gon, it will heal his grief and most likely build up his confidence to use the force once again.

As much of an optimist you are Xelle, Anakin will never be conflicted here about Obi-Wan. The only person that can bring about that conflict within Anakin and bring him to the "Light" is Luke. That's why even Ahsoka couldn't do even though we glimpsed just a smidge of his goodness in Twilight of the Apprentice episode in Rebels.

I think Vader is waiting to follow Bens allies so he can slaughter them all.

We can all make a bunch of different theories for why Vader let Kenobi escape. Conflicted Vader seems valid. I personally think if it isn’t inner conflict, it may be to get even with Obi Wan, as it was Obi Wan who spared him first after he was burned. He could also be disappointed with the way he saw Kenobi, and wouldn’t be satisfied with killing a weakened version of him.

Hayden's in the suit for the close and mid-shots, but they have a 6'7" actor in the suit for the wide shots and stunt work.

I like so much about this show, there are great moments, yet there are some troubling things that I find myself making excuses for. “It is a feeling I’ve not sensed since…..”. The sequels. I guess I just gotta come to terms with, (like I did as a Star Trek fan) this isn’t my Star Wars anymore. Can always go back and watch to old shows. That felt better than trying to argue points….I guess it comes down to someone’s “point of view”.

I think Vader is almost disappointed about Obi-Wan, who clearly is not the Jedi he used to be. Vader spent years fantasising about this meeting, only to meet in the end a broken man. I don’t think Vader pity him of course, but inm think he feels that Obi hates himself as much as Vader himself. They are both shattered.

Xellle you have the ability to see Anakin's conflict within himself and Sidious asked him about it. Luke saw this same conflict and eventually, despite all the evil that Anakin/Vadar committed, was able to bring him back to the Light side. I understand why Leia used code when she contacted him using R2D2 in the New Hope. You didn't speak about this insidious racist BS about Moses Ingram but I heard what you said about being tolerable to others opinions. Getting back to the show and we're on a merry-go- round, it will become extremely difficult for Obi Wan to keep running, he will find strength in others and become himself.

I don't think he's conflicted in his career as Darth Vader till Luke comes into the picture which I like one of the reasons Kylo wasn't a great villain is because he was never a real villain always conflicted I like Vader being evil

I think they made a plot mistake, there was only one entrance to the tunnel and it only went one way, so how did Reva get in front of Leia??

I think Vader let Obi-Wan escape, Vader probably gets a thrill from the hunt. He wants Obi-Wan to suffer so he can have revenge, he saw how Obi-Wan was weak and not the man he used to know. He wants his revenge to not be easy but earned.

Another Vader scene that will instantly become a classic, him killing those civilians and dragging Kenobi through the fire. I'm really conflicted with the show so far mainly because they've created two huge contradictions and a possible third if they don't fix it very soon. This first being Kenobi's detachment from the force the past 10 years. I get the whole PTSD thing, so why tell Luke's uncle that when the time comes he will train Luke in the ways of the force? He even went at as far burying his light saber and trying to convince that other Jedi to do the same and give up on the force. How would he be able to train Luke to become a Jedi in this state of mind? If he's this detached from the force now, imagine in another 10 years. Also, how is he supposed to protect Luke in this condition? Second, all three episodes mention how Vader is obsessed with finding Obi-Won, he even tell Reva that he doesn't care about the grand inquisitor's death because he only cares about finding Kenobi and even threatens to kill her if she fails. Ten years waiting to face Kenobi and he just lets him go? We know he could've stopped him but he didn't. Wouldn't it make more sense to capture him and torture him some more? We've seen the torture toys they have in stock from the Fallen Order game. The last thing is the death of the grand inquisitor. They can still fix it obviously but if they don't, they'll be effectively retconning the whole first season of Rebels.

There is a great Legends story of Leia being trained to shoot. I wish they could get the rights, that would actually be a great 6 episode story. Or do their own variation. It would be during her teen years though. I think part of what Vader is doing is just to cause the terror in Obi-wan, but also to find more about how Jedi are being helped. Will he find Jebiim? :(
