One thing in particular about the rock form is that the signature move, Ivy Cudgel, is a 100% Accuracy move, making it one of the few RELIABLE, physical rock type attacks to use without having a chance to miss.
Something nice about Ogerpon is that it has high Physical Attack and Speed, which makes it so that you don't have to grind to get the right IVs for something like Trick Room. I swear, there will be world peace in VGC once we get a Reverse Bottle Cap.
It's really nice to have a cute legendary that isn't directly inspired by mew! And especially one that also has a really cool design when it uses its masks, game freak knocked it out of the park with the visual design
@@ultimapower6950We can probably make a guess. There's a real life Kitakami in Iwate, which a prefecture near the north tip of Honshu (the big island). That's just south of Hokkaido, the island Sinnoh is based on. It would make sense for Ursaluna to be able to make that swim.
I want to spread the word about rock ivy cudgel everywhere. It's a 100% accurate stone edge on a Pokémon as fast as Lycanroc. Take this information as you will
Fun fact: Is one of the few Legendary Pokémon that is not genderless, in this case it has a gender ratio of 0% Male, 100% Female; according to the pokédex.
Ou mean the fourth mask, being standard and actually only used in its Tera form? Well, that would have been the most broken of all of them. Fairy grass is just too good offensively.
It's diamond storm all over again lmao, like we finally got a good rock move only for it to be relegated to one Pokémon And even then that move wasn't perfect accuracy, 95 is great for rock standards but this is just so much better
I had a little giggle when I brought Hearth Ogerpon out-of-the-box to the Carmine fight after you catch it and her Sinistcha has an Occa Berry to try and punish you for exactly that, but Ivy Cudgel is so cracked it one-shots anyway.
something crazy about Ogerpon is that it has a 1.2x boost to ALL of it's moves. so yes, this is a 120atk mon that has a 216BP Wood Hammer, 180BP Ivy Cudgel and a 78BP Knock Off
Did Knock Off get buffed? iirc it's only 60 power, so 20% bonus would be 72? (for the bonus to be 78BP it would have to be starting at 65) (not trying to "Uhm Akshyually" you, i just don't know if the move got changed or if im remembering the power wrong)
@@SnoFitzroy As others have said, it's 65BP because there's no way in hell they were gonna let Technician Pokemon run around with what amounts to a base 90 move before it boosts from knocking an item off.
The rock form is actually insane in 1v1, might be the first sturdy to get banned, with access to counter, leech seed, many strong attacks, taunt, speed control in trailblaze and rock tomb, and of course Encore makes it incredibly hard to deal with
@@nise6699 No, but it might be. With Leech Seed, Synthesis and Horn Leech, it can get its built-in Focus Sash back with relative ease. Also, Rock/Grass is a surprisingly good defensive and offensive type combo - they cover each other's weaknesses well. Rock turns Grass' weaknesses to Fire, Poison and Flying to neutral, while Grass turns Rock's weaknesses to Water, Grass and Ground to neutral. This makes it only weak to Fighting, Ice and Steel. And it has access to Superpower to deal with Steel and Ice types and Play Rough or Zen Headbutt for Fighting types. In fact, the Rock form might be the only one of Ogerpon's forms to not truly benefit from Tera, since Rock by itself is such a horrible defensive type.
I always found it funny how Grass and Rock are the two types with the most weaknesses (5) but if you combine them, they compliment each other so well, they have 4 weaknesses but two of them (Ice, Bug) are weak to one of the types with STAB.
That's a fair point, I was under the assumption that no one would hit a grass/water type with water anyway, but strategically it makes sense to mess with stats
Incidentally, the Cornerstone Mask forme's Ivy Cudgel is actually the best Rock-type attack in the game - it's got the same BP as Stone Edge, but with more PP and 100 accuracy! Sadly, Water Absorb on the Wellspring Mask form feels kind of wasted - it's already 4x resistant to Water. I doubt a Choice-Specs Kyogre Water Spout under rain could 1-shot Wellspring Mask Ogrepon even without the ability.
As someone else already pointed out in another comment thread, Water Absorb does have the tiny utility of blocking Scald. Since Ogerpon is a physical attacker regardless of its form, it could be very situationally useful, but it's still overall the weakest of the 4 abilities.
Water absorb still heals for 25 % of max hp , so its better than being an immunity anyways . Its mostly usefull in doubles with moves like surf that hit both opponents and will proc the healing
water absorb could be useful in doubles just for the healing potential w teammate's surf as wolfe glick pointed out in a recent video, otherwise it is pretty odd as an ability for the water form
Ogerpon became my new favorite legendary by being extremely adorable so I'm glad that its also the only offensive Pokémon that can actually reliably use Sturdy at a high level
A nice thing about water absorb is it does come with helping hand. Can always pull the old helping hand surf strat to spread damage and heal ogrepon in one go. Not sure how relevant that is nowadays but it's certainly a thing that exists
the 20% boost is something i genuinely didn't know about and might actually end up being kind of a big deal, since a big reason people doubted this mon was that they thought the three other forms being unable to hold alternative items was too big of a downside. but if the 20% boost applies to ANY kind of attack you use, that's basically like having a muscle band but twice as good, or an expert belt but no longer matchup dependent.
When I first saw this mon in the first teal mask trailer, I know it has some hiding behind the mask design and was imagining how it actually looks under the mask (+ the concept of a shy pokemon wanting to hide behind a mask is already giving it so much points imo). Looking at how cute it actually is behind the mask, plus having an array of really cool and unique masks (which I wasn't expecting) makes this pokemon really climbs the ranks of my favorite mons ever. I'm just happy to see it being really good competitively too on top of that (nor that it's a minus if it wasn't)
Another banger video. The editing is impeccable, and the way you present the information in a concise manner is great when so many other channels take too long to get to the point. I also love how you are now covering both singles and doubles in your videos. Keep it up mate. P.S. I wonder how hard this pokemon is going to fall off in gen 10 when Terastalization no longer exists? lol
If not already mentioned it’s been shown that the masks provide a flat 20% damage boost to all moves when held, so stuff like hearth flame gets a small life orb alongside intrepid sword
Thank god these mons are more or less balanced unlike Miraidon, Calyrex, and Zacian. Their speed is good but not crazy and their attack is the same, but they’re still pretty strong.
As someone who got Pokemon Violet on release and got burnt out months ago it's great to see your videos to catch up on the new updates and potential strategies. Ogerpon looks super fun to use. I recently got into pokemon infinite fusion and it's totally revived my interest in playing mons. I'd enjoy seeing you stream that sometime if you're interested. As always im very grateful for the content!
if you ever get back into SV, I'd recommend getting the dlc, teal mask was really fun, and from what I understand Indigo Disk is going to be way better
Not sure if this was said but Ogerpon learns moves that boost the type for each mask which is sunny day sand storm rain and grassy terrain edit: they are all Tms ogerpon learns
I'm running a bulky support/damage Ogerpon for VGC and the thing to note is that it COMPLETELY INVALIDATES opposing rain teams. Pokemon like Basculegion, Ludicolo, and even Urshifu have an incredibly difficult time dealing with Horn Leech + Knock Off (I'm running ivy cudgel instead but seriously considering knock off). Ogerpon-Wellspring (F) @ Wellspring Mask Ability: Water Absorb Level: 50 Tera Type: Water EVs: 188 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def / 60 SpD (or: 188 HP / 252 Atk / 48 Def / 16 SpD) Adamant Nature - Follow Me - Ivy Cudgel - Horn Leech/Knock Off - Spiky Shield You can choose EVs based on physical/special needs. This set actually just destroys people lmao
Ogrepon is a brilliantly designed Pokemon from a visual and a gameplay perspective. I love the depth that it has with its various forms and none of them seem too strong or weak, plus the design is cute so that's an added bonus.
Ogerpon-Wellspring I think you honestly underrated, primarily because it causes no end of problems for Urshifu-Rapid, one of the most dangerous Pokemon in the format.
Such a good wall breaker in singles, but still balanced because of her not having a very good speed boosting option. You'd probably want to go for Hearthflame Mask in most instances for its raw power, as well as it getting Mold Breaker to beat Unaware mons and Heatran. This paired with Swords Dance, and good typing against a lot of stall teams, makes it really good. But because it has no speed boosting options, it can easily be revenge killed by pokemon like Dragapult (or Lycanroc which is a bit niche but life Orb boosted rock slide OHKOs). You COULD run trailblaze but then you either dont have good grass stab or dont have coverage.
Yeah considering how snealers stats are and it has the better offensive typing and better ability, ogrepon is fine if not slightly worse than sneasler.
Ogerpon stayed in her cave because she was afraid everyone hated her for being a monster. But when we saw what a monster she truly was, we loved her all the more for it.
Fire ogre absolutely steamrolls stall. Mold breaker means unaware pokes are unable to ignore swords dance boosts, so it leaves skeledirge(resists both stabs, but nailed by knock off and stomping tantrum + will-o-wisp doesn't touch it, so dirge really isn't an answer) and iron defense corviknight(requires tera + ivy cudgel has a high crit rate).
I think Horn Leech could be an interesting option. It could help make up for the lack of heavy duty boots somewhat for the masked forms, but the power difference between it and Wood Hammer / Power Whip are huge.
For singles players it’s nice to have a mon that isn’t like calyrex or regileki from these dlcs that get banished to Ubers from being over statted, insane signature moves and abilities. Ogerpon is really cool by design but still tame and fair for competitive at a first glance
Ivy Cudgel, as the Grass type, can get: STAB, Tera Boost, and a Choice Band boost. That's a 150% Damage boost, Aka +3, AKA a 2.5x Damage boost... that makes Ivy Cudgel a 100% Accurate move with 250 Base Power. No Draw back! (Except this being your 1 Tera for the match) This is insane!! 😂😂😂
The sentiment about seeing a Pokemon not being min maxed like crazy hits especially hard after these two generations. It also shows that there are ways of making great and interesting Pokémon beyond amazing stat distribution. In particular, Ogerpon's mechanics seem like a second attempt at a Zacian/Zamazenta. Only real knock against it from me is that true to Pokémon, some of her forms are quite better than others.
I honestly don’t know. I think all the forms are pretty good. Default is obviously really good as is hearth, but rock is also pretty damn crazy. It has horn Leach sd with sturdy which frequently lets you gain back your sturdy or enough hp to live another attack after terra defense boost. + rock is actually kinda busted offensively in a way that a lot of teams are simply not prepared for. With fighting coverage, you have a pretty nasty mix of speed, power, and “why won’t this thing DIE!” The water form is the only one that stands out to me as being less busted on paper but i would not write it off especially in vgc. All 4 seem really good to me.
3:35 That is indeed what I do and with its speed boost you can run adamant and still outrun mons like timid dragapult or timid/jolly base 95 choice scarf users. Also I am pretty sure the 2 best forms of ogerpon are teal and hearthflame but I am having difficulty on which one is 3rd or 4th. At first I thought cornerstome was the weakest then I changed my mind as I thought water absorb is a terrible ability at least in singles unlike sturdy. I might have to say that the winner for 3rd place is uncertain as the more that I look at it, the more useless the abilities for these forms are in terms of singles(sturdy conflicts with the defense boost from tera and can be broken by stealth rocks and water absorb is useless on a mon with a 4x resistance for singles). Although both are good abilities for doubles even with some caveats like water absorbs specific use in redirection and sturdy conflicting with the tera defense boost but both are certainly strong, don't get me wrong.
The fact that the water grass variant kept that Ursaluna alive in front of a R.Urshifu and Amoongus is crazy! Ogerpon is literally going to take over the format. I hope it takes over number one usage from Fluttermane.
I picked the fire mask because I realized while playing the Teal Mask that my team had zero option against Water-type Pokémon after my Scovillain was violently murdered by Penny's Vaporeon, and added Ogerpon to my team to fill the hole in my heart. I took my Flamigo off the team for her since Quaquaval could handle the same Flying and Fighting-type coverage. I did not know the masks gave a 1.2X attack boost, in addition to 2.0X STAB when terrastalized, plus the 1.5X increase from the fire mask's ability accounting for type effectiveness, and thats a crazy amount of damage.
so, in other words, the pokemon itself isn't that bad, it's the versatility it has. it's sort of like a discount mew that's more offensively focused and has stab on whatever you want.
If it was possible to run items on the dual type mask forms then an Assault Vest on the Rock form with Sandstorm and the tera defense boost would've been real interesting.
I really like ogerpon because it has lots of strenghts but some weaknesses so you can play around its not just urshifu saying guaranteed crit + go through protect sorry L
For singles, I personally like the prospect of Cornerstone Ogerpon as a lead mon, as it offers some interesting traits that differentiate it from Meowscarada. This is between it having the built-in Focus Sash so it has more opportunity to perform actions in the lead slot when combined with its good speed tier, and the fact that it is a Grass type that laughs at the face of Flying types (aka opposing Defoggers). However in comparison to Meow, it is slower, no STAB on Knock Off, cannot run a Band or Boots, and lacks Protean as an ability, so it occupies a different lead niche than Meow that depends on the team you are using. It is the Ogerpon form that doesn't really care about Tera'ing, which is nice since it frees up Tera for the rest of the team. For the other forms, I can see Wellspring have a role in the tier, between its nice defensive typing and the fact that it laughs at the face of Rain teams. Heartflame is easily the form we see the most currently in Singles between its super attack boosts and dual STAB. That being said, we are currently in a fast paced meta with Aurora Veil offense everywhere, which Heartflame definitely benefits from. If the meta slows down and becomes more hazards oriented like pre-DLC, then I can see the mon run into some real issues due to its permanent SR weakness. As time went on, I realize that Teal form probably isn't that good for OU. It having a free item slot is very nice, but it being a pure Grass type (no secondary STAB) with no way to change types definitely hurts this mon immensely, especially since it doesn't get the inherent 1.2x boost like the other forms. This mon also highly struggles in dealing with the prominent Flying type mons in the tier (aka most of the Defoggers), being forced to slot in the weak Rock Tomb to actually pose a threat to them. It is also funnily enough the form that probably relies on Tera the most, cause otherwise it doesn't have much traits to its name to avoid being outclassed by the other offensive Grass types in the tier. Without Tera, it has to contend with the higher strength, physical bulk, and Grassy Terrain of Rillaboom, as well as the higher speed, dual STAB, and Protean of Meowscarada. As a lead, it is woefully outclassed by Meowscarada, with Meow being naturally faster without the need to Tera, and outclassed by its own Cornerstone form since it actually has means to threaten opposing Defoggers.
Grassy seed ogerpon for vgc supported by AV rillaboom and chien pao I'd very good, can set up grass, u turn out into chien pao to get the Def drop and ohko a lot of Pokémon with a boosted ivy, can also tera to get the speed boosted, adaptability 130BP ivy. Very powerful mon
I think the fire one looks neat. If you get a turn to setup, maybe get a tailwind as well, then you can likely just sweep. With a swords dance and terra ability boost, that'd be 120 base attack times 2.5, given another 1.2 times for the mask, and then stab bonus as well, with fire being a pretty good offensive type. Ivy Cudgel, for instance, would be 100*2.5*1.2*1.5=450 power. For comparison, Fishious Rend with Choice Band, Strong Jaw, STAB and its own bonus is 574 power, on a poke with 90 base attack. I doubt it will be as oppressive as the Fish, but Ogerpon has the makings for a very fun and potent sweeper.
so Ogerpon gets... an effective alternate form when it Teras that gives it a new ability, increases its stats, gives it a much more intimidating design AND you can only do it once per battle?| they wanna add Mega Evolution back so bad
Follow me water seems a fair bit useful using it to stop spore and urshifu surging strikes because of water absorb but the pokemon isn't that tanky which means pokemon might just end up KOing it
With Ivy Crudgel with a base attack stat of 100 along with the appropriate terrain and a item to boost it and a set up of attack stat times 3 will do insane damage.
Seems like Ogerpon went with the same philosophy as Urshifu; not too strong statwise, but with a unique design that makes it shine. I hope it doesn't end up broken af and banned to Ubers. More importantly, if they're going with that, the next legendary from the Indigo DLC is likely gonna be Calyrex tier, which is dreadful. But anyways, let's see.
Another relevant fact is that the fire, water and rock forms have a 1.2x boost of all the moves, soo basically the same boost of expert belt. This is really good because that compensate the fact that you dont have an item basically.
The only pokemon that I can say without a doubt won me over even before knowing abt its origin, it's shaped like a friend andi love it. It also became a god with 4 different forms and an amazing movepool
I used the fire form and I just want to say, set up sun with nine tails or torkoal. Send out Ogerpon safely. Use teralizeation fire. Have a moveset of Horn leech and Ivy cudgel. Gg you win game if you outspeed. I took out a iron defense boosted zamazenta in 1 ivy cudgel and 1 u turn cuz every hit even if it is not stab does 1.2x extra dmg along with stat boost.
