Arch enemy is a great band that I haven't taken my due time to go through completely, but Jeff Loomis, who is the blonde haired king playing guitar in this video, was in a band called nevermore for many years before he joined arch enemy. They are an absolute must listen. Dead Heart in a Dead World is a classic progressive metal album.

Check out Arch Enemy's song Nemesis. Angela Gossow has the gnarliest metal growl.

I love Arch Enemy! Saw them live in 2004 when Angela Gossow was the lead vocalist. Super sweet gal but a total demon on stage, wow! This band helped me get through some super tough times as a teenager and in my early twenties. Thank you for giving them a go here, Geebz.

OMG Geebz thank you so much for doing that song. Hope you truly enjoyed the suggestion. Alissa White-Gluz is actually from Montreal and i had the chance to go see them live....what a performance. As for the keyboard, it's a track pre-recorded by the drummer Daniel Erlandsson. Also if you want a very different song from them, their very first ever ballad, Reason to Believe.

You really should check out 'War Eternal' and/or 'Nemesis' from Arch Enemy. For both there is also a music video and a great live performance video at the Wacken festival ... your choice ;)

One of my favorite parts of AE (and Melodic Death in general) is how they move the melodic line off the voice, but keep it present in the music. It's a lifeline through the music while they turn the voice into much more of a rhythm instrument. Also, I personally prefer women screamers to men as they can be a bit more intelligible -- Once Human and Frantic Amber are other great ones to check out. Also, check out Nemesis or Ravenous from Arch Enemy to get a feel for Angela Gossow. Angela is a false chord screamer, as opposed to a fry screamer (Alissa). She's a bit harder to understand and can't do quite as long phrases as Alissa, but she is just ridiculously powerful and has amazing resonance (the trade-offs of false chord vs. fry screaming). She's stopped performing full time to start a family and hired Alissa to replace her while she (Angela) manages the band. She did come back recently for a feature with Amaranth (who she also manages) on "Do or Die", and she 100% still has "it".

Seeing Jeff Loomis reminds me, you should check out Nevermore for some decomposing! :D I suggest Engines of Hate, Born or We Disintegrate for a good intro to the band

It's called melodic death metal for a reason. The melodic part really is what makes the genre work for me. Lots of others have suggested more by Arch Enemy or The Agonist. I would like to recommend Be'lakor and Countless Skies. Australian and British melo-death respectively. Both really work best with a studio recording, don't go straight to live. They got a progressive edge and you gotta enjoy the composition here.

This is why your channel is so great for the "pure listener". Even if you don't like growling, you learn to appreciate the musicians and the music a little bit as you dig into it.

Arch Enemy only does the growling vocals if you want to hear their current singer Alissa White-Gluz's vocal range check out her former band The Agonist where she sang growling and clean vocals she is a really talented vocalist.

A great choice for the live perfomance side of Arch Enemy is the early Tyrants of the Rising Sun tour version of "Nemesis" live in Tokyo 2008 with their former singer Angela Gossow who retired from the band officially and still manages them. She is one of the great first generation of female growlers and had a huuuge impact on (esp. female) death metal vocals thereafter. I don't actually know if they use slight key or guitar layer backing tracks live today, like Jinjer and many many others (nothing bad at all, you have to be good to use them live anyways), but at that point in time it was pretty pure - 2 guitars, bass, drums, vocals. Still fantastic. One of the best live performances I have seen - no matter what genre. And that was the last song of their set, yet the performance and the energy of band and audience is unbelievable.

Now that we had Arch Enemy it would be cool to visit other melodic death metal bands: In Flames (songs: Moonshield, Pinball Map, Cloud Connected, Deliver Us, I Am Above), Dark Tranquility (Atoma, Forward Momentum) , At The Gates (Slaughter of the Soul). Not directly melodic death metal, but swedish: Avatar would also be really cool, for example "A secret door" or "The eagle has landed". Love your videos!

I´m not so big fan of this particular genre, but Arch Enemy is class ! You just can´t ignore those delicious hooks they put in their songs. No one does that better. This is quite good example of what makes Arch Enemy tick, that chorus sticks in your head and stays there :-)

They have amazing melodies in their music, Arch Enemy is from the Swedish Melodic Death Metal scene they are one of the Best. Michael Amott one of the lead and rhythm guitarists and the founding member used to be in the band Carcass. His younger brother Christopher Amott used to be in the band, but he quit and now one of my favorite guitarists Jeff Loomis took his place in the band.

Jeff Loomis their guitarist used to be in an amazing band called Nevermore, highly suggest the songs This Godless Endeavour or Enemies of Reality. Some amazing work. Also, if you're looking toward some melodic metal, Children of Bodom should be on your list. Their song Kissing the Shadows has possibly some of the best solos out there which is even more amazing as the lead singer/ guitarist was only about 21 when they wrote the album. He sadly passed at the end of last year aged only 41 and it was a devastating loss to the metal community. He inspired so many. RIP Alexi Laiho

I'm happy that you reacted to AE. In the past Alissa used to sing in "The Agonist" band. She was mixing clean vocal and scream techniques a lot. If you're interested you can check old The Agonist songs like "thank you pain" :) Also, Alissa sang in "METAL ALLEGIANCE - We Rock" (Originally it's Dio song). which I strongly recommend to listen. You can find a video when she was singing with Nightwish (maybe once as a replacement but it happened :P) Hmm... she was also use to sing Kamelot band... So many good songs to recommend with her :)

arch enemy was another band that got me back into metal, back then their singer was one Angela Gossow that was already a legend for being one of the first women to do growling vocals, and the band was on the top of the Melodic Death Metal scene, other band that is super hook-happy on the same vein that I think you'd enjoy decomposing is Be'lakor, their album Stone's Reach was one that stayed in my playlist for a long while. Their remaster version is great too to talk about their engineering choices.

This genre, melodic death metal, was a big part of a certain time in my life (nothing bad). I had just dropped out of college and got a job at Geek Squad where there was a huge metal head working. The store opened at 10am but he and I would typically get there at 7am to start fixing computers so for three hours we would have Pandora just blasting since there were only a couple other people in the store. Before, the only metal I knew was Avenged Sevenfold but my coworker, Ryan, got me in to In Flames and other bands and I fell in love and went wild. For a good year or two this is the only music I listened to. In Flames, Dark Tranquility, Insomnium, Amon Amarth, Soilwork, Disarmonia Mundi, Sonic Syndicate (now called The Unguided), Blinded Colony, and so many others. I don't listen to any of those bands nearly as much anymore (I'm more of a prog guy now), but when I do I can't not think about Geek Squad and playing World of Warcraft (I was playing about eight hours a day back then all while jamming to that music nonstop). It was fun times for sure, that time in between school and "real life" aka "adulting".

Awesome reaction. Regarding the melody. It’s very common for melodic death metal but Arch Enemy are well known for beautiful melodies. They build most of their songs around an amazing melody.. You will see what I mean if you try pretty much any of their tracks. Perhaps try Dead Eyes see no future or Enemy Within!! Thanks again ❤️

Amott and Loomis are 2 of the best guitarist around. Agree with many others in the comments, you should check out Arch Enemy with Angela on vocals, particularly Ravenous. And definitely try Nevermore, either The River Dragon has come or the Heart Collector, Warrel Dane had one of the best, most unique metal voices.

Hmmm - interesting you've gone for some of the later work with Alissa. I grew up with Angela era Arch Enemy - I'd love to see some 'classic' tracks like Fields of Desolation, Nemesis, My Apocalypse, We will Rise, Revolution Begins, Blood on your hands, Vultures, Bloodstained Cross, Yesterday is dead and gone, No gods no masters etc. What makes Arch Enemy for me is that blend between aggressive, ugly and breakneck riffs in the verse and breakdown sections with soaring melody and harmonies in the choruses and solos. I'd also recommend Alissas old band 'The Agonist' - particularly Buisness suits & Combat boots, Thankyou Pain, And their eulogies sang me to sleep and Birds Elope with the sun.

You are really running the gamut of genres day to day, and I love it! If you're up for looking at something a little peeled down, I'm really curious to hear what you think about '68, a 2-piece rock duo, with a lot of guitar pedal work to keep the sound frequencies filled up. Some notable songs by '68 are "Life is Old, New, Borrowed and Blue", "The Workers are Few", and a newer one of theirs with a super cool video is "Bad Bite". Thanks for the vids as always!

Arch Enemy is still flying the flag of Melodic Death Metal to this day and for good reason: their songs in a sense are very traditional: verse chorus verse chorus solo chorus stuff. And I do mean hooks: they almost never do clean vocals or keyboards yet their chorus parts are very memorable because of those guitar melodies while the vocals follow the tradition of death metal of giving you the lyrics, rhythm and distortion but not actual vocal melodies. But if this band has persisted as one of the top bands being this seemingly aggressive is mostly because the instrumentation choices don't take away from their very approachable song structure and composition. EDIT: Also as far as I'm aware they have no official keyboard player: they just have the samples and I think Daniel (Their drummer) just triggers them to go with the song click but to the P.A. There's lost of metal bands that do this for tours and works relatively well.

An interesting thing about this song is that the middle section with that cool, heavy tremolo picked riff (that leads in to the whispering section). Is in a different tuning than the rest of the song. Not sure how they pull this part off live, but there is a dropout for a few seconds before that riff starts so maybe Amott just switches guitars. Either way it allows for a really cool sounding riff. Not something you can do often, but it the music allows for it, presents some pretty cool options.

Arch Enemy do use strings/pads etc quite a bit. If you want to hear one of their best uses have a listen to Time Is Black. The string sections in that sound like a Bond theme.

The vocalist 'Lauren Hart' is so powerful, & their sound is like Arch Enemy meets Machine Head and so interesting! So highly recommend! Talking about growling metal singing that we actually understand the words....Mikael Åkerfeldt from my thumbnail is one.

Now that you’ve heard Jeff loomis play, you need to hear some things that Jeff loomis has written. You need to react to the band nevermore. I’d recommend starting off with the song This Godless Endeavor. It’s one of my favorites. You could also listen to something off of Dead Heart in a Dead World like others have suggested. Edit: Their vocalist, Warrel Dane had a pretty unique voice for the genre. Warrel and Jeff really paired together well in their sound.

In Melodic Death Metal, a really great band to check out, with insanely good instrumentation, is Mors Principium Est. Their last album, Seven, is full of amazingly well written songs. Andy Gillion, the guitarist and composer for the band, also has solo material that is incredible. It would be awesome if you could check out either of those!

Check out their songs Reason to Believe and Avalanche to get a hint of Alissa's cleans (only background in the latter, but it's a good song to check out in terms of layering in the production). Arch Enemy has traditionally never used clean vocals, particularly with their first couple singers, but Alissa is too good of a singer for them to not take advantage of that skill. Her cleans shine more in her other projects. You should also check out Arch Enemy songs with their first iconic female vocalist, Angela Gossow. She honestly has one of the most powerful growls ever! Nemesis is my favourite song from that era, and it's also filled with hook bombs :D
