Liane de Pougy (maiden name: Anne-Marie Chassaigne)
Born in 1869 and died in 1950
Liane lived an amazing adventure of a life - she danced through the Belle Époque and made her fortune - ending the graceful curve by finding salvation in a Swiss convent...though doing it comfortably with a special dispensation to live in a suite at the Carlton Hotel in Switzerland.
She died there in elegant comfort aged 81.
(One of my members here who is fluent in French, made quite a few corrections to my pronunciation and the meanings behind certain terms - that’s no surprise when it comes to me and the French language 😂 One important correction was the age that Liane got married, it was not 10 but 17. It was written so strangely that it confused me)
Oddie Beau's ODDNESS Urban exploration & famous historical features! vintage crime cases & eccentric people from the past! ...and other weird stuff :) ....a dusty store window, filled with ancient alluring oddities. Once you've entered, you'll never want to leave. Quality over quantity.

Oh Oddie, another great one! These ladies deserve all the credit. And nobody does them better than you! Almost reminds me of my own mother, thankfully not the horrible upbringing, and trauma, but she was the black sheep of her family. Left to raise 2 small children when her first husband died. She put herself through beauty school, raised 3 more kids, had one bad marriage and finally a good one. In the 40s and 50s it was still tough in its own way. Storm is rolling in now and I see the lightning 🌩. Should be able to sleep now. Thanks again for a wonderful story!

I’m very happy you enjoyed it Jackie, thank you so much. It’s quite often the black sheep of the family who has the strongest willpower - I’m happy to hear that your mother never faulted in her stride, it was definitely tough back then.

Good morning Oddie, such a pleasure to see a post from you. Her upbringing was terribly sad, without parents. She was taught to be a Lady, but to Marry at 10 years of age??? To be assaulted so young is unimaginable to me. I have great empathy for her awful marriage. So glad she divorced that man. It is not surprising her motto was "Enjoy or Parish". That was her key to survival. Liane de Pougy, with her upbringing, experiences really had no other choice. Women were objects for men's enjoyment and use. She became a celebrity, from beaty, intelligence, and business sense. Good for her. She had no other way, did she not? She used men's desires, and customs of that time, to enrich herself. She did find satisfaction from giving and raising funds for unfortunate women. There is a wonderful feeling when one helps others. She passed away in 1950, the year I was born. Thank you Oddie. Regards to Audette.

I enjoy hearing of the lives of those famous in their own time but lost to posterity. Today we have more than we could possibly count, considering how wide the pool of "celebrity" has become. Back then, without pr firms and world wide media you had to be GOOD at what you did, even if it wasn't something we'd all aspire to becoming 😮 I'm sure Liane had that certain something that put her at the top. Maybe women even prettier and just as ambitious failed at becoming wealthy courtesans because they didn't have that certain something that captivated rich men, even compelling them to plunk a small fortune on their bums! Love your work, Oddie. You make all your subjects so interesting.

(subtitles in all major languages!! - If you'd like me to add one, just ask me) Although the many virtues that courtesans possessed were employed to defy circumstances, the role they played depended on the same circumstances over which they triumphed- conditions which to, fortunately for modern women, no longer exist. Dear Narrator, by coincidence I just recently finished reading Pougy's autobiography "Mes Cahiers Bleus". There are details in your source which are lacking in her diaries, which is natural coming from another objective, adding an extra dimension to her own records. Your presentation would be an excellent jumping off point should anyone wish to pursue this subject and actually experience her life through her eyes. Her interactions with so many of the well-known members of the artistic and upper echelon circles of French society of the period reads like a "Whose Who" of that most fascinating and creative era of French culture. Your thorough research and presentation are, as always, exemplary and most appreciated, another job well-done! Kudos!

Speaking of translations, RU-vid sometimes decides to translate video titles in Italian (my native language), even though I have my account set on English. It doesn't happen frequently, but when it does it's always amusing: this time it decides to translate "tart with a heart" to the Italian for "pie with a sweet filling"

Thank you for this wonderful and interesting episode. I wonder at the power of legendary beauty such as hers, Helen of Troy, Cleopatra, and others. I imagine it's as much to do with bearing, and confidence in addition to physical attributes and historical timing. By that I mean, what is admired in one era may be considered unappealing in another. She certainly used her gifts to make the best of a bad situation, didn't she? I can't fault her for that. I wonder where all her fortune - jewels, mansions, money, etc. went, or were they mostly liquidated for her care, and for charity, prior to her death? We'll probably never know.

IF i didnt know Mr.Oddity that this story was true,i would have to think of it as a romance novel. She used her brains for survival and her good life at the end. It is sad that people shun such a person like her without knowing why she is doing this. She overcame all blocks in her life.I honor her.

It does indeed read like a romance novel. She most certainly had willpower and drive!

It's very well read, despite some of those bodacious French names! ❤

Oddie Beau, beautiful and interesting story. For your sake perhaps an English spoken/written presentation. Be kind to yourself 😊 Thank you

Very glad you enjoyed it, Martha-Ann! Well I always believe one should keep testing ones self, otherwise one would be stuck in a rut! On a serious note though, I’d like to think my French has improved since this presentation two years ago, although I’m not absolutely sure 😄🤣

Many of us fall off the path, but the ones that at the core are pretty good, somehow get back on. She was still a princess and a Third Order not a nun but a lay sister; so, a hotel vs a palace was not that bad. All Saints have a past all sinners have a chance, she took it. Good for her.

Well to be correct, she was a princess by marriage not by birth. But absolutely, she found a worthy cause and showed the real kindness of her soul by helping those less fortunate.

These were girl schools not just damp prisons. Not sure what's worse in people's minds but my great grandma was twelve when she was married off. Also, my grandma, being born in 1904, told me they were never told about all things uterine. She never told my mom, either, who thought she was dying when she came of age. She made darn sure I knew. A third order Dominican is someone who doesn't enter a convent but lives in the world while following a religious rule. There are many people who still do this under various rules.

Convents in early modern Europe (1500-1800) absorbed many unmarried and disabled women as nuns.[1] France deemed convents as an alternative to prisons for unmarried or rebellious women and children.[2] It was also where young girls were educated as they waited to be married. Conditions in many French convents were quite primitive until the middle of the 20th century.

I must be the only person who thinks this woman is awful 😮 she left her child behind because miney was more important and she comes across as very manipulative since she wpuld take poison when a man was unfaithful but not enough to actually be successful, she sounds like a very dangerous woman imo
