On an August day in 1921, roly-poly rapidly rising Hollywood star Fatty Arbuckle, is convinced by a friend he needs to let his hair down.
They travel to San Francisco by car after having booked three rooms at the St. Francis hotel - it was prohibition but fatty knew all the right people and getting bootleg booze…and plenty of it, was no problem.
There was no holding back and Fatty and the other guests drink themselves silly in a very short time, including up-and-coming starlet Virginia Rappe.
Virginia performs her usual party trick of stripping off - soon after she excuses herself and complains of feeling ill. She retires to Fatty’s suite to recover, and shortly afterwards Fatty also enters the suite. What happens next is now legend.
Join me on this journey back in time, to a fledgling Hollywood where anything went…until you got involved in a scandal.
After the presentation I discuss the relative points of the case, and share with you some hitherto unknown details which I have discovered during a microfiche search.

He did contribute to her death though by not getting aid to her, he could have had her taken to the hospital sooner or got a doctor to her sooner.

Regardless of what her lifestyle was, she didn't deserve to die the way she did in pain and who is to say Fatty who was also drunk didn't try to do anything to her and by the way, nobody is getting a pass including her friend who was the sneaky little snake in the grass who brought her to the party knowing she'd get smashed and knowing the guys would take advantage of that.

@@pyewackett1969 DMSO is used to treat IC. So, maybe MSM would also help...? (MSM is derived from DMSO & much easier to get.) I tend to agree with your assessment of what happened. Roscoe was railroaded by Maude, WR Hearst & corrupt prosecutors. That said, his “cancellation” was a response to the exposure of the film industry’s none-to wholesome off screen culture. He was the scapegoat for the whole rotten town.

I remember my mum telling me the fatty Arbuckle story in the early 60s, very sad and it probably wasn’t his fault, thanks for this it’s the same as what my mum told me .

My Pa was performing an impersonation of Charlie Chaplin at that World Fair, and Charlie Chaplin and Fatty Arbuckle were in the audience, laughing at him. Poor Fatty. I always thought he was innocent.

In regards to the alcohol toxicity, during the Probation era, there were two notable issues that could cause poisoning. First, the federal government made sure that all industrial grade alcohol contained methanol so that, once ingested would cause sever and often fatal poisoning. Large shipments of industrial grade alcohol had been stolen and this was the governments remedy to stop the illicit practice of drinking industrial alcohol. Thousands died from this alone. The second issue arose from manufacturing 'bathtub gin', a practice that at time that could utilized galvanized steel which contains lead that can leach into the alcohol when heated. Home made liquor, also when poorly done, contains a number of poisonous chemicals that typically are removed during production in the 'heads' and 'tails' cuts of the alcohol such as acetate and ethanol, chemicals found in finger nail polish remover and anti-freeze. An ignorant distiller, or one that simply doesn't remove these cuts to increase volume and sales, might leave these in his alcohol. Street booze was a dangerous thing during the 1920s, rather like street drugs today. You never know if you are getting a good batch or one laced with methanol or toxins.

I got to see Arbuckle's Pierce-Arrow at a museum in Los Angeles. An absolutely magnificent car. Built-in ice well. That inspired me to read 'I, Fatty'. What a heartbreaking life story. Job well done on this banger!

I totally agree that he was innocent. She had chronic bladder issues and her over drinking sounds like alcohol poisoning. The guy had a crappy childhood and as an adult wanted to be respected but really wasn't. For him being charged for her death is like icing on the poisonous cake. Great video!! I'm sure that tunnel was for smuggling booze. If you have the money, you can get away with stuff like building tunnels. My step mom had an illegal underground wine cellar built under her and my dad's home in Carmel, CA that the builder managed to hide from inspection. They couldn't get approval for it, but she had it built anyway. There's a story about the ghost of a young lady killed during a booze run at Moss Beach, CA, when the prohibition was in effect. She is said to haunt the beach and the Moss Beach Distillery.

I personally feel Virginia Rappe had been suffering from Chronic Cystitis for quite sometime and her life was coming to an end due to all the neglect of this condition and consumption of alcohol, Fatty was basically at the wrong place at the wrong time and it proved fatal for her life and fatal for his career. Alcohol consumption makes the bladder swell and the urine becomes more acidic. it's called "Painful bladder syndrome", people with this condition get mild to severe pain, so imagine adding alcohol to the situation, ..that's asking for trouble!..I feel bad for Fatty, but also for the pain that poor woman must of endured just by having the condition, let alone her party lifestyle making it worse. >>>> PLUS the possibility of a botched abortion......👉you make a good point Oddie 👍As for this "Tunnel" they discovered, I think Prohibition had everything to do with that., people used to modify their homes in any way possible, from tunnels to secret passages to secret party rooms...🙄😳

Yeah, Oddy. My mother had a copy of Anger's "Hollywood Babylon." Holy smokes! This was, like, in the 70's or 80's when that book came out complete with lots of photos. It was mesmerizing reading. Arbuckle got a bad rap. His silent comedy films are precious unto all humanity. Slapstick transcends all cultures. It's zany and requires very unique, athletic actors. He was so marvelous.

It certainly was mesmerising, especially as an impressionable child - I never forgot that book. I do remember, if my memory serves me correctly that is - a passage about Fatty being stopped by police years later, and they had witnessed him throwing a bottle out of the car window. The police said he was clearly drunk and then when they asked him what he had done with the bottle - he said he “got rid of the evidence” and then apparently laughed hysterically - Anger, no doubt alluding to the champagne bottle rumour.

Very interesting story Oddie thanks for sharing. Poor guy must have suffered with a terrible complex with having a terrible upbringing. What he must have gone through is astonishing. So sad that he lost everything 😢 and when he was about to come back he suffers a heart attack in his sleep. Don't think he had anything to do with Virginia's death, old injuries she had got worse and sepsis set in. Thanks again. 👍👍👍

According to Gloria Swasons autobiography he was a good guy and was willing to help anyone and her reputation didn’t help matters, a so called madam said awful things about him and his career was over and after a while he was found innocent and then had a movie role and had a heart attack and died 😢 besides if you look at the madam testimony you would find a lot of things wrong with it perjury would be slapped on her but back then the more wild the more believe able

Wow. Another great story👏 I think he was innocent about it. They clearly tried to trap him so they can get money off him. But it went wrong since she got the injury somewhere else. During prohibition the production of illegal alcohol was an issue and since people were wanting the drink, they were consuming anything they can get their hands on, I do believe alcohol poisoning was also involved.

It sounds to me as though Virginia may have been experiencing delirium when she accused Arbuckle. In her confused state of mind, she was absolutely convinced he had done something to her. I once confronted someone over a lucid dream I had (shortly after experiencing retrograde amnesia following a medication overdose). To me, something terrible HAD happened- and the person was stunned. In my mind, it was real- because my brain wasn't working properly. I think it was the same for Virginia, whose brain was already being affected by sepsis.

Bad enough sepsis can do a number on you. I was getting hospitalized for sepsis and was convinced I was still living in Chicago (actually live in Albuqerque), and I was in my 20s (add about 30 years to that). It wasn't until the antibiotics started kicking in hard that I got coherent again.

Another very interesting video Oddy. I had heard bits and pieces of the Fatty Arbuckle story all my life. Now in almost documentary style, you have brought it all together in a very watchable format. The saddest truth from all these types of stories is human nature to immediately want to believe the worst, independent of facts or other pertinent data. I do feel for both Virginia and Fatty. Maybe a bit more so for Fatty because as you mentioned, if Virginia had been having issues for some time specifically when consuming alcohol then she really should have been smarter and avoided it. I suffer abdominal issues myself, and when I cone across something that triggers intestinal revolt I put it on the "never again" list. Curious as to why she continued 🤔 Still a tormented end for her, and poor Fatty was a victim of "Wrong place at the wrong time" which cost him everything. No winners in this sad tale. Thank you for sharing the story with us!

This is a great piece and video Oddie. I always heard stories about this scandal and how Fatty Arbuckle’s reputation and career was destroyed by these false accusations. I’m reading a book right now on this scandal.The title is Room {1219} The Life of Fatty Arbuckle, The Mysterious Death of Virginia Rappe, and The Sandal That Changed Hollywood by Greg Merritt. Tearing of the clothing, while in great pain may be more common than we realize. I remember seeing an episode of the TV series, Naked and Afraid where one of the female participates ate some poisonous fruit, and she and others had severe stomach pains from the poison, and the young lady began to frantically tear at her clothes as well as remove her clothes. The producers had to intervene and get her medical attention.

If compared to Abortions of today , the abortions of yesteryear were not much more than back alley butcher jobs . Also they had no CT Scans nor did they have MRIs . Viginia Rappe brings her own questionable history of ethics & morality into this tragic event .. BTW , I have been reading analysis of this event for almost 60 years and this one of yours was by far the most detailed and interesting play by play description of it so far .. Three trials , and they still can.t convict . To say the DA didn't prove beyond-a-reasonable-doubt in this case is an epic understatement . I speculate that Mr. Arbuckle had made a few enemies in high places in the Hollywood elite . And the elites owned & ran Hollywood the way they wanted . Meaning this was an ideal time to strike , and strike they did . You Duh Man Oddy !!!

Another stellar video, thank you Oddy. Extremely well presented with no taint of the usual indignant hysteria re: Rappe’s “innocence”. By many a contemporaries’ account she was definitely a party girl & had had two known abortions before the Arbuckle incident. I’m inclined to agree that Roscoe didn’t r@pe her, but there may have been some drunken hanky-panky 4 play that set off that injury in the making due to congenital bladder trouble combined with a botched abortion. Such a sad case for all involved. In those days the public was far more inclined to believe anything printed as gospel truth.

It’s possible that when her bladder erupted toxins went into her body and caused her to see things and perceive things that were not actually happening and she had drunk on top of that. I’m not saying he’s innocent but it’s possible she really believed in her mind, he hurt her, he may have just picked her up and put her on the bed.

Recently found tunnels from tunnels from the home of the Playboy mansion and other homes like Puff Daddy’s house, a house formerly owned by Jack Nicholson and others. It’s quite amazing these tunnels still exist connected to various homes. The dark side of Hollywood has just started to be unlock. The absolute control, studio heads had over their “stars” is abhorrent.

Homo abortions killed a few, back in those days . My grandma lost her mom when she was 7 or 8 years old. She got an infection and died. Leaving 3 kids, one still being an infant. Sad reality of the time. Thank you, very much enjoyed.

I love this one. I too as a teen read and got hooked on Hollywood Babylon 1&2. Since then my favorite entertainment stories are those from old Hollywood. I was disappointed when I heard a lot of the stories were exaggerated or just untrue. However that hasn't dampened my intense interest in old time Hollywood stories and scandals. Idt Arbuckle did anything wrong. Chronic or honeymoon cystitis is (bladder infection) caused from increased frequency of sexual activity, bacterial contamination, rough intercourse, drinking alcohol with an active infection brewing, and botched abortion are a perfect storm for peritonitis and septicemia. Taking her clothes off while drinking sounds like drinking to much or contaminated alcohol. I heard that bootleg alcohol had chemicals added. Sorry for the long post.

I think the tunnel was to get direct access to the beach. Long Beach has a pretty high slope down to the beach from that location. The booze was likely moved from the beach through the tunnel so they didn’t have to scale that slope up and down. When I was little, the tunnel was open and used to go to the beach from the Ocean Blvd. bus stop 😂. All very normal. 😁. The tunnel has since been. Gated at each end and locked up because of drug deals. It is made of concrete sides.

My thought is that he was completely innocent. I feel that Virginia had an allergy to alcohol, which can cause itchy skin. I also feel that she did have an illegal abortion that contributed to the pain.

I had already heard the salacious side of the story until a few years ago, and I was able to better suss it out. The one thing that made me mean more in Roscoe’s favor was the extent and joy the Hearst press got out of this tragedy. I despise that man.

I've been fascinated by this case for years. What struck me the most was the autopsy that revealed no damage had been done to Rappe's genitalia and this is quite enlightening. As to whether Roscoe tried to abuse her, well, we'll never know. But many people present said and testified that he tried to help Rappe. Of course he would even if he had hurt her, to keep appearances. It seems to me that the only person who was saying Roscoe was guilty was that agent lady, who it turns out was known to extort stars, whereas everybody else was saying he didn't do anything. Also, him falling into alcoholism tells me that he was really devastated with all that and a person who wasn't guilty would just boast that he'd gotten away with it and would've moved on. Sure, Hollywood was very harsh on him, but still, I don't believe a guilty person would fall into that state he was in in those later years. The whole thing is very disturbing and I hope both Roscoe and Rappe have found some peace wherever they are or karma, if they indeed deserve it.

My guess is that she had Celiac Disease and was very sensitive to alcohol. Further, you simply didn't know what kinds of nasty chemicals alcohol might have in it during that time period.
