OK, I Rebuilt the Marvel Schebler Carb ― Will My Antique Tractor Run Now?

Over the winter I rebuilt my Marvel Schebler carburetor, but have not had a chance to put it on the tractor and try to start it - until today. Today was the first 'rain all day' day of the year (over 3" so-far), so I got to work on the tractor. I had to try several things to stop the carburetor from leaking, but in the end there are no leaks and I drove the tractor out of the machine shed on it's own steam, and it's running very well!
The tractor is a 1953 Ferguson TO20. The I.V. pole I used is listed below along with the auxiliary fuel tank:

Quick update: It's not even 24 hours since I made this video, and on a hunch I went over to the tractor and gave the ammeter the slightest of taps, and it went straight to zero. That is a huge relief! Now I can concentrate on getting the fuel lines hooked back up so I can drive it around and see what the oil pressure gauge does under load - but I believe that will be fine as well, and I can finally put this tractor to work! 😊

With only one wire to the alternator all you need do is rev the engine and that will ignite the alternator and it will charge. Your oil pressure is fine at 12 psi. If you had all new bearings it would not be over 20 psi.

Glad I come across your channel. Have a Lincoln SA200 with a Marvel Schebler carbureator that leaks about the same way. Watched how you tested your carb and got some good ideas of how to fix mine. Appreciated the video.

@@PlanetMojo I am having a difficult time finding the hose and fitting that runs from Aux Tank to carb to test starting and bypassing gas tank and sediment bowl like you did. I can’t find the right hose fitting that screws into to the carb strainer where the fuel line would be. Do you remember any specifics.

@@PlanetMojo Thx. I have looked for another tractor video that by-passed the fuel tank and carb with only the Aux fuel tank you purchased. So you are the only one I saw that did that work around with the carb on a tractor. It caught my attention. I bought the Aux tank but I am stuck on finding fuel line and fuel nipple size. Did you tank fuel stainer off carb?(The part that orig fuel line screwed into?

@@alanhart9992 Hi Alan, the test tank feeds right into the normal fuel port. What I did was measure the fitting that went into that port, and went to Menards and found a fine thread brass fitting that had that same thread on one side, and a nose barb on the other. When I get out there (may be a couple of hours), I'll see if it's still connected to the test tank and get a picture/measurements off of it. It's probably 3/8" NPT, but don't quote ne on that. If I can find it, I'll post the image and description in the community section and link to it here.

When I first installed this (Marvel Schebler) carburetor and it promptly leaked all over the place I was pretty disheartened. It actually had several problems that I troubleshot my way through, and in the end the old Ferguson tractor is running quite smoothly! Now I need to troubleshoot the ammeter reading 22 amps when the tractor is off, and the oil gauge reading 12 psi at idle. I also need to get the fuel line hooked up properly and take care of the slight leak at the sediment bowl. I'm going to pull the bowl off and Teflon tape the threads - that should take care of that. Lots of little things to come after that, and I will be replacing the brakes as well at some point soon. We are looking for a brush hog currently and when we find one, I will be doing some work in the pastures with that. So-far so-good! 😊 Economy I.V. Good Morning Mojo, it looks to me like your missing the regulator wiring for the alternator. If that is a Delco alternator, there should be two or three wires running to it. One larger wire coming off the post on the alternator ( which you already have) to the battery or a battery + terminal such as the battery terminal on the starter and at least one wire going to the "F" terminal on the regulator. to turn the alternator on. The alternator turn on circuit should run from the ignition switch to a charge indicator light to the F terminal of the regulator. If you would like ,I could maybe Email you a wiring schematic that my help.

Hi 51ubetcha! Thank you for your kind offer, but this alternator is part of a 12 volt conversion kit and is a one wire unit. There is no regulator as the alternator is internally regulated. I'll have to do some trouble shooting for sure, but that's not the problem. The gauge is new as they recommend you replace the 30 amp one with a 60 amp unit and possibly the gauge is bad? I have to do some testing and find out. The tractor actually starts and runs very nice. Here is the link to the conversion kit: www.steinertractor.com/MFS3805-Alternator-Conversion-Kit I'll have to get the fuel line hooked up and drive the unit a bit to see if it's charging and do a bit of detective work with a multimeter. It will be awesome to have a working tractor so I can quit doing everything by hand! 😊

@@denniswilson6426 Thanks Denis. She uses the Fosbury Flop technique which has been used since the late 60's according to her coach. Some of the girls she has competed with had a much flatter flight, but none of those girls made it to the state competition. Thanks for watching Dennis 😊

Planet, I made a donation to your channel thru PayPal to thank you for carb and aux fuel tank info. I ordered aux fuel tank thru Amazon. I have a question about the extra hose you bought to go to carb. I watched a previous video. But I am still confused what size fuel line you bought for that short run from shut off to carb. I think in a previous video you said 1/8” inlet. Is that correct?

Do you have any information on the barbed brass fitting you used on the carburetor? I'm looking to replace the old metal fuel line with a new rubber fuel hose that has an in-line fuel filter. I can't find info on the thread pitch going into carburetor. Also, any clue if this would be the same thread as the fitting at the sediment bowl?
@PlanetMojo
@PlanetMojo Год назад
It's believe it was 1/4" NPT to 1/4" hose barb. Not sure about the sediment bowl.

Father-in-law has a Ferguson TO-20 that was his father's. His was originally all Ferguson grey. Was yours painted similar to a Ford tractor at some point or were there "red belly" Fergusons as well? I have heard the Ford produced Ferguson designs (pre-Ferguson production) called "Fordson's" by some.
@PlanetMojo
@PlanetMojo 2 года назад
It should have been all gray, but I couldn't find any gray paint under the red - I'm thinking maybe the tractor was ordered with this pain scheme, but I really don't know for sure 🤔 The Fordson started production in 1917, and Ferguson did not have any input on that. That same year Ferguson invented a plough that could be attached to a Model T car, then eventually Ferguson developed the same plow for the Fordson, but it was not part of the Fordson, it was something you could buy and attach to a Fordson. The Fordson tractor name was derived from the original name of the factory: Henry Ford & Son. There is a lot more - but that is the gist of it. Ford and Ferguson finally got together in 1938, and Ford started making the 8N, which was initially called the Ford-Ferguson. Ford ripped-off Ferguson's 3-point hitch design, got sued by Ferguson, and lost. That's when production of the Ferguson TO-10 began.
