Yeah I'm pretty disappointed that the Miis aren't the main focus, I would be a lot more excited for Switch Sports if everyone was Miis. But I'm still open to learning to love the sportsmates, I'm glad they have such detailed animations. I definitely hope this isn't the end for the Miis, I love those little guys. Great vid!
Well if Nintendo is ever going to make new avatars they should at least make them more anime like with the help of one of their studios like Intelligent who makes Fire Emblem games or that other studio who develops Xenoblade games.
I didn't like the sportmates and here's why. 1: There character designs are to generic. 2: You can only customize their hair and their clothing which is just insult to injury since with Miis, you move their eyes, mouth, noses and more! Making The Miis character designs look rather unique and special. Wish we could have old nintendo back when they cared for their consumers and also cared about Miis. :(
Generic is a bit harsh they have some uniqueness to them probably because when the Wii U and stuff had those things people Called it childish so they wanted to avoid that with the switch
I think a quote from the Peanuts musical, You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown describes those… things quite well. “This is what you call a Failure Face. Notice how it has failure written all over it. Study it carefully. You rarely see such a good example. Notice the deep lines, the dull, vacant look in the eyes. Yes, I would say that this is one of the finest examples of a Failure Face you’re liable to see for a long while.” Those things are Failure Faces indeed.
One minute they're promoting the heck out of Miitopia as if it was a new game that never existed on the 3DS then the next they're seemingly pushing Miis to the side. I'm confused lol
For me it's not the fact that they're better, it's because the mii's art style gives perfectly to just about anybody you could make. It could be your 10-year-old little sister or brother, could be your uncle who's around 50 years old, or it could be you right in the middle being at 30 like I am. The thing is, the art style is so simple just about anybody can be made, and still look good. You pointed towards that one sports mate with the beard and it perfectly encapsulates my problem. That beard looks so weird on a cutesy character like that, that it honestly looks even more dated than the miis themselves. There's a reason why people love using these little guys in smash Bros ultimate, or even back on the original hardware it originated from. It's because people love the art style, they love the range of character creation, and it's a staple of an era where people were getting into avatars more than ever, but Nintendo's were just that much more personal. I just feel like the sports mates aren't a good replacement. They still look like they belong in ninjala, and it's just kind of weird to look at. Hopefully these guys aren't here to stay. ---- By the way, crack the smile when you kind of jokingly went off on the looks in the first section of the video, it made me crack up and smile. You're genuinely becoming one of my favorite RU-vidrs. Please keep up the good work!
Sportsmates have the faces of Animal Crossing characters but have human proportions. It's not uncanny but ever so slightly weird. I don't hate them, they just seem so...confusingly unnecessary when Miis are already perfect.
Talking Sock is back at again with a certified classic! Nintendo really should normalize Miis because the new avatars look like a rip off of the Xbox Avatar.
As someone who grew up in the Wii/Wii U era, I’ve obviously grown up with the Miis, and although it hurts seeing them sidelined for the Sportsmates, they’re still usable. And I’ve taken a liking to the Sportsmates because they’re more expressive than the Miis, who are basically locked in a set number of expressions. So answer me this… *Who says we can’t like both?*
From the future. We did get a new FZero. Its a battle royale based in the SNES game. But hey, at leaat WW3 hasn't happened yet. Also I have the exact same kind of aunt as the one in this skit here. So despite the severe lack of lore in Switch Sports, you did get the real life lore down pat.
I hate the sports mates so much, they really could've just update the miis instead of trying to replace them with the most generic avatars that you can hardly even customize.😡😡😡
I think my problem with them is that, yeah, I actually made a small dozen or so Mii's on the Wii, and I participated in some of the Mii channel shenanigans like downloading, uploading, etc... but I don't think I've ever cared much for the Miis. Their customization is -great-, though I've never played a game with a focus on mii's like Miitopia or Tomodachi Life. Even the Mii Fighters were forgettable enough for me that I had to be reminded they existed every time a Nintendo Direct came along and showed off Mii Fighter Costumes. That said, it's not like Sportsmates are in a better position for me after the fact. Both avatars have a very neutral feel of "Sure, I'll use this." And I know it's a minority opinion, but that about sums it up. I'm disappointed to hear Sportsmates have poor customization, but if both Mii's and Sportsmates disappeared one day silently I think I honestly wouldn't notice, which is a bit disappointing because the former are definitely a popular, endearing feature.
We're somewhat in the same camp. As I say a couple times in the video, I wouldn't mind the sidelining of Miis at all if I didn't find the Sportsmates so blah. And tbh, I'd love to see a new line of characters in a Nintendo Land sequel replace Miis like robots or something that'd be neat.
@@ATalkingSock Oh man, I didn't see the reply notification. Robots might be pretty neat, maybe we can mess with the polygonal shape and limbs now. Tank tread legs? I certainly don't have any better ideas. ... Nintendo Land Sequel when? I'd also shoutout to Wii Play's Tanks.
Although I much prefer Miis I wouldn’t absolutely hate the Sportsmates if it wasn’t for the off-putting stuff like beards and chipmunk suits. Their base designs are boring and unoriginal for sure but they’re not particularly offensive in my opinion. Loved the video Sock!
Miis were never all that important to me, but they were still way less generic than the new avatars. I think they probably included them to accommodate for more varied and complex animations and expressions
for me miis were just a thing i played around with for an afternoon when i wasnt playing Twilight Princess. i was never a big fan of them and didnt really appreciate them showing up in smash either. that said it is disappointing to see how bad the replacement for them look, but its not unexpected. it seems like nintendo has forgone the classic nintendo way of doing things differently and are just trying to mimic other "blue ocean" game companies in the mechanics and design philosophies of their games as well as now with aesthetics as seen with these monstrosities.
I think the problem lies more in Nintendo moving AWAY from blue ocean tbh. Every company and their grandmas have characters like these Sportsmates in their multiplayer games, they're very un-nintendo feeling specifically BECAUSE they don't have much to em. I get what you mean though.
Sad that the Miis are just a second thought for Nintendo, I get it that it isn't as important as before but taking them out of stuff deliberately is annoying
It's very weird that they're both trying to capitalize on Wii nostalgia by making Switch Sports while simultaneously distancing themselves from it by taking Miis out of the marketing...
I really hope that in later adaptations if they don't make Miis the central focus, they at least redesign the new avatars to be more distinct and customizable. Even Go Vacation, which lacks a lot of much needed character customization at least makes their avatars distinct and appealing. But even those standards wouldn't be enough for a first party sports game to succeed a franchise focused on something like the Miis, so what excuse do they have with these bland recyclable shells of characters to take their place?
Yeah I wish Nintendo would do something like that with help from one of the studios they owned like Intelligent who develops Fire Emblem games or that other studio I can't remember the name but they developed the Xenoblade games. Something similar to what Microsoft did to make their own avatars with the help from one of their own studios Rare.
@@edmartinez925 Agreed. It's just too bad the state of their sports and party games have gotten worse over time which each Mario sports game being worse than the last on the Switch and Switch Sports not being much better. I made a poor decision to buy the new Mario Strikers game and because of that, I will not buy another one of those games until they get their act together!
Nintendo: "Here's a single game where we have an additional kind of player avatar besides Miis for more variety, but you can also use still Miis if you'd like. We'll even use them for our Execs in a fun demonstration in our direct!" The internet: "**PANIC!!!!!!** NINTENDO ARE GETTING RID OF MIIS!!! IT'S A COVER-UP! NINTENDO HATES MIIS!!!!!! NEXT CONSOLE WON'T HAVE MIIS!!!!!" I feel like everyone's skipped a few steps in this theory. There's zero evidence Nintendo is reducing or getting rid of miis, especially since they're...you know, still in the game? I see this as just them trying something new and seeing if it sticks. And Miitopia and Mario Gold Super Rush didn't come out THAT long ago, either, so even the idea that Nintendo is reducing how they use Miis kinda baffles me. They weren't the focus of a single trailer, and one port removes the feature probably for no reason other than Nintendo being bad at emulation and integrating present day miis into a wii game, and suddenly it's mii judgement day.
@@ATalkingSock I watched the video beforehand, and I stand by my comment. Though I didn't really mean ~you~ specifically (although I do think this video is somewhat alarmist and over-reactionary in response to a pretty nothing topic regarding Miis while there's very little tenuous evidence that Miis are going anywhere), I just meant "the internet" in general.
Hopefully there will be some backlash when the game comes out that will have them rethink on using miis more, but this is Nintendo we are talking about. Also is it just me or are these kinda the same as the design for ninjala?
The sportsmates are that bad like even with everything you say idk y y'all don't like them you never know maybe they will add height more eyes mouth, hair, and even different type ears, head size n more n'd I hope they do
