One of the coolest prototype tanks of all time a real piece of history and engineering i hope they wont damage it (it does not have parts unlocked yet)
I've always pictured Object29 as this gigantic monstrous vehicle considering what it was designed for. Here it looked...just a taller tank compared to its contemporaries.
Well it only weighs 60 tons, it’s a superheavy, yes, just not Maus levels of Superheavy, most of its weight is in its extremely thick and well angled armor plating.
@CrimsonLancaster Lol what, tanks on average were definitely heaver back then. You're tripping, it's not a super heavy. The only ones going light at the time were the Germans who went dumbass mode and just gave up on trying to stop tank rounds and employeed the "nO aRmOr iS bEst arMoR" braindead take to little success ofc because it's fucking tank ofc you should give it proper armor. Crazy how long it took people to work out that more heavily armouring the front and limiting the side and back armor to auto cannon protection is a way better idea than using 80% of the front armor on the side and back which will end up letting through all the rounds the front armor would've protected while retaining the majority of the weight disadvantage. Bit of a rant but I'm saying with how weirdly tanks were being made until the 70's-80's you may be right but as far as I'm aware, you aren't
Weird how no one else has posted this and it sort of just came out of nowhere. Hopefully it's real and it's a one-of-a-kind artifact being restored to running order!
@@Pechenegus Hate to sound like "that guy", but can I get a source? Everything I've heard states that out of the three prototypes built only one survived (on display at Kubinka), and I can't seem to find a source stating that there is another in storage.
I always thought each track would have a form of differential steering such that the inner tracks would turn slower than the outer tracks during steering. It looks like each pair of sprockets is driven together as one. No wonder this tank was a pain to manoeuvre
Something as simple as that put on a tank will add the cost of production to an already immense expansive tank lol, i think there's the factor of complexity to it since it barely has any room between those tracks
yeh as soon as they drove it once they decided 2 objects was enough. it looks like the traction gear is going through a lot of pain aswell, making breakage much faster
@@sl06bhytmar I was watching a video of the T14 Armata and was shocked when it demonstrated neutral steering. Others might exist but I don't think I've ever seen a Soviet MBT with it.
@@AustraStronk Imagine getting this stuck in mud in the first place. Now THAT would be a challenge. This might be one of the best tanks for getting out of mud ever build
but at the same time the technicality was made so that it runs atleast on the minimum amount of 2 working tracks, i forgot where i read about it, but also the 279 could detach any of its 4 running gear tracks and carry on. Much like the tire-driven tank prototypes
@@AustraStronk This kind of tank is very unlikely to be stuck in mud, since thats what 4 tracks are for. The weight vs pressure area on the ground is 4 times less then other tanks.
@@NguyenLyubyuStranaThe T28 was a prototype and weighed 95 tons, the outer tracks being removeable was solely to fit it on a train car, the thing would’ve eaten the suspension and sank into the ground without the outer track modules.
@@barryallenporter8127 but in actually combat situation in europe (if it was used) it will not use the outer tracks to fit on the bridges, city road and stuff like that
@@Maverick966 With it's slope armor and no advanced HEAT or APFSDS. Only AP, APCRs, APHE, HE and old HEAT rounds were unable to pen this guy. Not really best with its downsides but it is a hard nut to crack indeed. Until new rounds developed of course.
@@assaulthetz380 In the 60s it was impenetrable, it had a lot less downsides compared to previus heavy tanks, Soviets didn't put it in production just because they were abandoning the heavy tank doctrine in favor of T-55 and T-62

This would make for a challenging model build. As of the moment, all of the available kits of this tank, in both 1/35 and 1/72, have modeled the hull (upper and lower) as one continuous piece. As can be seen in the video, the actual tank used metal skirts attached to the hull to achieve its distinctive UFO shape. What makes this video so invaluable to the modeler is that it shows all of the previously hidden detail of the hull, skirt mounts, braces and frames. What I find particularly interesting is the contrast between the crisp flowing lines of the skirt panels compared to the wavy, almost crude appearance of the cast hull. Making this thing as shown would require major surgery to any of the existing kits followed by a lot of finnicky scratch building. It would look pretty awesome if it could be pulled off, though.
I've modeled it before in Lego. I've done way larger vehicles with motorization and RC control. This thing at a tiny scale was the hardest thing I've ever worked on. It's a nightmare to get looking right.
There is a Russian version of this video which has longer duration and confirms this was in Kubinka. And it was posted close to 2 weeks ago Edit: Link is in the reply section
War Thunder Russian mains bookmarking this thinking it will be a viable strategy to win arguments against everyone saying that it shouldn't be in the game.
This thing was and is a work of art imo. If it was property retrofitted it may actually be useful. But I doubt it will and despite its armor and loading mechanism is obsolete to newer tanks. I still love this tank.
Nah, this tank is history. It's unlikely have any superb speed. Difficulty producing, difficulty repairing. Plus the modern warfare - this armor is useless, since it's time for lighter armor and more active armor. There is zero info on its electronics and scope systems, they are absolete due to its time.
279 has a remarkably low weight per square meter of ground contact, and would not sink into the mud like it’s contemporaries, despite it’s significant weight. Also it is capable of driving with one track from each side being missing.
@@UHOH3300 All true, but there are situations where that is irrelevant. "Capable" doesn't mean you're going to do it. In combat, yes. In training, no. And simply getting under it and trying to wield a tankers bar and sledgehammer is going to be very tough.
max is right, weight distribution will equal mobility mud is the king in Ukraine. The 4 set of tracks will be good for self-propelled artillery but not in combat. The Abrams tank at140 tons will sink in asphalt roads and will only be useable for 3 months of the year. Pickup trucks will get you there.
@@StrikeWyvern yeah, making "nuclear proof" beast with 130 mm cannon from scratch, when T-55A existed was kinda not worth it. But it wasn't "too heavy", because all heavy tanks has been considered obsolete by that time.
@@RaikoTechnologies I say it was too heavy due to the fact that heavy tanks were obsolete, and also the fact that there was a rule in the USSR that a tank couldn't be over 48 tons. This one was 60.
Notice the complex (and probably the reason it failed) rear end sprocket wheels. Seems like multiple connections and gears to drive the power fom the engine to the sprocket wheel.
I honestly don't see how it could have anything else but a big chain drive in there. It just seems like whatever is in there isn't gonna hold up. Russia has great natural resources, but, well, they don't really have the best reputation for metallurgy.
@@Klovaneer Doesn't really go against my point. My S&W also uses Russian titanium. Like I said, they got great resources. If Russia hadn't fallen to Soviet Communism, they would've been a true super-power, and not just one on paper with a strong military. They got real potential now with Putin, but it's hard to know whose side he is really on, other than his own. A century of communism, tho, might be too much to expect a recovery from.

@Konstantin_Omsk it should be in a the koblnka? That museum like the maus yes it's still outside in the elements but it's not facing them head on. Obj 279 is an important peice to tank history as it shows the designs that 4 tracks aren't good , the nuclear scare and some other nick nacks

you think? Why is it that in every actual combat arena where Russian made designs have faced tanks like the Abrams, Merkava, etc that they have lost? They were way ahead of the bar in the 1940s when they were smart enough to accept the Christie design along with the foresight to use diesels in their theater but since then they have been proven to be paper tigers. This isnt war thunder. Looks ungainly and not at all nimble. With zero combat record to fall back on how can you say its the best of anything? Someone thought the Maus would be the ultimate MBT too. oops.
@@T0tenkampf Obviously someone believes that the mouse is the best battle tank, but some also believe the earth is flat. In this condition, as we see the tank there, no tank would be agile, not even the Bundeswehr Weasel. Why it's the best main battle tank design is quite simple. This armor is form-optimized against missiles and is designed to withstand a hit from a nuke. There was a similar concept with the Americans, but that was really negligible in comparison. Similarly, the mouse's weight was a little too high for bridges, but otherwise in a modernized version it could certainly be handled. So I'm sticking with it! The BEST main battle tank design!
