THE BOAT: Scow Bow Mini-Cruiser. 14’ long (4.25M,) with a 6’ beam (1.8M,) and a draft of 2’6” (0.77M.) She features twin keels and a Ljungström rig. Every design decision is made to keep her simple, strong, and watertight.
In this episode I build the bases for the aft deck handrails out of oak.

I love seeing this thing coming together. And I love the mini episodes. I can imagine it’s a lot of work and it has a different flavor than your other videos but I really like them. You are a testament to what a regular guy with some hand tools and some vision can create. Keep up the good work and don’t forget about me when it’s time to find somebody to drive the trailer to Mexico.

Hello from Sweden! I just wanted to thank you for these mini episodes. I like it much more than the format you had before, although a slightly longer episode would be perfect. With kind regards, Julio Martin.

Perry, I use a small 3 gallon shop vac with a Harbor Freight dust cyclone hooked to my sander and it catches like 95% of the dust. It’s a pretty cheap rig if you want to try and control your sanding dust.

Interesting, thanks. It would be nice not to have all the dust I deal with.

Loving the short videos, it's better than having to wait for a bit long one but I would imagine that editing and uploading multiple short videos is more time consuming than doing a weekly compilation. It's too late now but it might have been better to use your router to cut a groove along the top of the supports to hold the handrails while it was all in one long length and then shape it to fit the outer diameter of the rails. What make of router are you using? It looks like the little one that I got from Aldi. It's not as powerful as my big 1/2 inch one, but it's quick and easy to set up and takes up very little space if I need a router away from my workshop.

Thanks for the latest episode, Captain. I’ve enjoyed them all. You asked a long time ago about good vehicles for towing your new boat. Sorry I did not do it earlier but I’ll just briefly plug the Honda Ridgeline because you already have a Honda, and I assume you like it. I bought a 2021 model and it drives very nicely, like a regular car. It has the same chassis as the Pilot and Odyssey. It might be a little more than you need, but when towing that isn’t such a bad thing. Total towing capacity is 5,000 lbs. I’ve used mine for towing and launching my 3,500 lb. Boston Whaler.
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 5 месяцев назад
Thank you for the tip! I do like Hondas. I'm hoping to find some compromise that can serve as a family car and still capable on the slip. I was recently leaning towards the Subaru Outback

@@ocean_capable_small_sailboat Another great car, we bought a used one for my daughter. When my kids were the ages of yours, we went everywhere in a Honda Odyssey, in some cases towing a trailer with a Flying Dutchman, bicycles and kayaks. With the middle seat removed, it was luxurious for long road trips, as we only had two kids, and being up a little higher makes visibility while towing better.

Thank you for this video. No problem to cut the carbon glass with a wood saw ?
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 5 месяцев назад
Not sure. It cut quite easily. It probably dulls the blade faster than wood does.

@@ocean_capable_small_sailboat I think they feel the mini episodes are to short, but I think getting an episode every couple days has been great.

Wouldn't a hand plane have smoothed off the sides faster?
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat

Could be. I admit I'm no great woodworker, but I do enjoy it.
@tonysutton6559

@@ocean_capable_small_sailboat I'm as happy working with wood for my boat as sailing it. It gives me something to do when the weather is too bad or I can't get out on the wzter for some other reason. A hand plane in that situation is better than a sander because it is quicker, quieter, more satisfying and plane shavings do less harm to your lungs than sanding dust. It doesn't have to be an expensive, top of the range modern plane. A 100 year old, cheap Record or Stanley No 4 or 4 1/2 plane off EBay is just as good if you sharpen it. You can also keep an old plane in your on-board tool kit whereas you don't really want to take power tools.
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 5 месяцев назад
Thanks. I have a power planer but may have to add a hand one.

Is it white oak? Maybe it doesn't matter, but white oak was traditionally used in marine applications where it might get wet. White oak does not wick water along it's grain, but red oak does. To test, place a scrap on end in a puddle (jar lid) of water, if it wicks water up along the grain then it's red oak.
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 5 месяцев назад
It's white oak, I bought it at the start of the build for my keel supports.
@rebuildingnoseas
@rebuildingnoseas 5 месяцев назад
I'm thinking that I am also going to use mainly white oak throughout my boat rebuild as well. It was used by many a boat builder, for framing for hundreds of years and was rock solid. Are you coating it with anything? Or do you think it's necessary? Maybe some linseed oil or are you epoxying it?
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 5 месяцев назад
It's buried in epoxy and layers of fiberglass. I do have some cedar on the boat that only has citrus oil on it though.
@rebuildingnoseas
@rebuildingnoseas 5 месяцев назад
@@ocean_capable_small_sailboat I'm using Cedar on the interior. Cedar and scavenged Teak. Funny thing, when I lived in Thailand, Teak was literally everywhere. And it was just wood, like we have pine or maybe elm. But Teak...everything is made from Teak there, and it's super cheap. Also Indonesian hard-plywood is really cheap there. I was going to build a Wharram Tiki-31 there and travel all over the S.Pacific. Had it not been for COVID I would probably still be there building that boat. It's really difficult to build anything in Thailand if you're not a Thai national. The Thai government is very restrictive on foreigners living in the country and most Thai people only know one phrase "me-dai" roughly translated to "cannot". It's too bad because, the world there is a beautiful watery one.
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 5 месяцев назад
I only went once at age 16 (so far) but I love Thailand. I just have 3 pieces of aromatic cedar in the cabin which is mostly just for a touch of good looks. Also 1 piece of pretty oiled pine. But other than that I try not to have wood in the boat. Good luck on your build.@@rebuildingnoseas
@locutus8496
@locutus8496 5 месяцев назад
Is that red oak or white oak? Red oak sucks up water into the grain by capillary action, whereas white oak resists such absorption. Which is why white oak is used in boat building but red oak is not. If you're using red oak you may regret it later, especially using it on the exterior.
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 5 месяцев назад
Yes it's white oak I bought for my keel supports. Expensive stuff so I made sure to research it first.

They are very low mate u could do with being higher
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat
@ocean_capable_small_sailboat 4 месяца назад
They're a bit higher than the standard handrails. Back aft they need to be low enough for the tiller to be over them. If conditions are rough I'll be inside anyway, the boat is operable from the main hatch or inside.
