We finalize the framing of the first floor by framing the gable end walls.
We are building an off grid wilderness cabin in the wild of the North Maine Woods. We are fighting the weather, trying to stay ahead of snowfall, and battling all of the challenges that building a cabin and especially an off grid no power or electric build can bring.
We will bring you a step by step of the process video series along with a finale including everything. If you subscribe you won't miss an episode.

That moose moment must must have made it all worth it... Awesome 👌 I don't know if you Archery hunt but that is how we have been doing it the last few years... burnt the first tag years ago but have now figured it out. September 23 this year was our best.... 18 minutes opening day after legal time, Bull down. Cheers boys, great series!

I remember a couple of moose grunting in the middle of the night back in 1972 in remote Alaska, and then what sounded like the entire forest was being broken and smashed and destroyed by those unseen giants of the forest fighting (or doing what moose do). In the morning I found where these behemoths fought, and it was frightening to see the damage these two had inflicted on the woods. I still have a sandwich bag with some of the hair I collected, it looked more like porcupine barbs than hair. To this day, when I suspect a moose in the vicinity (albeit rare in the mountains of Palm Springs), I give it all the room in the world.

A little late now but when building walls you should snap a line the width of bottom stud from edge. Toe nail bottom stud online with few nails not completely in. This way you stand wall up and it's in position. We would frame and sheath walls this way in Mass(making sure wall is square) so you just stand them up and nails(6 or 8 penny) would just pull out. No positioning, just nail it where it stands as it is on the line and level as it is level as long as it was squared. Without sheathing it you don't need to square it. With sheathing you just leave the sheathing hanging low the height of the bottom sill. You just leave the ends off to nail on later to cover the doublers. Not sure if you are using sheathing but just thought I would add how we did it back in the day

I remember seeing moose in Maine. One night I saw one off the side of road, pulled off and shined my lights at one and was surprised with how massive it was. About a month later I came upon a single car accident sitting in middle of road. I was thinking wtf happened here? Then upon getting to car I knew, it had hit a moose. It was the most gruesome thing I have ever seen in my life. The moose came over the hood with hardly any damage to front but the roof was peeled back and 2 front seat folks were dead with driver decapitated A person in rear was still alive barely. I did what I could which wasn't much and it seemed like forever till another car came along. That car raced off to get help but it had to be almost a half hour till help had come and the rear seater also expired. The thing was the moose was no where to found but the hair told the story. I don't think they knew what hit them as there was no skid marks at all. I was a mess, didn't sleep for days and was useless barely even eating. That was some 30 odd years and I still get queasy thinking about it.

A good habit to get into mail the bottom of your studs first. It keeps your hands away from getting shot with a nail. I learned the hard way once. Lol

I am curious as to why you did not use a vapor barrier BEFORE placing the insulation between the floor boards. Since I see it rains a considerable amount on your series, I would think it might have been a good choice to minimize moisture rising up into the cabin thereby decreasing winter cold and increasing summer humidity within the cabin. Just wondering what you thoughts were for not doing this. Especially since you mentioned you may not put any other flirting in other than keep the subfloor. Thanks.
@JoeHollandFishing
@JoeHollandFishing 9 месяцев назад
That’s a good point I’ll ask Donnie . We get all seasons here and usually not a lot of rain like this year . I think a vapor barrier is a good idea most times . The sun flooring is super tight and glued and nailed down tightly so no air can come up through at all and there is also an air space between the sun floor and the insulation
