THE BOAT: Scow Bow Mini-Cruiser. 14’ long (4.25M,) with a 6’ beam (1.8M,) and a draft of 2’6” (0.77M.) She features twin keels and a Ljungström rig. Every design decision is made to keep her simple, strong, and watertight.
In this episode I cap off the ends of my custom carbon fiber tubes with tight fitting 1” long PVC foam plugs. I then cover the plugs with thickened epoxy and a couple layers of 6oz fiberglass. I then attach the oak handrail bases to the aft deck, and the tubes to the bases with thickened epoxy. After that I secure the tubes to the bases, hull, and deck with a few layers of 6oz cloth. A little work with the utility knife and sandpaper cleans them up and they’re good to go.

Handrails came out awesome! Also I don’t see that raised round block for the tiller keeping much water out lol. Your kids added at the end was cool, you should plan something small they can help with before it’s done so they can point to it in the future and say “I did that”

That raised disk will have a HDP slippery disk on top of it, then a flange on that which is attached to a 1" SS tube. It's all close fitting and greased up in the end. Hard to describe in text but it should be watertight.

That apple didn’t fall far from the tree now did it? What a pleasant surprise your son bring over a build of his own! Very nice! (Well done on the hand rails too! )

Ha- watching the video I was thinking that the spacing on the side rails looked a bit long. I think it’s smart to add a center support. It’s too handy a place not to use to tie up to or use for things other than just a handrail. I do like the concept!

I went back to Episode 35 to remind myself about the internal steering. One thing that struck me that I didn't think about the first time I watched the Episode is that the hatch is really tight. You were just squeezing through wearing a T-shirt, what will happen when you are wearing your wet/cold weather gear or if the worst happens and you have to get out while wearing a survival suit and life jacket?

Just found your chann last week and have been bing watching. I am currently building a SCAMP. I See you use a lot chip brushes. A trick I learned for them and epoxy is to cut the bristles to about half their length. Makes them stiffer for spreading the epoxy.

I love that your kids are part of the building experience. Is the boat big enough for you to take them sailing with you on day trips?😊
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 5 месяцев назад
Yes! I might convince them to go on some local sails and sleep on the boat, and little day sails. We'll see. My daughter's more into the sailing than my son.

It's obvious to me you are a better boat builder than I, I've never built one. But If it were me,I would add some sort of mechanical fastener to the handrail supports. Maybe a lag bolt from underneath. If my life were on the line I would feel better with mechanical support along with chemical adhesion as double insurance. But that's just an opinion.
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 5 месяцев назад
Initially I thought I would, but with so many bases attached with fiberglass and thickened epoxy it just has such a strong attachment to the boat. Much stronger than my grip is, I'm sure.

hi. grate work.thanks for your content of boat building. if i use leebord on my boat do i need stil add keel or some sort of ballast to my boat or no need? best regard
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 5 месяцев назад
I'd just look at lee-board design sailboats out there. They don't usually have a keel, but they likely have ballast secured in the bottom of the hull, and I imagine many have lead in the bottom of their lee-boards but I'm admittedly no expert in the subject.

Hello . I am your new subscriber. I like what you do. I would like to ask, what material is the hull of your yacht made of? Looks like foam. But I don’t understand the exact name of the sheet material that you use to build the hull of the yacht. Please write what kind of plastic this is.
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 4 месяца назад
Thanks for subscribing. It's 10mm PVC structural foam. It is sandwiched between layers of fiberglass.

@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 5 месяцев назад
You can be on deck when it's nice with this boat, but on long distance sails one is typically spending more time out of the elements in the cabin. I can only roast in the sun for so long. I'm building this for long passages.
