This oil-free hummus uses vegetable broth instead of oil. Less fat and great flavor! It doesn't call for tahini, but feel free to add it. I now use fresh garlic and fresh lemon juice. www.forksoverknives.com/recip... ENJOY!
Vitamix hint: Use the tamper! The Vitamix tamper is meant to be used while the machine is running. You would not have needed to add additional broth if you would have used the tamper from the start as you were blending. I make nut butters with no liquid at all and they come out super creamy. Don't be afraid to tamp the ingredients down while blending. As long as the lid is on, the stopper prevents it from ever hitting the blades. Thank you so much for the recipe! I can't wait to try it out!
Thank you for your tampering tips! I was new to the Vitamix and was afraid to tamp! I love it that you make nut butters without adding any liquid. I now make my hummus in the food processor because you barely need any liquid and no tampering. ☺️I hope you like the recipe! Feel free to add tahini! 💖🌿
Thanks for the effort of making and sharing this video, one thing I highly recommend is to make most of these ingredients at home especially lemon juice and garlic are 2 of the most important nutrients which get lost if it is made days and months before and packaged. God bless you all.
This was delicious. I also added horseradish root to boost the flavor and Wowzer, it was amazing. Thanks for the oil free version. Never thought of adding veggie broth.
@@kathleenkastner Trader Joes sells a horseradish hummus that I love and I really hate buying things that I can learn to make and have control over the ingredients. So the horseradish wasn't my creative idea, but the creation of someone else. Thank you again for this wonderful recipe.
How interesting. I am a long time home made hummus maker. I always stove topped my chick peas. Using fresh garlic chopped would avoid the canola oil in the bottled garlic. I also add 1 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper annnnnd the cumin. I use distilled water in lieu of the veggie stock. I plan on adding the Bragg’s liquid amino sauce as a change. I also use about 1 1/2 tbsp of tahini and the juice of one fresh lemon (or lime). Thank you for your presentation. CMJ Canada
Thank you so much for your tips and feedback Charles! I have since modified the recipe and use fresh garlic and make it in a food processor where I don't need as much veggie broth. I love tahini but unfortunately I'm allergic to it. I'm glad you're adding it, with your other additions! 🙏🌿
Thank you for sharing. A few tips I've gleaned from others for other options in no oil hummus 1- use a peeled small zucchini in place of oil 2- use one can white beans and one can garbanzo beans, using some of the bean liquid instead of broth. 3- that using a food processor uses way less liquid than a blender dose when blending hummus.
I love simple truth brand....organic AND non-gmo!!! My grocery store actually has the Braggs amino acid and the coconut is good too. One day I didn’t have two cans of garbanzo so I added a can of cannellini beans and I could tell a difference I liked it better !
Maurice Powers thanks for the feedback Maurice! I'm glad you love Simple Truth organic and that you can find Bragg's in your grocery store, that's great. I need to try the coconut aminos. Thanks also for letting me know about the c beans working well for the hummus. 🙏🌿
Yay finally a hummus recipe that doesn't require tahini!! Or added olive oil. Another thought I've seen store bough hummus has: pine nuts on top. How long will this hummus be good for in refrigeration?
Thanks for this video! I've seen liquid aminos in recipes and had no idea what it was or where to buy it so great to know I can substitute it with tamari!
You can add salsa and the chickpea juice to make a delicious hummus ,and add some diced green chilies, then add some garlic, and some cayenne, and leave everything out even the tahini.
Hi Kathleen, I just noticed that Trader Joe's Vegetable Broth (my fave!) have decided to start adding oil to it. When they changed the label style recently, I started to read the ingredients just to make sure they didn't change any. To my disappointment, they added oil. UGH! The Simple Truth Organics brand is still ok, so at least I have one to fall back on! Just thought I'd let you know!
guitrs8 thank you for the feedback! Good to know about the Trader Joe's brand with oil. I love Simple Truth organic brand so I'm happy to know they are oil-free! ❤️🌿
Thank you so much for bringing this to my attention! What happened was my Trader Joe's store brought in Organic Vegetable "Stock" in place of their Organic Vegetable Broth (which they had run out of). The stock (both regular and low sodium) has oil. They finally received more broth from their warehouse, and now I am a happy camper!! :)
Another very simple way to make hummus oil free is to add your chickpeas (I use organic canned chickpeas), tahini, garlic, lemon juice (I like mine pretty lemony), salt, and whatever else you are adding (I add cumin and a touch of cayenne pepper, or a roasted red bell pepper), begin to process in the food processor, and then simply add some reserved liquid from the canned chickpeas to the hummus. Works like a dream, and there is one less ingredient to buy. :)
Yes, I know. People can make their own choices on that subject. I still eat some nuts and seeds. They are high in Vitamin E (among other things) which has powerful cancer fighting properties. There is disagreement on consuming nuts and seeds among FOK, Fuhrman, and others. Sunflower seeds have very high anti-angiogenesis properties (making it a potent cancer fighting food) and are very high in vitamin E. I use them, along with flax seed, pumpkin seeds, quite a bit of hemp seed (another incredibly nutrient filled seed), and some nuts. I do not use processed oils of any kind. That's what is right for me and my health issues. Blessings!
Regarding my original comment, I forgot to mention that I add a few teaspoons of turmeric to my hummus as well. Turmeric has powerful anti-inflammatory properties. I make oil free baked turmeric falafel as well, which are super tasty.
If you ever had any questions about the virtues of a WFPB, oil free lifestyle just look at at the angles on this girl here....Nuff said.........2 weeks in, down 10 pounds, taste buds waking up..
It is now time to respond to the fast “unhealthy” food industry and it's franchises. This can be led by the MDs and other professions who so eloquently explain the reason it is needed. I envision such a response would use the McDonald's playbook starting with its golden arches. Instead of arches a giant silver V would be underlined with the franchise name: Whofoplaba (short for Whole Food Plant Based). It would serve both take-out and dine-in. A super salad bar offering no less than 25 vegies would be the centerpiece (local and organic where possible). Of course it would include a range of nuts and seeds. In addition, a fruit salad bar would be a feature. Again, at least 25 choices could be made available. The menu would range from raw broccoli and cauliflower with a wide choice of hummus dip to cooked rice and beans, steamed vegetables, varieties of starches including baked potatoes, mashed sweet potatoes. To round out the menu selections choices can be made from the many vegan recipes created and already published. Finally customers could request customized personal plates based on their personal preference. A highlight of a WHOFOPLABA franchise would include a library where customers would have the opportunity to purchase many of the Whofoplaba books available. McDonalds is successful because it bought the land upon which it built the structure. Thus it had absolute control of what was offered and how it was managed, else the franchisee would have to go. I am addressing this suggestion to the many Whofoplaba doctors and other professionals, some of whom are listed below. T. Colin Campbell, PhD, Caldwell Esselstyn, MD, John A. McDougall, MD, Joel Fuhrman MD, Neal Barnard, MD, Brooke Goldner, MD, Michael Greger, MD, Michael Klaper, MD, Joel Kahn, M, Pamela A. Popper, PhD, ND, Garth Davis, MD, Alan Goldhamer, DC,Doug D, Lisle, PhD, Robert Ostfeld, MD, MS, Ellsworth Wareham, MD, Matthew Lederman, MD, Alona Pulde, MD, Dean Ornish MD, Ron Weiss MD, Robert Lustig MD, Kim Williams MD, Joanne Kjong MD, Anthony Lim MD, Brenda Dsavuas RS, Micelle McMacken MD, Tati Kvis MD, Benjamin Benulis MD, and so many more. I am also asking the vegan community to offer your support as future customers. On March 1, 2019 I started my third year as a vegan. Two years ago I was obese, had diabetes and high blood pressure and consuming lots of drugs. After watching youtube videos of most of those listed above, I am no longer obese and do not have high blood pressure or diabetes. And I take no drugs. I am 78 years of age and now b elieve I will make it to 100.
Congratulations on transforming your health with a whole food plant-based diets! I love all the doctors you listed in your comment. I'm certified in plant-based nutrition with the physicians committee so I'm a huge fan of Dr Barnard! I hope the healthy restaurants you describe will pop up all over the world. thank you for spreading the message of plant-based nutrition. 🌿🙏
I totally understand! I think it's fine to use it from a jar or bottle. keep an eye on it that it doesn't go bad over time. The garlic can be optional. You can also add a little tahini if you like. The cumin gives it flavor. Thanks! 🌿🙏
Thanks! Sometimes the speed is left on high from the previous use. I have to watch the video again to see if I said to drain the chickpeas but I definitely drain them.
Hi all! I’m allergic to soy, so coconut aminos are my go to! All the different brands taste different, some are more sweet, some are more salty. They are a great substitute for all the soy based sauce ingredients.
You could make the hummus used in the Smoky Little devils instead. It doesn't use soy sauce. You could also omit it from this recipe and use the spices and veggie broth instead. 🙏
there's a link to the forks over Knives recipe in my comments. You should be able to print it from there. If not, it's a brief recipe so you could quickly write it down. Thank you! 🙏🌿
I think Bragg's tastes absolutely vile. I made two recipes with it included and they both went into the trash. Is tamari any better? I bought Braggs Aminos at Walmart
good question! Varies depending on which veggie broth you use and whether you put salt in it or not. You could omit the salt and get a low sodium veggie broth to help reduce it.
I agree with no added oil, but why should there be a problem with the oil naturally contained in the whole food? Even chickpeas contain oil & so does garlic.
Thank you. I was also thinking that by adding Tahiti, you are in essence adding fat or "oil". As i am lowering my caloric density and eliminaring all hidden sources of fat.
@@enasellsflorida6710 Exactly! I assume this is why Forks over knives did not put tahini in this recipe. I think it tastes delicious without it. Thanks for your feedback! 🙏💖🌿
@@kathleenkastner I just made a double batch but I got the same results I usually get at home so yeah. I made a BBQ hummus with onion powder, garlic cloves, smoked paprika, mustard powder, Maple syrup and chili powder for spice and I use coconut aminos way lower in sodium then liquid aminos and just as delicious.
I am afraid she wasn't using it properly, she should have had it on high and tamped it down whilst it was running, instead of turning it off and trying to tamp it down. I use my vitamix all the time for gorgeous smooth hummus
Oh. My. Gosh. Squeeze a lemon. That bottled stuff is vile. And....I’m hoping that is organic garlic and hasnt originated in China where garlic is grown in crap and bleached.... Otherwise, good recipe.
