I agree the way he explains the sport of baseball is incredible changes your point of view on the sport and how baseball is so strategic. Just like I didn't know anything about cricket until Jomboy started posting cricket videos and it has me so interested in learning more about the sport of cricket I always look forward to the next cricket breakdowns 😂😂😂 Jomboy is second to none!

Yup, he highlights a ton of “minor” details that a casual observer would never notice as they’re impacting the game. It hasn’t personally made me watch more baseball, but I could definitely see it encouraging more people to watch as they understand what is happening better. Without baseball knowledge, it can seem like the only action is the pitcher/hitter and even that just seems random,

The long ball is a rally killer. Pitchers would rather give up a solo tape measure shot than having to struggle through a stressful mess out of the stretch to keep more than one or two from crossing the dish.

Fact of the matter is you need power to catch up to elite fastballs and that's the direction pitchers are trending in. Gotta be able to catch up to those while also ready to take what's given. Not an easy task but yeah gotta be able to catch up to triple digits these days.

If nothing else you hold the man at second. We called it "put the ball in your pocket". I can see why he went home as his momentum had him heading that way already, but he could've just as easily held on to it and stopped the play.

If he hadn’t thrown home to stop the runner from scoring, then there wouldn’t have been a runner at 2nd, because he would’ve thrown there, instead, and got him out. There was only 2 realistic outcomes, depending on what he decided to do. His choices were to either throw to 2nd for a double play, which would’ve given up a run, but it would’ve also cleared the bases, or throw to home, and get the lead runner out, but leave runners on 1st and 2nd. The whole question is, is it better to be: A) Up 3 runs, with runners on 1st and 2nd, and 1 out? OR B) Up 2 runs, with no runners on base, and 2 outs? Obviously, neither one of those outcomes ended up happening here, because that one dude just flat-out missed the easy throw from the catcher, but that doesn’t really change anything, though, as far as what the better play would’ve been in that situation. The question is certainly debatable, and there’s no right or wrong answer. I could definitely see advantages and disadvantages to either option, so I think it would be a tough decision to make, as a player, or as a manager. I really don’t get what you’re saying about holding the ball, though. Of course, he could have just held onto the ball, allowing the runner at 3rd to score, and preventing the runner headed to 2nd base, and the hitter, headed to 1st, from getting any further than that, if that’s what you mean. That really wouldn’t have made any sense, though, for him to have just held onto the ball, and not even attempted to make 1 of the 2 routine plays, to get an out or 2. I get being conservative, at times, when you have a pretty good lead and all, but that would just be way beyond playing it safe. Lol I mean, when would you ever try to get an out, if not on a play like that? I seriously apologize, in advance, if I’m misunderstanding you, and I’m pretty sure that I am. @@chriswebster24 sure. What I mean is since his momentum was carrying him to home, the time and skill needed to rotate and accurately make the play at second goes up. If he wasn't sure he could make the throw in either direction, you hold the ball to stop the play. Conservative, yes. Would it have been the right course of action? Maybe.

Home runs are good too but I hate watching a team swing them selves out of their shoes trying to hit a homer when they haven't hit shit all game. Even in the playoffs teams get lazy and just wait for HRs to score.

There’s such a thing as passed balls on wild pitches, stolen bases, and batters being able to reach a pitch not quite outside enough and hit it-Vlad Guerrero did it sometimes! Also just the idea that a pitcher can just command a batter to go to first base instead of actually playing the game is just offensive to the spirit of the game of baseball, too.

It really is. The 2020 Braves vs Dodgers series was amazing but the only people there was players family and friends. They need a roof but the design hurts the team.

Agreed. I became a Cardinals fan back during the early 80's "Whiteyball" era. I remember one season the leading HR hitter had less than 20 homers, but they had several players that could run like the wind.

@@camhabibi2217 are you serious? Have you been watching the game? Managers and hitting coaches have openly stated they’re instructing players to go for more home runs and don’t mind if the batting average drops as a side effect.

@@andrew3448 that’s definitely a big part of it but most teams have a back up catcher or utility substitute batting in the nine spot every few games with an average in the low 200s, if the leadoff man gets on base in front of them the bunt is still a better option than the likely double play.

That is so true about baseball announcers, or really just sports announcers in general. They assume you know nothing about the sport and they keep you there. No attempt to educate the viewers on the finer points of the game.

@Crazy Ohioan Cars, Guns, and Gaming Once Cabrera joined the 3K Hit club MLB Network asked who and when (if) will we see the next guy to reach 3,000? You'd probably think there must be a dozen or so guys that would threaten that total but the list is much smaller due to the lack of small ball in the game today. There are other factors as well including Covid shutdowns and labor disputes with the league costing players at least a few games and possibly 200-300+ games. Who are the stud hitters in the league that came up at a really young age who could come close and not become the next Andruw Jones or Carl Crawford or Juan Gonzalez? Mike Trout has missed too many games and has too much power to collect a ton of hits but look at Bryce Harper. Harper Walks and K's like Adam Dunn did and his power is hot and cold but frankly Bryce doesn't get enough hits. His OBP is usually high but like a Bonds not enough singles to threaten 3000. I think the only 2 with a shot are Freddie Freeman and Manny Machado based on their current numbers, injury history, and the guys that will protect them for the next 5+ years in their lineups.

I miss the good old days of Whitey Herzog's Cardinals, guys like Rickey Henderson and Vince Coleman. That's one reason I enjoy Korean and Japanese baseball today. They're very old-school in the way they approach the game.

Back to the change in the game there aren't any guys in the game now who get 180-220 hits year-after-year. I hope Freeman gets there though.

I love listening to games on the radio. The guys announcing usually have vast knowledge of the game and they teach you a lot. I listen to Braves radio all the time and love it.

Agreed. Although the first thing that turned me off the MLB was both owners and players getting greedy, what has kept me away was the reliance on the HR. I grew up with Sparky Anderson (and the Big Red Machine), who always played for that one run. Strategy, intelligence, and small ball provide for a much more interesting game than two teams combining for nine dingers in a 7-5 final score.

With the high walk rate of modern baseball it should be possible. Of course they prefer to draw 3 walks and hit a home run, usually ending in 3 straight strikeouts and 3 runners stranded.

That 2015 Royals team was probably the most entertaining team i've ever watched in Sept/Oct, they were so fun

O's fan. And yeah, I remember that '15 post season all too well. But even though we got swept, couldn't help but root for the Royals against the Mets. Their brand of small ball was hands down the greatest thing to watch that year. Every play always had the potential to turn the game on its head and many times that was exactly what happened.

I just hope he gives all the context... it seems like most people are forgetting to mention that Swanson's control was awful the whole inning and with 2 outs in the 9th, a runner already on first, and Shohei Ohtani up next, we had absolutely no reason to intentionally hit Trout. I understand Trout being upset, but he took it way too personally for what it actually was. not to mention we've been hit by the Angels six times this year and have only hit them once (showing we're not a team that's trying to get revenge just because). also Jesse Winker was walking to 1st after getting hit when then people from the Angels dugout starting shouting things at him, which then lead him to turn towards the dugout and the fight breaking out. also the fact that the Angels swapped their original starter for some relief guy last minute, only to have the original starter come in after the ejections is very suspicious and kind of telling that they were definitely trying to fight and that this was intentional from the beginning. it's also pretty bs too that our 3 best hitters and manager got ejected (Julio getting ejected still doesn't fully add up unless there was unseen fighting from him), while almost no one of importance got ejected from the Angels. honestly the Angels showed they're a weak team by doing all this, and all their fans expecting us to stay quiet or trying to justify it because of Trout almost getting hit is ridiculous (especially when Justin Upton DID get hit in the head by them last week)... also Jomboy should make sure to point out Jesse Winker was taking big swings after Rendon's face grab (or whatever you want to classify it as) cause it seems like a lot of Angels fans think Rendon really did something by that, when in reality it was probably the weakest part of the brawl... anyway, idk what team you're a fan of, just figured there's a better chance Jomboy see's this here than me trying to comment individually

You got it totaly wrong, im guessing your a Mariners fan? They threw intentionally at Ohtani and Trouts head and keep on mind they had no intention of pitching to Trout because the very next pitch they intentionally walked him. You dont intentionally throw at Trout's or Ohtani's head and expect to get a free pass, it doesnt work like that. The Angels pitcher was just backing up there guy to show there was no place for that. Its all on the Mariners for that one they had it coming to them.

@@ryanreid9344 bruh, none of it was intentional from the Mariners side Saturday... the pitch thrown near Ohtani wasn't even that close to hitting him, he dipped back way further than he needed to while the pitch was just barely inside and high... as for Trout, Swanson couldn't control the ball at all that inning and walked McKinnon on 4 pitches high and outside (right batter's box). so when Trout was up and he threw another bad pitch (to the same batter's box) our pitching coach tried to talk to him and see what was going on, and then when the last pitch was wild causing McKinnon to advance to second and almost hit Trout in the head we chose to intentionally walk him cause we no longer had a potential force out on first and it would be to risky to pitch to him again when all of the pitches were hitting that side of the plate... why would we intentionally hit Trout with a runner on first, 2 outs, and Ohtani up next in a two run game? that doesn't make sense, and there's no good reason to do that... Trout took it way to personally thinking it was intentional when if you look at the context, there's no way Swanson was actually trying to hit him... it was a weak move by the Angels and Nevin trying to obviously to hit Julio in the head, and then actually hitting Jesse Winker the next inning was uncalled for and way more than just and eye for an eye

I want to agree, but that was such a simple play to home... You can't be thinking "Wait, what if my teammate makes an error?" You want your $325 million shortstop to play aggressive, right? 3rd baseman jacked it up and now needs to make up for it.

@@aaronbuckwalter96 yeah this was a little league mistake. Kids immediately think “don’t let them score” because thats how most other games are played. But baseball is one of the only sports where allowing a score could strategically benefit you in the long run. What a great breakdown
