Not sure if you knew this, but Irene isn't in the movie "Flashdance" she co-wrote and sang the theme song, which was a monster hit. Jennifer Beals and a dance double are in the movie. Irene did star in the film "Fame" as Coco Hernandez. She sang a few songs in the film. You should definitely check out the movie. It is at turns gritty, heartfelt, heartbreaking and inspiring. Irene also sings the moving ballad "Out Here On My Own" . Both songs were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song, "Fame " won. Irene was also the original Sparkle in the film of the same name. She will be truly missed.

Just wanted to clarify: I think you two got the idea that the woman dancing in the video for Flashdance was Irene Cara. She was the singer on the soundtrack, but the female lead in Flashdance was Jennifer Beals, and Beals herself had body doubles for the dancing. In the final dance sequence (which is primarily what you see in that video), there is not only a dancer doubling for Beals, but also a gymnast for the leaps and even a 16-year-old boy who did the break dancing.

Oh man, I hadn't heard she passed until you guys told me! Damn. I had a big crush on her in the early 80s. Rest in peace, sweet angel. 😥

RIP Irene Cara. She had a top 20 hit in 1984 with a song called “Why Me?” which always seems to make it on my 80s playlists. Bit of a harder edge than Flashdance and Fame.

Thank you so much for this...RIP Irene Cara! 💔💗🕯I loved her so much as a kid watching the movie Fame and the TV show Fame too. I loved her voice and her energy. I had this album and Flashdance (which I was obsessed with and wanted to he a dancer). You have to listen to "Out Here On My Own"! 💜💜💜

I remember rushing home from school to watch the show every week. Star maker was the first record I ever bought. Just listening to this takes me back to good days. RIP Irene Cara.

Good choice 😉 R.I.P., Irene Cara. Two of the most iconic 80s songs she got.

I watched this movie 3 times when it came out. Great songs, brilliant, raw performances, with a very real 1980s New York as a backdrop. Irene Cara was as good an actress as she was a singer-songwriter. She was such a part of our lives! Watch "Out Here On My Own" from the movie. She starts softly and then belts it out. No accompaniment except for the piano, which she plays herself. I'm completely heartbroken she's gone. Too soon, too soon.

You guys have to listen to Irene's "Out Here On My Own." It's a different style BUT her role as "Coco Hernandez" in "Fame" was ground-breaking!
