It makes you wonder why more players don't do it. Most MLB players were, at one point, the best pitchers and hitters on their teams (I'm talking little league/high school here), so I think at one point they're just forced to make a decision on which one they want to be because of how high the competition is. They just feel like they need to focus on one or the other to make it.

@@zeroinifnite5730 generally speaking, it's a lot more valuable (especially in the AL) to have someone solely focus their efforts on being the best pitcher possible, or the best hitter possible. Specialization often makes for higher skill ceilings, but sometimes dudes like Ohtani come along who are just godlike at both and decide that it's not a handicap to hone both ends of the game

It’s simple economics. Specialization allows for more efficiency. Although I’m sure guys like deGrom (and others) wouldn’t be bad hitters in their own right

Tampa has a guy who was drafted as 1B/P in 2017, and was a solid hitter. Brendon McKay. He was dominant on the mound and went AA to AAA to MLB in 2019 (and wasn't great). Lost 2020 with a shoulder surgery and is optioned to the minors with shoulder issues currently. He's 25 so not like they have forever to wait for his bat to develop.

Well not the MLB boycotters, that’s the only person that wouldn’t like Jomboys breakdowns.

We're (thankfully) at a point in the sport where players are more injury-aware and aren't going out there trying to hurt other players. Rules like the Posey rule helped a lot, but there are far fewer players throwing at batter's heads, making hard slides into second, or tripping up first basemen (Machado is guilty of the latter two, but he seems to have cleaned up his game on the Padres). An old school, dirty player would have seen this as an opportunity to take out an opposing pitcher without breaking the rules. Glad to see that Abreu doesn't have that shitty mindset.
