Your emphasis on values took out mystery out of painting. I am still struggling but to my amazement, when I started paying attention to values the likeness of the persons face appear even before I put any details! Thanks for sharing!
been binge listening to your videos this morning whilst painting - it's been uncanny how many times you were saying something at the exact time I was making that same mistake - really - so funny . Love this! Nothing better than to paint metal colors on a container in still life work. Only thing better is to hear someone say: "Gee, who makes that great looking silver or copper paint"!! :D

It is amazing to see how good it looks at the end from a distance, and during the process you are wandering if Mark is making is first mistake. But no, it's amazing how everything develop. Wow another amazing painting from the Master.
Dear Mark, thanks for your awesome videos! Your method is something that helped me overcome so many issues that kept me from having fun when painting. I ran into some difficulty when painting sight-size from life without a colorchecker. I was just using a palette knife or a paint covered brush in north facing skylight. if it looked the exact same on my palette knife (at a similar angle as a colorchecker) when I held it up to my model, things looked exactly right, but as soon as I started painting, it was way off and the values didn't match up at all. I also noticed that when I just use regular tube paint, if a mixture contains white, as soon as you thin down your paint with medium, the white pops up the value almost half a step. What the people that instructed me told me was to make a small color study in 45 minutes and mix the main large color masses by putting eyeballed mixtures on the study canvas and start fixing those piles when every color is on there to see it in relation to each other. I ended up doing several of those and spending a lot more time on it than I wanted to. Do you have any tips or easier solutions to this issue, or is the only solution to stick to isolating color with a black ring around it? Best regards, Rutger

Great vid, very informative. Your points are spot on, for example using a bristle brush for detail and keeping the lines loose and slightly abstract for painterly effect, and rendering form so it looks correct from a distance but not necessarily close-in (the Sargent look) though alot easier said than done.

I fully agree on the abstraction. It looks much more interesting in this rougher way and it will read excellently from a distance, which is how most art will be seen on a wall anyway. Interesting comment on true full black as well. I hear a lot of artists prefer not to use their darkest black (or use a substitute darkest dark). I never quite understood that fear (?), because why settle for a value range going from 3 to 8 on a scale of 10, instead of 1 to 10 and get full range of values? In case of this particular still-life I guess the black background demands a strong color, but I see you use it within the shadow as well. I'm going to have to experiment with that. :)
You are an amazing painter. I tried ths painting and failed miserably. It is so expensive to do this. I cannot seem to get my water mixable oils to flow as nicely as yours, and it seems as if my brushes are too stiff. I think I need to take a class somewhere from someone that knows what they are doing. I could spend a fortune on this trying to figure it out, and have limited resources. The years of experience that you have shows in your work, and in the way that you teach it. I did make a color checker and stand. I think it will take me a while to really understand color and how to mix it, and I suspect that took you years of experience as well. You have worked hard to get where you are, i would not say it is a gift, because that discounts all the hard work and effort that you have invested into this art. I applaud you for sharing with us, and that your insights are so valuable for people like me. I would quit so easily in the past. Even today I got frustrated with my really weak ability and tossed my attempt into the garbage in disgust. I wanted to just quit that moment for good. However, I know I will pull it all out again and start over with a fresh mind and a willingness to learn more. Your talent is wonderful to see. Kindly, David
Mark I love to listen to all your video. I work with values also while drawing and while painting. But I have a question : your oil on the palet seems wet. Which medium do you use to make it so wet?
Hi Mark. I'm not sure if this has been asked before but I see that you don't mix or premix your colours with a palette knife. Instead you favour the brush. Why is that?
Can you talk some about shipping one's work to buyers? I've seen in movies where the canvas is taken off the wood and the canvas is rolled up, can this be done to a oil painting or is it always shipped on it's frame?
Hey, you say you don't support putting in any highlights and like to go from dark to light. What do you think of Richard Schmid's philosophy of putting the most obvious and easy to judge values and colors and edges down first, and then working in between them? I personally put the darkest darks, and dab the lightest light somewhere as well, I find it helps establish my boundaries as far as value and temperature, and makes perfect sense to my brain
Can you tell me what video editing software you use to make your videos? You seem to be able to do so much - I'm only familiar with the extremely limited RU-vid editor. If I'm gonna spring $ for software I might as well get something I enjoy watching as your videos are great.
May be unrelated but he has an advanced photography guide where he recommends the Olympus OM-D E-M10 for his camera. I wonder if he uses that for video.

I like the little painting you did here. During this video you referred to your website and your portrait paintings. Are you saying you painted those as you did here, freehand and from life?
the quality of the paint seems good to me in terms of brightness and the color without envargo I feel that the paint mass expands too much it lacks stiffness to withstand the coatings of the brush when one takes a little paint expands so much that it is lost in a flat plaster as if it were enamel paint for metal doors, I feel that it is not optimal to give thick pastes in first intention
I have a question, I noticed The painter doesn't respond questions here, but Can I draw the whole sketch prior to paint on the canvas with a water based pencil or the yellow stabilo he used in other videos?
Mark, in this painting you used one or maybe two brushes, whereas I notice that in your earlier video 'How to paint in oil' (the pewter mug), you had a fistful of about 10 brushes. Why did you use so many. Were they for different colour groups or some other reason? Thanks.
I know you emphasize painting from dark to light, but you also emphasize painting in some background around whatever object you're painting. What if your background is white--or nearly white? Would Your rules still apply?

As an Architect, I often refer to an architectural rendering - especially for a public meeting or display - as a 5-ft rendering or a 10 or even 25-ft rendering. Thinking that-way really influenced the level of detail and even the color-values. Too-much fiddlieness actually detracts when viewed from a distance.
Watch Mark's video of him painting a silver cup. I believe he uses his color checker in that video. Also Mark has some really nice tools (including a color checker) for painting available on his website. Mark's items are of high quality and design. Mark probably could have been a furniture maker. He's a multi talented guy.
I think you hold back too much if it comes to the light spots. Yes, we all know its not a good idea to use too much white but I think you should really hype the contrast more.
Mark paints realism. He's painting the exact tones from life. Hyped contrast would look amateur and unrealistic. 1st and most often seen amateur mistake - over done contrast!
Theres a big difference then between what he saw and what the camera caught. Just look at the finished piece of his and the reference photo. The value contrast in the reference is clearly higher. I'm not saying you should overdo but why would underdo instead? This is not meant offensive however, just frankly speaking my mind.
He asks 75.000 for a single portrait, has painted 2 U.S presidents, have lines of students wanting to learn with him and even have his own brand of paint... You say like you have something to teach him.... ¬¬ ... "you have improved a lot" lol..... he may have brushes older than you buddy.
