We had quite a few of these 3500 watt gen sets in our rental equipment fleet back in the 1970's. They all ran like a watch. smooth and reliable, as you said. We had a few like this one you have, then 4, 5,000 watt Kohlers with the twin cylinder engine, and a few more of the 10,000 watt sets powered by the 3 cylinder Lister Diesel Air Cooled engines. ( Man, I wish I'd kept one of those 10CM061's.) Good to watch you bring this back to life again.
@5Tractorguy
@5Tractorguy 2 года назад
Those larger units must've been heavy! Especially if they had the K series twin cylinders, those things are pretty stout engines. A 3cyl Lister generator I've never seen before though. Do come across plenty of single cylinder Listers, or ones hooked to gen heads.
@regsparkes6507
@regsparkes6507 2 года назад
@@5Tractorguy Yes, the 5,000 watt units were indeed 'weighty'. We used to put them on a small frame wit draw bar and road wheels for some of out customers. Neat packages, if I do say so. The 10CM061 ( 3 cylinder Lister powered ) were also on chassis and wheels. Our customers used them to power up on-site office trailers etc. or run ( extended run time ) for submersible pump packages.

I wonder if the valve is slightly bent? Because of the force that was put on it when it was turned over? And why it's not going back down easily? Or maybe the debri that was binding the valve has mared up the guide to the point of causing damage to the guide?

Thanks Bret! Do appreciate you sticking around... This would definitely make a slick (and quiet) off grid power source. Had a customer drop off an Onan generator that was for the same thing. CCK powered, 1800 RPM, said it was removed from an old camp. Neat unit. As for the Gravely's, keep 'em going! I'm thinking Jake, this unit was probably in a Camper at onetime. I have a 1987 Ford Econoline 26' camper. Your generator looks almost identical to what I have. I believe this ignition wire for the sparkplug was anti-spark resistance for the LP gas or propane that is easily accessible and/or a fuel source for the generator itself. I'm supposing this might be the case, as it looks identical to whats in my camper. Youre right, these Kohler engines are awesome.
@5Tractorguy
@5Tractorguy 2 года назад
Didn't even think about that Dean! That would also explain the heat activated choke, absence of electrical sockets, and the funny fan shroud. I've seen plenty of the Onan RV gens sets from back in the day, but never a Kohler (until now!).

If you aren't concerned about "all original" I've replaced that fuel pump for the reason you mentioned, with a pulse type fuel pump. I made a block off plate with a hole tapped for 1/8 pipe and mounted it {with a gasket} where the original pump went. Then installed a 45 or 90 degree pipe thread to 1/4" hose barb. Make sure the hose end points up so oil can't build up in the line. Connect that hose to the pulse input of the new fuel pump, connect the fuel lines and you are good to go. Did this on my '83 10hp Wheel Horse snow plowing machine. Works great! Keep up the great work!
@5Tractorguy
@5Tractorguy 2 года назад
Not a bad idea! I'll admit, I'm kind of an original nut when it comes to the older engines. I figured out where to get diaphragms and check valves to rebuild the old pumps so that's generally the route taken. Though those electric fuel pumps do come in handy. Have used them on a few customers machines with great success, beats the heck out of the new style vacuum pumps. Thanks Paul!
@paulravitsky2898
@paulravitsky2898 2 года назад
@@5Tractorguy I think we got some crossed hoses. I was referring to the new style vacuum pumps. I've heard horror stories about using electric fuel pumps on small engines. Probably because they didn't use a low pressure pump. The only tractors I have seen that use an electric fuel pump are my 2 80's Honda 13/14hp inline twins and they are quite large and expensive {probably 'cause of the Honda name}. Where did you find repair parts for the mechanical pumps?
@5Tractorguy
@5Tractorguy 2 года назад
@@paulravitsky2898 Thanks for clearing that up Paul! I wasn't going to harp on you for it, but I thought you meant those electric pumps... which I don't care much for. Though I did use them on a customers newer commercial mowing equipment, really don't like seeing them on the older equipment (though I understand where they work slick for your Honda). Anyways, if you search Onan 230675 on Ebay, that'll get you the diaphragm. They fit the plastic Kohler pumps, but for any of the cast aluminum Kohler/Onan/Tecumseh pumps, you'll have to punch the holes inwards about another 1/8" (smaller bolt pattern). Have used them for a few years without issue. And if you want the full kits, check out- www.then-now-auto.com/product-category/fuel-pump-kits/kohler-fuel-pump-kits/

Right, Pal, a K-series are bulletproof! Good old cast iron. It might be military because ALL their gasoline stuff had shielded ignition AND it has the reverse flow cooling like the Onan plants in a Winnie in blowing out through the flywheel shroud. Maybe a commo truck setup! I've got a 2500 watt Onan out of a Winnie and it's that way. Also had a stuck valve. I poured in some engine oil and started turning and whacking. Freed up and has been fine from then on but you know me and Delo! It better! Now it's trying to load up. Pulled the carb and it was clean. Will try it again to see. I marked TDC so both valves will be closed for storage but with the Delo I doubt anything will stick now. Get your pinkies in shape because spring is on the way and that'll mean being swamped by the wimmen! GBWYall!
@5Tractorguy
@5Tractorguy 2 года назад
Lewie, you're gonna have to 'splain what a commo truck is! I can't for the life of me figure that one out haha. Must've been some sort of specialty unit, military, motor home, some kind of hard wired deal for sure. Too bad I wasn't headed down yonder, I'd bring you my Onan BGA genset. Twin cylinder 5000W... going to be finding a new home for that now that the 'Ol Kohler is in charge. Pickin' seasons just about here! Been practicing with the bluegrass band this month, we're supposed to be recording a small album this spring. Who knows how we'll sound but hey, it'll be fun! Have to mail ya a copy when it comes off the press.
@lewiemcneely9143
@lewiemcneely9143 2 года назад
@@5Tractorguy A BIG 10/4 on the copy and a neighbor has a BGA that I've been trying to get off him for years but he won't sell and won't use it either. I'd swap you my Onan 2.5 out of a Winnie. Reversed flow cooling and runs like a swiss watch but started loading up. Carb is clean but looks like a knockoff. I'll get to it when it warms up a little. Got an old 5K Coleman with a 10 horse Briggs I/C for the 220 well pump. The Onan is 4-pole and 1800 r's. Just putters and sips. A commo truck is a Communications truck, in WW-2 was all Morse code. They were ahead of the front lines as best I can tell and my dad had some blown out from under him. Would NEVER talk about it. Mom said she knew him 6 full months before she saw him smile the 1st time. We don't have a clue about then. Glad you're bending strings. I knew you would be. That's a very cool gen set Jake! I wish the one I picked up was 1800RPM! I'm wondering if this thing may have been used in an RV or something like that with the air ducting and plumber's exhaust that on it. You are so lucky you didn't break anything with the electric start! If it was mine and I did that it would have done irreversible damage lol! Seems to run really well too! You really need to get yourself a better meter for working with generators as the output frequency is way more crucial than voltage. That being said, assuming it's running at 60Hz 134 volts isn't too unreasonable of an output voltage I dont think. I also think if you do decide to put some outlets on this thing that putting a breaker inline is always a good idea too! I'm sure if you put a nice big muffler on this thing along with a breaker and some outlets it will be quite a slick and quiet little unit!
@5Tractorguy
@5Tractorguy 2 года назад
RV seems to be the general consensus on here! That would explain the absence of plugs and the funny heat choke deal. Gotta do that lol. Planning on buying another couple meters for the garage and truck before road season hits. Keep jockeying my iffy multi meter between the shop and truck and it just ain't cutting it anymore haha. Inline breaker for sure! I think in due time this'll replace the Onan genset on a 3pt carryall I have here. Because this Kohler runs much better than that Onan (not to mention it's a heck of a lot easier to service/work on).

Jake: Watching your videos I can't help but think that you should really invest in a few cordless electrical hand tools. At least a 3/8" impact gun and an impact screw gun. You will wonder how you lived without them in a very short time. I happen to use the Milwaukee line, but any of the top name brands work fine. Another great video. Keep up the good work. And at second look at the start of the video, I think the two taped up wires sticking out of the unit are for a remote starter switch. Trace them back and see if they are connected to the starter solenoid. That is why the unit is equipped with a heat activated choke.
@lewiemcneely9143
@lewiemcneely9143 2 года назад
I'll go with the remote start and electric choke. Maybe a commo truck because it has the reverse cooling setup like an Onan in a Winnie. Hot air down through the flywheel and out the shroud.
@5Tractorguy
@5Tractorguy 2 года назад
Smith, I couldn't tell you how many people tell me the same thing haha. I probably should get with the times and pick up a set of electric impacts (we do have a lot of Milwaukee stuff here). Figure once I get a formal shop and have a place to store them/set up to charge, I'll make the investment. Cause that quonset hut I work out of is that short on room! Didn't even think of a remote starter switch! I bet your right... have to trace those wires and see where they go.
