Oksana's performance of "The Swan" was breathtakingly beautiful, stunning and the number that she did with Viktor was great. She looked like she was having so much fun.
Oksana was SO incredibly musical. She just fell into place with the music without even trying. You can see this in the second piece with Viktor. She was truly incredible.
Extraordinary, all that more amazing considering how her early years were easily tragic enough to beat down even a tough individual. There will never be another one like her.
As a ballerina herself the absolute awe I was in when she started to dance on her toes almost like pointe shoes is... that was incredible and I can only imagine how hard it was in blades instead of proper shoes. The talent in this girl is amazing.
Interesting that another great skater in Men's category, the wonderful Yuzuru Hanyu, also skated to this theme at the Pyeong Chang 2018 Olympics' exhibiton performance after winning his 2nd Olympic Gold medal and writing history. Baiul and Hanyu will be remembered by showing the world what great ice skating actually is: not just jumps and points, but grace and poetry on ice
Who can’t forget this performance? Breath taking so artistic .. she knew how to execute each musical note so precisely gracefully at the same time make look so effortless and divine !!! Aww they don’t come like her anymore!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
No one has her range, going from executing the most balletic and artistic programme to jiving with such joy and making the audience have genuine fun. Oksana Baiul is truly THE skater
This was the performance that stuck in my mind from back then. I was mesmerized by this performance because for once I COULD NOT DISTINGUISH WHETHER SHE WAS SKATING OR DOING BALLET because her interpretation of the Swan was PERFECTLY DONE AND WELL DELIVERED. It's like watching a ballerina dance on ice WITHOUT SKATES. THAT'S HOW GOOD IT WAS! And the world fell in love with Oksana that night!
She's exquisite and magical....she captures the imagery in the music and the original ballet so well. The delicacy of the port de bras at the end work so well with the delicacy of the music.
And the open donut spin is such an interesting and original spin position, and has an angular quality that works so well with the deep emotion and vulnerability of the music.
I was happy in 1994 when she won the gold medal at the Olympics, and I am still happy about it today. However, after watching this, I think I prefer her exhibition skating over her competition skating.
Nothing less than perfect. The Swan is amazing And with Petrenko is nice!!!! I remember I loved her since the first time I saw her on ice. Great artist even so young
1994....the drama, the emotions, the tears, the beauty, the sublime..... an E P I C year in the women's ice figure skating Olympics..... a year for those who watched it all, will be just.... unforgettable.....
What a magnificent display of artistry and athleticism! Figure skating has always been my favorite Olympic sport, even though I can hardly crawl/walk on ice myself---it is a wondrous thing thing to see, as so many other wonderful accomplishments like it. I hadn't watched this performance since the original broadcast long ago---MANY THANKS FOR PROVIDING THE PUBLIC WITH THESE WONDERFUL MOMENTS OF OLYMPIC(and other events) EXCELLENCE!
I just realized that she's wearing the same dress in both routines--the second one includes a colorful little bolero top to cover the feathers! Very frugal.
I almost was thinking she was in fact performing to swan lake, because she was very balletic and that the Carnival of the Animals, happened to be a series of movements representing the animals. But when Oksana skates, I do not see her as a swan in the Carnival of the Animal just as well as I intensely see her as a swan with Tchaikovsky’s extremely powerful and gorgeous masterpiece with the opening of Swan Lake, completely engaging with her beauty. So every time I see her skating with the sound off, the first thing that comes to my mind, is I’m hearing the opening of Swan Lake orchestration of Swan Lake being conducted by Eugene Ormandy with the Philadelphia Orchestra. I’m not really kidding.
She will always be the most artistic skater I have ever seen over anyone. I just wish she wouldn't have gotten into drinking and all that that ruined her career because she was the best. I watch these old videos all the time and my daughter and I just loved her.!!
That s why OB won gold because if she wasnt best in technic (and it s not sure) she was by far best REAL artist !!.... NK was skating like a cheerleader souless.. OB was skating like a real ballerina with something more and it was a beautiful gift for all of us : Her soul when unfortunately (sorry for her fan) NK offered nothing at all
Ukrainians, revolutionary then as now! Breaking new musical ground for an exhibition in the rarified atmosphere of the Olympic ice rink by performing in a duet to a big-band-rock-n-doo-wop track!
As years go by there is always someone that takes on even more technical skills and better presentation skills. They move up and get better and better. My favorite will always be Michelle Quan. She was breathtakingly and so ever graceful. Her music was always grand.
It's hard to be around alcoholics. You never know if they are honest or lying because they are always trying to seek out the next drink. I was on a three week touring holiday with another couple and it was a disaster trying to arrange even one day tours because the husband's alcoholism was so profound. We didnt know how bad at the time, but I suspected it. He wouldn't go places if there was no alcohol to be found, and he was very clever at how he blamed other people for his every misstep along the way. He created nicknames for people or made fun of you if you were "on to him" or if you wanted to go on certain tours, ie it wasn't "cool to go" here or there. We had a six pack of beer and a bottle of wine in our hotel room for a planned social event at someone's villa. But he visited our room and he stole it all! He drank ALL that booze before dinner. I kid you not, I was looking for the beer and wine before our picnic... but it was gone. I was utterly shocked. I will never travel with an alcoholic again, they are too sneaky. Much later he had knee surgery and that was when his doctor figured out he was a liar about being so addicted to alcohol. He was in full withdrawal in the recovery room and had even begged my husband to smuggle whiskey into the hospital to "celebrate a successful surgery". His new wife was bewildered at how he was "acting goofy", and his doctors were angry that he lied on his pre-surgical forms. He was just such a smooth liar, very good looking and fun, so he always fooled people. I was the only one that saw through him so he had a habit of calling me terrible names. Like "oh here comes mother goose". Oh here comes "miss party pooper" but it was to throw people off. He eventually went into rehab but do you think it worked? I'll let you guess... he's still out there charming everyone and backstabbing ... and drinking. Even HR is on his side. One day he'll kill someone on the road and charm his way out of any culpability. He knows hes a liar, he knows he's an alcoholic but he uses people. Alcoholism is a chronic disease and is never, ever cured, it must be dealt with daily with NO enablers. I myself, never help alcoholics anymore, nor do I believe anything an alcoholic or a "recovering alcoholic" ever says. There's no such thing. It's very hard, very sad, but that is the disgusting truth about alcoholics. I'm so blessed that one cold beer is all I need, I have no desire to keep drinking. Its awful when you need to lock your alcohol cabinet when certain visitors come to your home. I had precious gifts of Polish vodkas, even a wonderful bottle of scotch as a holiday gift from a semi-famous actor whom I wont name, but only to discover they were all gone by morning with this one alcoholic guy spending the night at our home! He cleaned us out!
С балетом рядом не стояла... А с сегодняшним фигурным катанием тоже не сравнить с Трусовой, Валиевой или Липницкой. В целом отлично, но сейчас совсем другой уровень катания
