Old Composer Reacts to ALIEN WEAPONRY "Kai Tangata" - The Decomposer Lounge - Reaction and Breakdown 

As a Kiwi I feel like a proud dad when I watch them. Also the ceremonial Māori challenge is called the Haka

These lads where between the ages of 16 and 18 when they did this album, the entire thing is a fucking pummelling record, highly recommend checking more of this bands stuff out. 🤘

I would like to introduce you to three boys from New Zealand, Lewis De Jong (guitar/vocals), Henry De Jong (drums/vocals) & Ethan Trembath (bass/vocals) At the time this video was done Lewis & Ethan were 16 & Henry was 18. They have won so many awards, but their most prized achievement was playing at Wacken Open Air Festival. They achieved this goal when they played on the Wasteland Stage in 2018 (Henry was 18, Lewis & Ethan were 16). The reviews of that festival praised these 3 boys as one of the top acts to play that year & the best to ever play on the Wasteland stage. They formed the band when Lewis was 8 & Henry was 10 in 2010. I believe Ethan joined the band in 2012 when he was 12. I would suggest "Ru Ana Te Whenua" with the closed caption turned on. The rhythm of the song makes a whole lot more sense if you understand what they are singing. So many other reactors have not done so & are very confused by the rhythm. I would also suggest "Hypocrite", the video is in english & shows how young they were when they did this song. Lewis & Ethan were 12 & Henry was 14. If you really enjoy this band, might I suggest that you take a look at some of the documentaries done about them, because of their youth, their talent & their use of the Maori language. The wind sound comes from the Pūrerehua. It can be made of bone, wood or stone, they are blade-like and swing on a long cord producing a loud, deep whirling that can be heard from a distance. A rapid spinning motion will start the music of the Purerehua'a song as it rotates and flutters. Uses vary from luring lizards, summoning rain, communicating and attracting a soul mate

These guys opened the main stage on either the Saturday or Sunday at Download Festival in the UK one year. There must've been about 1,000 hung-over people just wandering around the main arena, then these unknown, skinny little while kids just took to the stage and unleashed THIS. A thousand jaws just dropped, and a midday moshpit broke out. It was absolutely epic.

Love this band. They always reminded me of Roots era Sepultura.

Alien Weaponry is from New Zealand and this song is sung in Maori

One of the awesome things about te reo Māori as a language, re music, is that every word ends in a vowel, so it just sings SO well.

Have seen these guys in Australia. You really don't get their awesome power off of a recording. They're brutal live.

Great choice. Have to say that because I am a Kiwi. All about a legendary battle between two warring Maori tribes. One of which was ruled by cannibal chieftainesses. Don't bring a Taiaha to a Musket fight would be the lesson here. I like these guys because they are very melodic while being kick-ass. The instrument you were correctly describing that makes that humming wind sound is a Purerehua.

Saw an interview of those lads- really young but very respectful about where they come and the Maori culture. A great export from New Zealand. Great song!!

Hey Geebz, the thing you reference in the song is called a bullroarer, rhombus, or turndun. The one used here would be a pūrerehua, it is a traditional Māori bullroarer, they were used for healing or making rain

Couldn’t believe how young these kids were when I first heard this. Such a powerful sound and message, especially from such a young group.

These guys are INSANELY talented. I caught their set at Download 2019 in Sydney. Let me tell you, I have never seen a bunch of kids look so comfortable on such a large stage with a crowd like that. Definitely got a long career ahead of them should they choose.

Thier father was their producer for a long time. Oh the most direct/literal translation of Kai Tahgata is "food people" or "eat[ing] people" The whole story of this video is about Tūmatauenga a wargod... The video actually tells part of the story. One tribe got guns from the British and used them to hunt down opponents.

That instrument that makes the humming sound is called a Purerehua. It is swung around in a circle to make that sound. You may have heard it in relation to the film "Once Were Warriors", it was used in the trailer. These guys are fantastic and its great to see them taking the Maori language to a wider audience.

The "whirry thing" - I believe you are referring to the Bullroarer, which is indeed a wooden disc attached to a string and makes a whirring noise when spun around. It's an Australian Aboriginal instrument. Well, signalling tool. Funny story, I found Alien Weaponry after listening to The Hu and wondering about other culturally inspired metal. Couldn't find much Aussie stuff, but when I searched for Maori metal, well...

I think you're right on the drums standing out in particular. This record was produced by a guy called Tom Larkin, who he himself is a very accomplished drummer for one of New Zealand's biggest bands, Shihad. So I guess its not surprising that the drums have such presence.

Hey Geebez, glad you finally got this, that noise you heard is a Māori wind instrument called a Pūrerehua, you can see a demonstration of how it works here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xLWcyk8wRqE.html The song is a war chant, and the boys ancestors were part of the battle they were depicting in the video - they also had family members in the video. They ate their enemies to dishonour them, which is what the song title means. The repeating part you heard in the chorus translates to 'This is the work of Tūmatauenga' - who is the Māori god of war.

I believe the boys were 15 and 17 when they recorded the album, and 16 and 18 when the video was done. I've had the pleasure of seeing them live, and they are very good. I'm lad yo finally did these guys, I think it might have been me that suggested them back in December. Shepherds Reign is a Samoan band from New Zealand who also sing songs in Samoan and incorporate their culture into their music.

The drummers fills on the chorus as so damn TASTY! More people should take note; sometimes, less is more. It reminds me of GOJIRA - Flying Whales (the use of toms/floor toms for fills or on the off beats). So addictive to listen to xD 🤘🤘

That's why I love ambient music, particularly from the likes of Carbon based Lifeforms, Astropilot, and Unusual Cosmic Process. It puts into perspective the emotions, ambitions, and energy of not only humanity but every species that has struggled in the eons that have passed on our planet, and even beyond into the cosmos. Kind of like the ocean.

Glad that you got around to this song; the instrument you're thinking of is a bullroarer. It's over 20,000 years old - being used from Africa, through Ancient Greece and into the Americas. It's used prominently here in Australia - among the Aboriginals - and yes, even back in my homeland of New Zealand.

The best thing about Alien Weaponry is they absolute pull this off live with amazing energy. Saw them live late last year here in Wellington NZ and got to hear a few of their new unreleased songs live and they were totally badass!

Check out Heilung's song Krigsgaldr from their album Lifa. They hit on a lot of the cultural notes you touched on. They call their music "amplified history" and use instruments and costuming to reflect their ancestors and ancient origins. Their music is all based off ancient Scandinavian stone carvings or the old eddas etc. Knowing your spiritual leanings I think youd really dig them. That and their music is out of this world and unlike anything else ive ever heard. Thanks for the videos Geeb I look forward to em for my breaks at work every day, they really help me mellow out on stressful days !

Congrats on the upcoming anniversary! As per your instructions, I'll recommend one of their newest songs off latest album Tangaroa (the title track Tangaroa!) but here's a few other recommendations of Kiwi bands I've also seen live a bunch of times and love! Hopefully they also get on your radar 😉 Jakob (e.g. Blind Them With Science, Malachite) - three piece with no vocals, have opened for Tool when they play NZ and have very atmospheric loopy layered slow build songs that build to a crescendo and just get you into a spacy mindset! Beastwars (e.g. Damn The Sky, Lake Of Fire) - a bunch of grizzled old fullahs with CHONKY vocals and riffs... Obey The Riff is their motto! Shihad (e.g. My Minds Sedate, Think You're So Free) - NZs most iconic rock band, started heavy, veered into pop rock, but have come back heavy and always kill it live! Decortica (e.g. Ennui, Eros) - these guys are like the dark dirty version of Muse and one of my favourite live bands I've seen in NZ. Singers side project Domes (e.g. Malady) is pretty damn cool but released just before Covid so never got to see live. Cairo Knife Fight (e.g. Big Face, Origin of Slaves) - two piece where they both sing, they both use loops on everything they play, guitar drums and bass (drum plays bass synth on his spare hand hah!), very cool high energy groovy rock. Unfortunately original guitarist recently passed away but new form of band with former Black Eyed Peas guitarist has been making new music in last few years in US, and he has a very crunchy in your face style.

I'd like to hear you decompose Rammstein, but not the obvious Du Hast. "Rosenrot" or "Mutter" would be interesting aurally for sure! For chant-like vocals in particular, I recommend Slugdge - The Spectral Burrows, and Apocalypse Orchestra - The Garden of Earthly Delights.

Totally different dynamic, but when you talk about that visceral ancestral connection it makes me think of Eivør’s Trøllabundin. Always cuts straight through my soul when I hear it. Especially the live outdoor version she did. And yes, it’s the bullroarer you’re thinking of.
