THE BOAT: Scow Bow Mini-Cruiser. 14’ long (4.25M,) with a 6’ beam (1.8M,) and a draft of 2’6” (0.77M.) She features twin keels and a Ljungström rig. Every design decision is made to keep her simple, strong, and watertight.
In this episode I build a base for the mainsheet fairlead to lift it up a little. I also make plans for a latch system to hold down the hatch over the deck locker.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind for some of your filler episodes for you to tell us a little bit about your planned voyage, how you decided to build the boat, where you find materials, the books you're reading etc etc. Grats on 9k subs!

As others have already stated, just knowing what you are doing, and seeing the boat proceeding with precision work each episode, is gratifying for us. You don't need to stress yourself and push the envelope by trying to do one episode per day. No one expects that for sure! You're amazing, anyway! Well done!

Of course, there’s always a trade-off. It is nice to see a little something every day, but in a way I think I would almost rather see a full length video once a week. And as someone else said, I would really love to hear what your plans are for when the boat is finished. Maybe Hawaii? 😉

Really enjoying the mini episodes, but don't stress at all if they're not daily. Love watching your amazing ocean capable sailing vessel take shape, regardless of the video schedule. Well done!

Thanks for the dailies, but really do what is comfortable for you, we support you either way. Hatch cover, as others have said, wave pressure will push passed the compression seal unless under good pressure. You would be surprised at how much that compression force needs to be. Suggest using hinges on the outboard side at least

If a little water gets in it's fine. The locker has a drain. This is storage for things I don't want to bring into the cabin, like wet fenders and dock lines.

Don't worry about daily vids, just shoot for a couple per week. It looks like your subscriber numbers have started to increase ... maybe posting these short vids kicked up your channel's exposure by the algorithm. That's a plus!!!

Superb. Hey, would you consider adding a second gasket to the underside of the hatch door, slightly larger diameter than the deck gasket… just for redundancy? Perhaps that’s overkill. Regardless, please keep up the great work 😃

I have a recessed hatch with latches and gasket on my kayak (CLC Shearwater) and they are far from being watertight. Rolling the kayak 10 times results in 100ml of water.
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 5 месяцев назад
That's fine, the locker has a drain and sits much higher off the water than a kayak. I just don't want to make it _too_ easy for water to get in.
@EdToml

Think you may be underestimating what waves and water will do. Those latches are great inside, know I'd want something more secure outside.

It's G10, incredibly strong. It'll be stronger than most any other plastic hatches people buy and install on their decks.

Day 6 of commenting on daily OCSS videos! Don't worry about keeping up a rigorous schedule, especially if you feel like its wearing you thin! I can only speak for myself, but I'll be here to watch your fascinating voyage from building to sailing your unique vessel no matter what your release schedule looks like. Question about the latch design: Because the latches are going to support the compression force from the gasket, the force will be loaded onto the latches similar to if they were diving boards. Is the material (G10) stiff enough in that direction for them to support that compression from the gasket long term? If the latch material is stiff enough, that force will be carried by the drill-fill-drilled holes in the top of the locker, is there any chance that force could cause them to wiggle back and forth in the set epoxy? I'm not familiar with the materials you're using, so, if they're robust enough then this won't be an issue at all.

Love your design to latch the cover down. I was wondering how you were going todo that and even thinkig that maybe you were going touse somekid odelastic leash on the inside to hold it down, but thhen tyhought that would not be feasible for the long haul or in rough weather.
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 5 месяцев назад
At first I was going to use a bungee inside to pull it down onto its gasket. But another boat builder advised me that wasn't good enough for offshore work and it makes sense to me. I could see wave lifting the hatch cover off if just a bungee is pulling it down. 4 G-10 latches should be pretty damn bullet-proof.

I have to say that I have doubts about your hatch cover, I think that if you just rely on a gasket it is going to start to leak, probably at an awkward time. I'm no expert on boat design but I would want a raised section around the opening, under the gasket, with a lip around the edge of the cover, so that gravity would be supporting the gasket in keeping out the water, not working against it.
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 5 месяцев назад
There is no awkward time, this is a small locker separate from the cabin. If a little water gets in it's fine. The locker has a drain. This is storage for things I don't want to bring into the cabin, like wet fenders and dock lines.

Need your opinion on a design choice I'm thinking of having on the sailboat I'm designing. The total length is 20 ft., and I want to have at least 5 ft. of cockpit. Would it be a good idea to have a sort of open rear cockpit slot with a slopped floor toward aft for when it fills with water it can just all rush out the back. While your designed vessel is amazing, I want mine to have 6ft head room in the cabin with storage/bunks under a above waterline cockpit like a traditional sailing vessel. But you comment in a previous video about cockpits getting flooded made me thing of the big brain tunnels in the rear at floor height.
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 5 месяцев назад
If I had to have a cockpit on a good offshore sailboat then yes I'd make it open on the aft end. There are a lot of good examples you can see online. Or at least 2 large holes in the transom for a lot of water to drain out quickly. I'd think again about 6' headroom in a 20' boat. You'll end up with a bit odd looking boat, and you can do a lot with sitting headroom instead. If you can stand under the main hatch and cook that might be enough. Just my opinion though. Might be worth it to talk with a naval architect. Good luck!
@rebuildingnoseas
@rebuildingnoseas 5 месяцев назад
That's the set up on my Balboa 26'... It works well. The aft end of the cockpit has a little cantered well about 2" wide. It's sloped from either side to the middle. And in the middle there's a 1.5" square ish hole that exits under the boat. It's a great design I think, And it allows for really fast drainage of the cockpit it especially comes in handy for washing and never gets clogged like scupper drains. I could send you a pic but can't post one here obviously.

Good job keeping up as long as you did. Aren’t you concerned with the locker cover not being fastened to the boat, if it were to get knocked or dropped overboard?
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 5 месяцев назад
Thank you. In OCSS-074Pt1 I installed a padeye inside the locker and on the underside of the hatch cover so that it can have a leash keeping it attached to the boat.

@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 5 месяцев назад
hm, maybe do a roll-over test and see if you even need it first. If the boat rights pretty well on its own why bother? If it stays turtled or is too slow to recover then go for it.
