The cylindrical filters for fuel, oil, and air flow the same, from the outer periphery towards the center. If you use a remote filter adapter and attach the hoses backwards, the paper element blows up like a balloon, and it actually resists flow.
Is it possible that one side of the filter will work and the other won't? Or once the bypass valve open it pulls the oil down and doesn't goes through the medium?
With the similarities to a compressor in a small scale jet engine (the ones we make for rc) I wonder if with a bit of tinkering this could be turned into a component in a hobby jet engine. It would certainly remove a lot of the machining required
