I've had some experience with what stock setups look like, and they are CERTAINLY far more oily than what you have on your setup with a catch can, especially in that lower plenum area. Great video as always!

Important to note that the PCV-based recirculation approach doesn’t work well beyond street applications. Looking at something like time attack/HPDE, when you start living at 5000-7000 rpm for 20 minutes at a time the poor plenum vacuum and high crankcase pressure at high rpm, coupled with the small diameter orifices and hose often used in PCV systems mean the system has a real hard time keeping up. Lower pan bolts loosening, front/rear mains leaking, and fouling of the plug galleys are all side effects of the high crankcase pressure seen with a PCV-based system on track. This is made worse if you’re capping the left (North American driver) side valve cover to intake vent to force everything through the crossover, PCV, and catch can. TLDR: PCV-based is ok on the street. For the track get some -6AN, a Vibrant can, and vent to atmosphere.

Ran a catch can on my DE for years and years and it collects a fair amount of oil which is good to see. Shame about the rash on the silicone hoses, I had silicone rad hoses on a SR20DE that never did this.
@AnthonyJ350
@AnthonyJ350 Год назад
Ya I don't know why my coolant hoses did that. It's just cosmetic so I'll keep running them for now. Maybe I'll send some pics to Z1 and see what they think.

Hey AJ!! Nice video. We're back down memory lane. I will say that this add on has increased the longevity of my engine life and beneficial on the revups. I still collect around 2 ounces every month with daily driving. I was thinking of using a hydrophobic coating but not with the engine temperature so polishing is the way.

I wouldn't even worry about it The engine is a port fuel injection. And if not running a catch can on both sides why it even bother on one side only.
@AnthonyJ350
@AnthonyJ350 Год назад
Because the intake tube side only really gets used on wide open throttle. You can clearly see the difference using one on the PCV side. Do you have a video that shows otherwise on your own vehicle?

How many kilometers did you put on it when you did that initial video with the oil catch can? I just hit 40,000 original miles on my 2004 and wondering if it's a good idea to get an oil catch can. I still want to make the car look stalk I don't want to do too many crazy mods to it

I don't see how a little oil sheen on the intake manifold would make any difference. Yes around the throttle body it would
@AnthonyJ350

@@mikewaite3746 You just want to minimize oil mixing with the combustion mixture
@stealthg35infiniti94

Anthony, after 18 years of running, my intake is lightly stained. The minor staining will not affect performance. If it is a concern , run a spray can of Seafoam every 30k miles through the Throttle, and PVC Intake lines. Granted if you have a compromised engine passing lots of oil passing the rings,valve guides, I would recommend a catch can. I did polish the interior of the manifold and reshaped the intake Horns for better air flow. Seat of the pants Dyno say improvement occurred.
@AnthonyJ350

Don't you want to minimize how much oil gets in the combustion chamber for a better air/ fuel mixture?
@stealthg35infiniti94
@stealthg35infiniti94 Год назад
@@AnthonyJ350 There's no sign or evidence of any oil or vapor in the runner tubes all the way to the valves. Why spend money on Placebo maintenance that is not required? Like I tell my students, spend money performing preventive maintenance that actually does means something ,not what just think could be doing some good.
@AnthonyJ350
@AnthonyJ350 Год назад
@@stealthg35infiniti94 That's anecdotal. @BrunerTuner just stated in the comments that he's dealt with a few VQs that have had oil in the intake manifold. So the question is, what's your sample size to determine this mod is a placebo?
@stealthg35infiniti94
@stealthg35infiniti94 Год назад
@@AnthonyJ350 Alot of oil bypass is determined by the way the engine is driven. Keeping your shifts below 3k, bypass is negligible. If you're frequently visiting Red Line, you WILL bypass and consume more oil. Racing applications is the extreme of the situation in which a Catch Can is highly recommended. If you want to play, you going to have to pay.
