The poor editing performance was a result of Final Cut Pro, the video files edit flawlessly in DaVinci Resolve. Oddly H.265 actually plays fine in quicktime and has less stuttering in Final Cut Pro. Using BlackMagic RAW Speed Test I get 110p @ 8K Metal and 30p @ 8K CPU rendering performance.

Bro... you might get some better performance (other than hardware limitations) if you deep clean that case, repaste the CPUs, upgrade your storage speed (go for 7200rpm drives if they arent' already and keep in mind the NVMe will be limited by the PCIe lanes which are very few and not direct to CPU like modern motherboards. Additionally, the lack of airflow is ridiculous... the NVMe drives are SUBSTANTIALLY cutting off your GPU airflow which most likely causes it to thermal throttle which is most definitely affecting your editing times.

First 4k video! With plenty more to come. Still have a few 1080p projects in progress so there will be a mix of 1080p and 4K videos over the next few months. For those concerned about my graphics card airflow, the fans actually don't even turn on until its under load. I can put my finger on the metal heatsink while its on and its only slightly warm. Even after spending 8hrs editing this video. So I am not concerned.

These 6-pin plugs on the motherboard are rated 75W each, while 8-pin ones on the GPU are designed for 150W, and most likely will draw more than 75W. 7:06 In the menu bar you can see my CPU's run around 33-44 degrees. No need to change the thermal paste. As for the GPU, most PC's have the slot on the other side to the card faces the other way but this design doesn't allow for that. Although one fan is completely exposed the over is mostly covered, there is a slight gap for airflow but it doesn't concern me, the majority of the time the fans are not even running on the card unless its under a big load. I edited for 9hrs straight on the computer and I could touch the heatsink and it wasn't even hot.

You are actively shortening the life span of this computer with negligence. For electronics, heat is always a killer and this card will cook itself.

@nickwallette6201
@nickwallette6201 2 года назад
A lot of people, who assume they are clever but are unfortunately just ignorant, are quick to blame lots of things on planned obsolescence. Much of the time other rational explanations are more likely. But in this case, it's definitely a conscious decision to drop support for a platform. Now, I guess I can't really blame a company for ending support on a 10-year-old platform. That's well past the expected life cycle for a computer, and supporting old hardware definitely has tangible costs, so it's a defensible decision. But, Moore retired quite a while ago, and aside from the efficiency concerns, the 2009/2010 Mac Pros are still viable computers for a lot of things, so it's a shame that Apple has not merely given up supporting them, but actively blocked new OSes from installing, and new software from running on older OSes. I honestly don't believe it's entirely a ploy to get people to buy new computers. After all, I'm sure many people who had or have one of these would still buy something newer -- and perhaps just use both. (I do/did.) I think it has more to do with the complexity of ensuring software compatibility on older hardware that somebody would have to maintain for testing and QA, and interoperability with older OSes. Since _most_ people would have moved on, it's an increasing level of effort with decreasing return on investment. It doesn't make financial sense, so it would have to be something done for the sake of it. That's the antithesis of running lean and mean. Still a shame.
@Andy2x4
@Andy2x4 2 года назад
@@nickwallette6201 So you’re calling anyone who believes in planned obsolescence ignorant? I’m not entirely sure people want to buy a new dishwasher or washing machine every time theirs break down. Repairs are usually more expensive than replacing the product, so you tell me that companies are doing it because that’s what people want! Never mind the environmental footprint. The main aim of any business is to make a profit. Just remember that.
@nickwallette6201
@nickwallette6201 2 года назад
@@Andy2x4 No, that isn't what I'm saying at all, actually. I'm saying that sometimes things break, and sometimes mistakes are made, sometimes engineering choices are daft out of sheer incompetence. Not all of those cases were conscious decisions to design a product to fail, but I think in a lot of cases, people are so loathe to be taken for a fool that their first instinct is assume malice against them. I think your assessment of THIS was spot on. Apple drew an arbitrary line in the sand and called the hardware obsolete, when in fact it's perfectly good. I also believe people should have the right to repair. BUT... I think we all need to consider the costs of that right, and make reasonable, informed decisions on what _is_ and what _isn't_ blatant disregard for consumer rights and environmental impact. While the Mac Pro 2010 is obsolete, it is still viable. At the same time, I don't expect Apple to maintain stock of spare parts for a computer they haven't produced in 10 years. I don't expect them to spend hundreds of hours testing software and drivers for compatibility. I would, however, like them to take a "best effort" stance on it, though. That is, don't block the ability for later OSes to install, and make available the drivers -- untested and without warranty, if needs be ... or just allow nVidia / AMD to call the shots on whether to support it. I.e., I'm willing to let it die from attrition or old age, but not because somebody says its time has come.

Its actually fine, despite initial looks. Some people have popped two GPU's in and its fine. The front to back fan setup works really well and the mesh design does help a lot. The cringe for me is the dust. That's got the look of a floor pc use dust condition 😬

Same model here. Installed SSD and Zorin OS (Ubuntu). Then added a few of the modern drivers through the Ubuntu 22.04 and this thing rocks - and looks amazing! What I love about these models is how modular they are, and the engineering is one of the best ive seen.

Still using my wife’s 2012 Mac book pro and revived it with parts from my 2009 Mac book pro. In the start of covid it was a fun little project. Added 16gb of ram replaced her track pad with my old 2009 track pad. Replaced the battery with my old 2009 battery which was replaced under warranty right before it went south. Added a 2.5” ssd and using bootcamp to use windows 10 or Mac OS when ever we want too for certain apps that work on windows but not Mac OS and Vice versa. Switched out her cd drive with my old cd which was also replaced under warranty from apple. Fixed the wobbly display issue those generation Mac book pros suffer from and then her Mac book pro was pretty much brand new and works so well for such an older laptop. It just flys on windows and runs very well on Mac OS. It’s a Frankenstein build but it’s awesome knowing it was saved and not just sitting around not being used.

Apple doesn’t really do planned obsolescence anymore… iPhone 6s getting iOS 15, 2015 MacBook getting Monterey? You seem to be going harsh on apple despite other PC manufacturers doing similar things. Don’t even get me started on when you said the 2011 MacBook Pro GPUs were Apples Fault. The 5000 and 6000 series AMD GPUs failed on every Mac that had them. Even with sufficient cooling. I’ll be honest Hugh, i love your stuff, and I’ve watched lots of your content and I love what you do but I don’t get why you seem to hate apple so much. Unless I’m missing something. Not a hate comment. Just a…. Comment from a passionate apple fan.

I had a couple of these from 07-08 lying around with only one left. Couldnt get it to boot last time I messed with it but I think it was just the side door sensor. NVMe would make a big difference, as its already a dual Xeon system. Dont let companies win - R2R and other consumer protections pushing against upgrade and repair prevention are needed, in tech and other industries. I usually dont like regulation, but pro-consumer and pro-small business/competition is an area that makes sense. Reduce, reuse, REPAIR, recycle!

5:26 You don’t need power modifications to run a 5700XT, though it would be wise to do the Pixlas mod just in case. Some 5700XT’s peak above 300 watts (more than the 2x 150W per mini 6-pin) and could fry your motherboard. I did the mod only to run an RX580 since a friend of mine fried his motherboard in that way…

Having seen all these videos, one question remains: Why do tech guys principally use compressed air to clean off the dust? And spend fortunes for highly pressurized canned air (see the respective Jason Villmer video). Especially such a clean, tidy, neatness-loving character as Hugh? Is it something in the genes? Something which makes technicians wanting to keep their dust active? Since the mid-eighties, I am using a secret thing called a 'vacuum cleaner' to tidy up PCs, something revolutionary and unheard of in the repair community. Even Jessa doesn't seem to use one, and she is a woman (I have observed in my lifetime that women fancy vacuum cleaners). With love (and a broad smile) from Germany
