So I've always jotted down ideas for records, and in my life I've had 3 or 4 recorders. 2 analog, 2 digital. This is the second analog one...I would basically keep 1 cassette in it and just keep recording over and over it, so theres bits of SYL, Ziltoid, Ki, Synchestra etc in any given chunk. I just hit play here for the most part, and this is what was on it. After years of re-recording, it just turns into this bleary mess, but really its just supposed to be a portable memory, so it was fine.
Usually I'll record ideas anywhere, in a bus or restroom or anything really... I have older tapes kicking around I found recently as well...haven't listened to those yet though.
Yup. Thrilling I'm sure... =)

Ah, our tape-recorders, our ''ideas' catchers'', got a zillion cassetes full of ideas, rehearsals etc. Always had one in pocket, still keep em, even destroyed, love'em. Now: digital ones - always one in pocket, not an idea missed :PP Cheers Dev

It is difficult to overestimate this thing. Ideas like the air has just been here, but has vanished. But this trap did not give them a chance to pit. Without it we do not hear a lot of great songs)))

It is funny how different ideas recorded at different moments in time end up connecting so good to each other that they create a new unique piece. Any man has ideas for songs, but forging these pieces effectively is what makes a man an artist.

Good heavens, the demo for the Greys makes it sound even more ferocious. Love that riff anyway, but hearing it stripped back like that is something else!

Holy Shit this is great! I used to have a bunch of old analog tapes with my song ideas when I was younger and their pretty nostalgic for me. Listening to this has a weird vicarious nostalgic feeling.

Cool, reminds me of all the stuff we have on 4-track of jams and riffs from the 80's-90's its totally priceless. Well worth saving 20+ years later. RECORD EVERYTHING!

Ah, that sweet analog distortion. When I was a young kid, I used 2 stereo tape decks to record multi-tracking. Omg how the noise added up. But I miss those old days of shitty analog recording. :D

I feel that I should do this with my own work. Find scribbles of tabs now and again from the past but that doesn't work out as well as a recording, I can never seem to play it right. Thanks for the idea.

How do you then take just a riff and make a song out of it? I guess that's the magic.

You immerse yourself in that riff and the feeling it gives you... You follow the feeling... You don't TRY to make something out of it or anything like that... If you find a riff that does something for you, you immerse yourself totally into that feeling and are drug along with where it takes you... You'll hear the rest in your head...

***** I've listened to everything from DTP, DTB, SYL and his purely solo stuff, include Assorted Demos 1 and 2, and I can't say I've heard either of those sections in any of his songs. There's always a chance that I've missed something, though. I hope this helps put your mind at ease about those sections.

I was listening and playing along to Infinity, and the song Truth at around 1:20 reminded me of that lick, just the sound of it, not really descending staccato part of it. Just my theory.
