That's what a Cadbury Crunchie is and the reason I got into making honeycomb candy. Old fashioned puff candy is the name my home state of Massachusetts gave it. Alot of different regions, countries and states have variations with little tweaks to the recipe, all just as tasty as the one before with a different name. Edit Cadbury Crunchie's are from Ireland. I buy mine at a convenience store in Charlestown, Boston, MA

Could it be put in silicone molds instead? I’m thinking it would be easier to get out because the silicone allows you to push it out since it’s not rigid….also it would form it so you don’t have to break it and have irregular chunks…so just wondering if you ever tried silicone molds?

Same here I have never heard of it being chewy or sticky. But the consistency it's always been when I had it was kind of like floral foam like so airy and not at all hard or sticky like hard candy more like dried bread crumbs..., crumby and should be texture wise nothing like butterfinger or hard nor sticky.

Yes, I have had sponge candy many times. I live in western NY and it's available at 2 chocolate shoppe's in my town. I always buy several packages and send them out to relatives and friends for Christmas. I might try to make it myself using your recipe...it would be cheaper. :)

That is the exact recipe my sister uses here in Western NY ( I’m from Buffalo). She had it down to a science. But it shouldn’t be sticky or stick to your teeth. It should be very airy with a crunch and basically melt in your mouth. Someone mentioned the texture of being like “floral foam” and I would say that’s an accurate analogy. All of our local candy shops sell it. It’s generally only made in the cold months ( has to do with humidity, I think) ands it’s ALWAYS cut in squares and dipped in chocolate. I tried it years ago with her when she first got the recipe and ours would puff up and then slightly collapse giving us a harder, stickier consistency, more like what you made. After multiple tries I gave up. She made it the next Xmas with the person who gave her the recipe and she learned the little tricks of the trade from her, or whatever to get it just right because she’s been nailing it for the last 20 yrs. It delicious! Good try and as long as you enjoy it that’s all that matters!

I grew up in Chicago in the 40’s and 50’s. It was sold in rectangular blocks about the size of a small brick wrapped in cellophane. It was very light and never chewy or sticky. My mother would cut small chunks off with a sharp knife and the pieces would dissolve as soon as I put them in my mouth. I tried making it about 25 years ago, and it was pretty good, but never quite as good as the sponge candy we had in Chicago.

The problem with the Fleet Farm seafoam candy is that they cost it in chocolate "flavor" instead of real chocolate. It used to be real chocolate but that changed many years ago. Many are like that now. I always check the label on any I see sold to verify before I buy it. When it's coated in chocolate flavor it spoils it for me!

Top tip for cleaning out candy pans - fill the pan with water and put it back on the heat. As the water boils, it will dissolve the hardened sugar/candy and make cleaning the pan a breeze. So much easier! We call this honeycomb in the UK (or I've also heard it called cinder toffee). We have a chocolate bar made by Cadbury's that is this covered in milk chocolate and it's delicious! Quite a few people in my family likes that candy. My husband and step kids love it. He gets it from the oldest candy shop in Salem Ma. They usually only have it during the colder months though because it doesn't do well in the heat. They sell candy bars in the UK called Crunchie by Cadbury that are covered in chocolate. I get those for my husband as a treat sometimes. I know I could try to make it at home but I know it's going to be messy and I will need to get a non-stick pot for it since I don't have one.

This was always a treat to look forward to around Christmas time. When I was young my Great Aunt was a farmers wife n Nine-O-Clock coffee used to be a home delivered service, along with other essentials Angel Food candy was one of them dipped in chocolate, you couldn't buy it anywhere else. I always wondered how it was made. It was thicker than your version so I will have to play with it. My siblings will just be, aw struck. I don't think I can wait til Xmas though😋
