THE BOAT: Scow Bow Mini-Cruiser. 14’ long (4.25M,) with a 6’ beam (1.8M,) and a draft of 2’6” (0.77M.) She features twin keels and a Ljungström rig. Every design decision is made to keep her simple, strong, and watertight.
In this episode I remove peel ply and clean up the starboard coaming deck. I then drill holes for my G-10 latches that will secure the deck locker hatch cover. G-10 is a high-pressure fiberglass laminate material.
Movie clip at the end is from The Sand Pebbles (1966) directed by Robert Wise. Stars Steve McQueen, Richard Attenborough, Richard Crenna and Candice Bergen.

The line itself may hold some water from spray or rain. I think it will tend to drip dry beneath the cam cleat inside. You could just put a little scupper under it and connect another hose to your existing drain.

Boats looking great, I think the amount of water coming through the tube will be insignificant compared to the water coming off of the main sheet. Use a tote or bucket with a rag or two, maybe a sponge.

Yes, I think so too.

Simply put, the small amount of water in the cabin coming in through the Water resistant tube will require your attention and generate a task. I think moisture from rain soaked sheets will produce more water than from heavy weather or sea conditions. I envision that you will need "tasks" in order to occupy your time at sea, I'm thinking a microfiber absorbent towel and some hand wringing will occupy your body and mind for a short time, offering a brief reprieve from the SOP of operating the vessel. After a few days at sea in squalls, cleaning up the water from the Water resistant tube may become some of the best 5 minutes of your day. Maybe an external splash shield of some sort. Loving the 10 episodes series.

Love the mini episodes ! This is what it's like: having a family,having a job and trying to build a boat too. Finding time, one day after another. Good luck building, and hope to see your next episode. Thanks for sharing (will cost you extra time...).

Thank you. Yes I like a channel that reflects more real life amateur projects, rather than big sponsorships and unlimited budgets.

about the water for the mainsail sheet... the lines will soak up water... so the "moisture" will come via your line. I guess maybe the line inside the boat must first go UP to your deck and then go down to the cleat. But.. the sheet can always be 'wet'

If you are looking for a drill press you are missing, I've seen a couple of variants of portable ones on Amazon, where you attach your regular drill. Some times called drill guide bracket or drill stand.

That's what I was thinking. On Pinterest there are several homemade versions with video instruction. But most require a small amount of welding to complete.

Thank you for the clip from the movie 'the sand Pebbles' its a movie that I saw a glimpse of many years ago and always wondered what the name was so I could watch it. A great movie

As you are bringing the sheets into the cabin, they will be wet often and that will bring in more moisture than any coming in directly through that tube for the sheet. You will need a tails bin or bag which will contain the moisture as best it can although it is going to add to the humidity of the interior quite a bit. Hopefully you get days where you can have a lot more ventilation and mitigate the effects. I am confident you have a solution.

Thanks. A solution will probably become clearer with real world testing at sea.

You might be able to run the sheet through a small hole in a stretched diaphragm of say, 2mm silicone sheeting that would act as a wiper. If it was outside the cabin, you would not need a catch basin. Perhaps with the correct diameter hole in the diaphragm and the correct thickness of material, it would squeegee off the sheet without providing any significant resistance.

Masonary drills. Here there is also carbid tipped drills for tiles. They are differently grinded, more like a metal drill. I use them and they work fine. Have a look.

I am so surprised that you have had trouble drilling G10. I have used cheap (but sharp) twist bits from harbor freight and also step bits. I generally drill a small hole first to accommodate the point and then finish with the size I want. The step bit has the added benefit of chamfering the edge of the hole if I want it to.
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 5 месяцев назад
It's such strong stuff. I would often have my drill snag in it. But in the early days I was using the wrong bits.

Can’t help but think that the latches on the hatch could have been eliminated. Did you consider a bungee cord attached to the underside pulling it loses with a small handle to lift it open? That would give you a secure hatch no latches in the way, only a small handle. Lift and turn the hatch and it’s open. If you need to remove fully, you could unclip the bungee. If it’s not too late, maybe something to consider. Love watching this come together and seeing your channel grow. 10k subscribers coming soon!

Thank you. The bungee was my first plan, but after getting the opinions of some other builders I was advised against it. Not secure enough for offshore use. I can understand it, a wave could lift up the lid and pour in water.

Nice video as always! I know you've talked about this before, and that you don't have a firm target for the weight of the boat, and that it's hard to predict. But I'm very curious, what do you think would be the acceptable maximum dry weight? And what would be the dry weight you would be happy with? Thank you very much for the videos. I'm looking forward to seeing you enjoy the fruits of your hard labor on the open water!

Thanks. I really don't think about the weight. I'll be sure to weigh it when done, though, because I get this question alot.

I was just thinking your mainsheet system. If you have your mainsheet in the inside cam cleat and you go on-deck sailing: -you can tension it more and lock on the outside cam cleat -BUT you can’t loosen it without going inside! 🤯 Should the mainsheet system be two ended: another end outside an other inside? 🧐 2:11
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 5 месяцев назад
Yes, it will be a little clunky switching from outside sheeting to inside sheeting or vice versa. I think on long passages it can stay on the internal sheeting mostly. In the bay/close to shore with fine weather I could just keep it on the outside system. So, it shouldn't need to be switched much. Some testing will put more light on it I'm sure.

Can you fix something to hold a small, maybe 1/3 or 1/2 pint plastic cup underneath the mainsheet tube? Then all you would have to do would be to empty it occasionally.

I can’t think of a single thing to keep the inside from getting wet…. If your main sheet is soaked . Keep the tail in a bucket .
@tonysutton6559
@tonysutton6559 5 месяцев назад
Or a suitable sized dry bag (which will be a wet bag on the inside).

Inside the cabin mostly. Can chill on the aft deck in nice weather, there will be plenty of handrails surrounding it eventually.

Enjoy the build so far but not a fan of the short daily vidios. Over 2 minutes before any work and after all the talking about 2 minutes of work. Roll on when you do one vidio a week....Dave
