I hope you all do great things in 2018!
This is 8 x 10 inches, oil on hardboard. It was completed in about 1 hour. I was trying to emphasize a secondary color palette, using green, purple, and orange as the main scheme. My palette includes Titanium White, Indian Yellow, Cadmium Orange, Napthol Red, Phthalo Green, Phthalo Blue, Burnt Umber, and Mars Black. I'm using solvent-free gel and a walnut oil for my medium: amzn.to/2DvrrtF

Do you start w a wet surface grey tone to h Keep some consistency? Btw your intuition level in awesome!
@LarrivaArt
@LarrivaArt 6 лет назад
The grey was actually dry when I started. I like a toned surface to start from so I can work darker and lighter on top of it. I usually oil up the surface, but I used a wet brown to start with anyway.
@tpitman
@tpitman 4 года назад
@@LarrivaArt Looks like you use sable brushes or an equivalent. Does the relative softness of a sable, compared to a bristle, keep subsequent paint strokes from disturbing the wet paint underneath? Thanks.
@LarrivaArt
@LarrivaArt 4 года назад
@@tpitman Yep, you got it. I use soft taklon brushes to minimize disturbing the under layers. It still takes a light touch and softer, fatter top paint to do it, though.

I love your paintings and art style!! Your style is modern, but it's ACTUAL art. Unlike those conma- - uhhh! I mean artists that just splatter red dots on a canvas, call it "art" and sell it for a billion dollars.

Armor Cake you're the type to dismiss any style besides realism as art.
@BigDaddyZakk420

I need to up my pace and work faster as you do. I feel like I'm way too meticulous. I've been trying to loosen up my approach lately to get more and more abstraction out of my portraits but it's tough to break your habits. It's funny when non-artists look at some super realism and think it's just incredible when in all actuality proper Impressionism (such as your work) is a hundred times more difficult to achieve, and far more impressive/creative.
@LarrivaArt
@LarrivaArt 6 лет назад
There is value in doing time limited exercises. However in my case, the speed is a result of my process, not a cause. If you work on making deliberately designed, economical brush strokes, speed is usually a result.

Hi there! I'm having trouble trying to manipulate my oil paint. Every time I set it onto the canvas it feels really dry, like I can hardly move it around. One spread of paint on my canvas and I already have to gather some more onto my paint brush. I really cant paint anything like that. I was wondering if someone could help with my problem? I don't know what I'm doing wrong and i'm admittedly a complete beginner at this.
@alexhill9376

AH_AppleCrashaa have you tried adding turps to the paint to make it more fluid and thinner?
@CheeseLord
@CheeseLord 6 лет назад
you're definitely going to need some kind of thinner- there's ways you can make your own or you can buy linseed oil/turpentine/etc. from art or hardware stores. how much you mix in is up to how thin or thick you like your paint- definitely read some tutorials!!
@LarrivaArt
@LarrivaArt 6 лет назад
Yes, adding some thinner or medium to your paint should help. Also, make sure you are working on a surface that's properly sealed with gesso, otherwise it might suck the fluidity right out of your paint.
@wireo

Oh okay! Thank you!

Also, the old Bob Ross trick of painting liquid white or liquid clear onto your canvas would help enormously. It helps the paint glide better, rather than getting so stuck to the canvas.
