The idea that Disney turned a rated r comedy into a family film is freaking hilarious to me , It's pretty much the same thing that to happen to Kangaroo jack.
Ever see the Robin Williams and Elmo outtake? He makes an adult-ish joke about Madonna and lingerie out of habit and then walks it back saying something to the extent of "no this is a kid's show." No doubt there's accidental R-rated cuts. The dude even tried to sneak Elmer Fudd into Disney's Aladdin.
Fun fact: Robin improvised so much material in Mrs. Doubtfire that there was enough footage to release a G, PG, R, and even a NC-17 rated cut of the movie.
Its so funny to me I grew up in an era where I only knew him for his PG kids movie work and now I realize he was well known for doing super raunchy comedy lol
@@sunsetman22 Such is the case with Thomas and the Magic Railroad. Poor test screenings led to PT Boomer, the original villain getting taken out, and Percy and James's voices being recast with girls!
I remember when Robin Williams died we went to the one of the few Ma & Pa Video stores left and there was a giant display of Williams movies to rent. Only Old Dogs was untouched
I remember going to a video store right around the time Robin Williams passed away and the guy working there offered me Old Dogs for free after I rented Bicentennial Man and Flubber. I told him I didn't want Old Dogs and if Old Dogs touched my rentals I would hurt him
@@thursoberwick1948 I don't think a lot of directors knew how to utilize his talent and that's why he starred in some awful movies. Usually he was the highlight of even the crappiest movies
This "forgotten failures" series is like a curated list of my parents' favourite comedy films lmao. All the films we spent high school family evenings rotting our brains to
"Let's make a movie where the entire joke is that the two central characters are constantly assumed to be gay, but keep it clean for the kids!" Yeah, great idea.
I remember that one clip being shown constantly in a lot of TV ads for this movie at the time, so that one part of the movie is kind of a repressed memory of sorts for me.
My guess. It was originally shot to be PG13. Had one joke that made it R because the MPAA is weird. Then when trimming they decided to go all the way to PG
@@calipurnioelreydelodio7141 I hate to ask, but what does this have to do with BoyNamedSue’s original comment? Yes, the MPAA hands out NC-17 ratings for language. They did that with South Park as well. Now what does that have to do with Disney deciding to take a mild ‘R’ and saying, “okay, let’s make it a family flick instead. PG. Let’s not even go PG-13. More parents will take their wee little ones to this as a PG movie only. And while we’re at it, change the name from Old Dads to, get this, wait for it, Old DOGS! Yep, uh huh. Dogs, rhymes with that tool man’s Dogs movie or whatever. We boy, that’s a good one. While you’re at it, throw in an old dog too. That’ll be funny. Crack the kids up. Hehe, old DOG……. (Mild laughing from dumb exec fades out)
@@tarantinoish what is your point? The MPAA handed out NC-17 to South Park for a few things they needed to trim out to get the R rating, that looked like you were onto something and totally missed it with only two sentences. The paragraph after actually adds to Calipurnio, el Rey del Odio's point rather than against it lol
In my mind, this and Wild Hogs have always just melded together into one movie, basically a Mandela effect. This video honestly blew my mind when I realized they were two separate movies.
Based on the trailers, it felt like Disney knew this film would fail. The majority of the trailers consisted of the camp scene and the gorilla scene, which amount to 5% of the entire film. When we saw it in theatres, we were shocked in the brevity of those scenes and realized that Disney marketing milked what they felt were the funniest parts of the film, as short as they were. In a way, it was a wise decision because the drab interiors, golf club scene, and restaurant settings make zero sense outside of their context and do not look appealing. They definitely struggled to convey the film's premise through its marketing, and leaving the child actors out of most of the marketing of a children's movie is rather telling.
This was also the last time Williams had the leading (I repeat LEADING) role in a mainstream film. This movie basically killed his status on the A-list.
@@ferociousgumby might just be me, but he's always looked this way in my eyes. and I don't mean that in a mean-spirited way. he's always had this sad, melancholic look about him, especially in the eyes. even when he was at his funniest and making the entire room light up, there was still a palpable sense of sadness to him. again, might just be hindsight playing tricks on me, but still. I'm no mental health expert and I certainly didn't know the man personally, but I kind of saw it coming in a way. may he rest in peace.
@@sunsetman22 They say all the greatest clowns had broken hearts. Seems to be true that the people who make us laugh often have painful lives. Jonathan Winters and John Candy come to mind, and then there are the John Belushi/Chris Farley wild and crazy type who one day just self-destruct. Robin Williams was almost wasted in comedy - his dramatic performances were low-key but superb (Goodwill Hunting, Dead Poets Society, and especially Awakenings - Oliver Sacks was on the set during filming and was astonished at the way Williams replicated his character.)
Travolta doing these types of family movies, has always felt off to me. At least anything that's not "Look whose talking". I can't put my finger on why tho
Because he's a rabid Scientologist who refuses to get his family medical treatments when they need them? That would make me feel uncomfortable about him being in "family friendly" films. Guy's a creep.
They've put Travolta in so many movies to die. It's sad. He's a likable guy and a good actor. He's great in that OJ Simpson show. That's one of the best acting jobs, & one of the best shows/movies he's ever been part of.
You should follow this up with a movie that is the COMPLETE opposite of this film, with an almost similar premise, Father's Day, starring Robin Williams and Billy Crystal.
Father's Day is exactly in the same vein of, 'not bad but didn't live up to it's potential'. Often over-looked and forgotten. As a Beatles fan I will always have a soft spot for Fathers Day as it was used as a vehicle to promote Paul McCartney's then new album. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-H1VgAWA2OzY.html
14:20 To be fair, functional jet packs capable of flight have existed since the ‘60s, they’re just not widely available, as well as being wildly impractical (only able to operate for a few minutes). I first saw one in action during the opening ceremony of the 1984 Olympics. Pretty cool, but you’re right, it doesn’t need to be in this movie.
I first saw it on the '70s live action Saturday morning kids' show "Ark II," in which a group of scientist kids and a monkey traveled a post-apocalyptic wasteland in a futuristic van. They had a jetpack they would use for scouting and such.
@@noneofyourbusiness4616 Oh wow, i remember Ark II but forgot there was a jet pack in it 😳 I guess cuz everything on that show registered as “futuristic sci-fi” in my brain so the jet pack didn’t seem “real world” til i saw it during the Olympics 🤔 Sounds plausible anyway 😄
@@Gappasaurus I only remember the jet pack in Ark II because when I looked up the show awhile back on RU-vid they show it in the opening credits sequence!
I don't know if I agree that every childless man is hiding some dramatic backstory. Some people just don't want kids, and it doesn't get any deeper than that.
@@slinky6481 It can when they "inherit" children, i.e. from a close relative who dies. I don't have any kids but I do have a god daughter, and that's not the same.
Yeah, as someone who has kids I wish I didn’t have kids. That’s like the ultimate male dream. Rich, kidless and sleeping with women 20 years younger than you
Wild Hogs was like the Hangover for me, saw it in theaters with no expectations and laughed my butt off; rented it when it came out on video and was like how did I ever find this funny?
I saw Old Dogs in the theater when I was 10 years old and it is still the hardest I’ve ever laughed at any movie ever. I’ll never let y’all take this from me🤣
If a piece of media meant to make you laugh made you laugh, then it achieved it's purpose. Why should you need to apologize for that? WE'RE the weird ones for watching a video about a movie we didn't really like to begin with.
Oh okay. I was going to contend that this wasn't forgotten, but when I read the title I was actually thinking of Wild Hogs. I only very vaguely remember this.
i remember watching it during the same week when Robin Williams has passed away as a memoriam for him alongside many other's of his movies and featured farewell tweets of his colleagues onscreen
I love seeing Fr Ted fans outside of Ireland. Probably the best Irish TV shows. It's still very relevant in Irish culture and quoted endlessly. R.I.P Dermot Morgan and Frank Kelly. Absolute legends!
Evolution is underrated by the way. Even if the CG hasn’t aged that good and it’s a bit too similar to Ivan Reitman’s first two Ghostbusters only with alien creatures.
I agree. It was on recently and I laughed so hard at "let's shampoo us some aliens line". So what if some of it didn't age as gracefully as other movies
@@bradwolf07 even got a short lived cartoon spin-off sequel during Fox Kids’ dying days airing around the same time as Mon Colle Knights. Still better than the TV spin-off/prequels Hotel Transylvania and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs got.
...y'know...if the movie was just a dad being taught by a famous kids entertainer how to BE a dad, there'd be something to that...I really think it could've worked well!
What I remember the most is the scene of the pill swap, as a child I was so conscious that I could actually kill someone by doing so, up to a point I am traumatize by that, so when I sort my great aunt's pills I always double check everything is correct otherwise they could end up with a Joker grin like Travolta, or dying of an overdose, sad and what a terrible feeling to associate with a comedy.
that was a thing for awhile in the 2000s where a movie that was supposed to be adult oriented was repurposed into a family movie. Kangaroo Jack was supposed to be a gritty mafia movie set in australia and it was just completely pivoted.
9:42 Makes me happy that Americans are discovering this gem of a show. In Ireland, if you quote a line to anyone on the streets, they instantly know what you’re talking about.
@@ThomasSpychalski It’s not that well known among the general public. When it comes to modern Channel 4 comedies, Derry Girls is the one that’s popular over here. Hell, they got their own mural in Derry City.
I didn't know there was going to be a Wild Hogs sequel. I like to see would that would had looked like. I love and miss you Robin we all do. You made us laugh and cried.
Completely forgot about this movie. Didn't even remember I actually saw it until it got to the hand model scene where her hands got crushed by the car trunk.
I just realized you have over 100,000 subscribers! As someone who's been following you since you first put out your Gene Wilder video, that's incredible to see. Keep up the good work Joe!
Your comment to the effect that it is a sad swan song for three talents reminds me of Peter Sellers death. "Being There" would have been THE movie to go out on, rather than the lamentable "Fiendish Plot of Fu Manchu".
Ngl my Grandma and I watched this when I was like 8 and we actually both loved it and whenever she’d come over and we’d have nothing to watch she’d say “wanna watch Old Dogs?” And we watched it probably about once a year up till I was 11. Even tho it’s bad it still has a soft spot in my heart.
i grew up watching and dying laughing at old dogs so this was a super pleasant surprise seeing this pop up on my recommended. i’ll always love this movie bc of childhood nostalgia. the nub nub scene always kills me.
This movie takes me back so much, me and my gma went and saw this in theaters and we laughed so hard! It’s crazy how fast life moved forward because back then I thought I was gonna be young forever and now I’m about to turn 22 and while that’s still young, it feels crazy that 22 years have passed since I was born and in that time so much has happened 🙏 good and bad! Thank you for the trip down memory lane
I always wanted to watch this. I was fascinated by the concept and seeing Williams and Travolta together in a movie seemed like it could be a nice surprise. I may check it out. Great video dude , you've been killing it with these videos lately! You should talk about Monkeybone , that movie is bizarre.
For years I remembered that scene with the pill switching, it was so strange and disturbing to a child me that I thought it was a dream. Thanks for unearthing that
The story of Old Dogs being an R Rated comedy is similar to what happened with Kangaroo Jack. Btw, I wonder what your thoughts on the Whitest Kids U’Know film “Miss March?” Although, giving recent events, now’s probably not the right time to talk about it
@@rayluna1432 Kangaroo Jack was originally a PG-13 crime comedy. I don't remember if Kangaroo Jack was even a character in that early version, but Warner turned it into a family movie.
Have never heard of Miss March. Would talking about it now, be considered offensive, or some thing? If so, why?? Kangaroo Jack was & still is a piece of shit.
I miss Robin Williams man. He was such an rich human being. It’s sad the way he went out. Poor guy! I have so many memories watching his movies throughout my life tho, I’ll always remember him.
Dude!!! Killing it with the father Ted reference!! You must have lived with u.k. parents or grandparents too!! Awesome 👌 only other person who has ever mentioned that show in my life!!! P.s. sorry for all the (!!!!) I was legit excited.
I remember when this movie was being marketed. I don't remember the ads that much, but I remember the name. I also think I saw it when it became available to rent, but I don't remember it well. If I did, than it was over a decade ago, and it didn't leave a lasting impact on me. When I found out this movie was super hated, I thought it was just your typical case of a movie being hated because it was incredibly unfunny. I had no idea until now that the film had an incredibly interesting backstory.
Saw this film when I was a teen & I absolutely loved it. Made me laugh so hard. But I'm never gonna rewatch it as an adult. Cause it probably isn't THAT great & my tastes as a teen were mostly sh*t. 😂
