For me, observation is the most important skill you can have when doing street photography.
Learning to soak in the city and the setting to better understand your composition and subject matter makes all the difference.

Thanks Adrian. Just taking a moment. I suppose it's trying to bring a level of mindfulness to something that requires a lot of thinking and planning. You ever get that state of flow when taking and thinking through a photograph? Achieving that flow without the mind racing and considering every possible detail would be a state of mind that would be incredible when wandering around with your camera.

🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 I struggle with this so much, and it's so weird that you uploaded this topic, because I was thinking this exact thing last night when I was out shooting. I was in an area that had a couple nice angles to hit with the drone, but then I started mulling about with my camera. At first nothing seemed interesting, then angles and details started pulling out. The moon showed up. Beavers swimming. A plane flew by strangely low. The water was calm and offering up reflections. When you stop and chill for a minute, instead of forcing yourself to look for things, they seem to reveal themselves to you.

I know exactly what you're talking about man. I was just thinking about this a few days ago while with a friend shooting. I love going out with people to shoot, lately I've realized that with other people I tend to move through an area a lot faster than if I were alone. When I'm with someone I feel that if we're lingering too long we're not maximizing our time out. But if I were alone I'd be in a given spot for a while. We can't take time to really observe when we're constantly on the move. And I know how it started too, over time our style changed to more run and gun because for whatever reason just straight portraits became what we were looking for. Now I'm trying to go back to how I used to shoot because I feel that my photos were a lot better and they said something more.

Thanks for the comment Zach! I think its important to drink in the enviroment and become part of it while you're there. If you choose to go out and be there then you owe it to yourself to fully embrace it and engage with it. Having the camera doesn't mean shooting 1000 images because you can.. I like to wait until something different happens or see if theres patterns and things like that. It always makes for a deeper feeling of discovery and exploration into the photographs 😎😍

I definitely enjoy your channel and your style I have been contemplating this for a while and I am in the process of getting a micro 4/3 camera specifically the Olympus cameras. They used to have a feature on their older models that allowed you to record video would and press the shutter button and snap a photo in between in RAW which is a wonderful feature. I think in case you see something in the moment you don’t need to switch modes and still snap a picture and then resume recording right after. They most recently removed the feature. But either way looking forward to more content take care and stay safe.

Hi Connor, yes.i like where your going with this, and about time someone was saying it ! Some of the main contributors look as though street photography was an Olympic sport, with who can shoot the most crap and make something from it later ? Lots of guys seem to love jumping into people’s faces. I ask myself where is the quality, originality , the observational comment, and the things worth waiting for? I seldom if ever see shots by these guys and think Wow I’d love a print of that ... The machine gun approach has never appealed to me, Some of them should go out for the day with a single roll of film that they love, and that would make them far better photographers, and enable them to think and feel first. Or at least deactivate their motor drives ! You and Gareth Danks, are definitely on my wavelength, keep it up, we love quality.

Thanks, Gary for the lovely comment! I'm definitely going to get back into film shooting! I might do a few videos on it and then do a massive reveal when I get them developed and we can look through together 😎 Gareths doing some great content and I love watching his videos. They've got a nice pace to them and he's got a nice eye for a photo😍

Connor Dunne Connor Dunne Hi Connor, I do hope that my comment didn’t come across as prescriptive, as I’ve watched you for a while now and you have a great take on the subjects, a great presence, and best of all a well tempered ego (if only that were a contactable condition). I do genuinely feel that were people to be shooting on film, they would definitely see shots and feel the excitement in their bodies. Like playing an instrument when it begins to come together. I always tell new photographers that the best way to improve their composition is to treat the camera as though they only have one frame, do you believe in this shot ?... So what your doing and planning is very exciting to watch. Thanks for returning the message . Gary

hahahahahah cheers Wolf! Spent a few weeks up in belfast a couple years back and had a deadly time. Worked up there a few times with Ulster Rugby and the IRFU 😀That military surplus had might not be a bad idea 😂

Great video. Recently I’ve stopped walking around so much, I’m much more selective now and allow things to develop more in front of me. This has lead to a drop in photos per day but I think the overall quality has improved. Thanks for sharing 👍

It was always a concern of mine that once I go out I need to make sure I get some keepers and that naturally led me to the scattergun approach of shooting waaaay more than I needed to! Standing still and letting the scene open up and having the camera of single shot mode has certainly made me engage more with my photography 😃

Connor Dunne while I don’t think there’s anything wrong in either method I’ve come to the conclusion that waiting for the scene to develop often delivers a better quality of image. Walking around endlessly brings in the element of luck that you’ll walking into something. That said, I still find myself from time to time still praying and spraying, even with years of experience I still can’t shake it lol. Great channel and thanks for sharing your thoughts and skills 👍
