The biggest fear most people have with using an OLED monitor as their primary display is the ever-dreaded burn in effect. For those that don’t know, burn in is when the microscopic LEDs that make up an organic light emitting display end up showing the same thing on screen for a long enough time - say a Windows taskbar or game HUD for example - the LEDs wear down such that no matter what they are showing, they have the silhouette of the burned-in content. It is one of the biggest drawbacks when it comes to an OLED panel, and is something that people are somewhat rightfully afraid of when it comes to using an OLED especially for your primary display. But actually, are you right to be afraid?

6:23 umm, no they don't use "pretty standard RGB pixel layout". They use triangular RGB pattern which still causes text rendering issues.

LCDs equvilant is the backlight dimming over time; with them being LED now you could end up with a blotchy screen if one or 2 backlight LEDs failed. I'm not entirely sure but I think part of whats going on in Oleds is that those burned in pixels get extra electricity to compensate instead of bringing the entire panel brightness down... it could be both depending on the manufacturer.

I have a panasonic oled TV that i sometimes use for PC gaming and very regular XBOX gaming, haven't had any problems yet and i use it for many hours daily. That said, i have always been careful; and have all the recommended settings on. Hide taskbar/screensaver/ and such.

Have mine aw 3423dwf for almost a year now. Daily excel, email, browser stuff 8-9h a day and 2-3h of gamin/movies. No sight of burning and experience is awesome. Your call, but you are missing out a lot.

My biggest fear is pixel degradation, which kind of goes along with burn-in I guess. The "organic" part of LED just brings it too close to plasma for my liking I guess.

If QD uses light frequency to make the kmage brighter. Why not just use it on LCD panels? OLED to my knowledge is not actually emitting special light. QD LCD with full micro LED backlight (per-pixel not like we see today when they say "full-array" what a joke that is).

@@VariantAEC I'm using an LCD panel currently that utilizes QD tech, the Samsung CF791 VA QD LCD from 2017. As far as I'm aware, my monitor uses the QD tech to improve color. VA LCD panels don't usually have the most vibrant colors but that's not the case with the CF791. It's one of the reasons I went with it. It was a good compromise between color and contrast. OLED monitors weren't a market back then and this was the closest to it. I'm due for an upgrade, micro LED is still not there, and QD OLED seems very promising but I don't want to jump in just yet. I remember one of the smaller TV manufacturers a few years back showed off a TV where they used an LCD panel as a backlight to get very good per pixel lighting in an LCD display. It was basically a 1080p LCD in the back and a 4K LCD in the front. It had pretty crazy level of local dimming for an LCD, basically 2 million dimming zones on a 4K LCD tv. I guess they never figured out mass production of it as I've not heard anything since.

My C1 already did the first automatic wear levelling. 2000hrs. I'm approx 2500hrs on time, all on PC. My browser bookmark icons a bit visible with light background. Nothing crazy, but you can see it. I'm not going to do manual levelling. I don't want to accelerate the wear my self...

All oled screen phones i had suffered burn it starting with samsung s7, very bad ussually seen on white background ... considering how much a monitor costs and no option to replace the screen like in phones... no thank you! And we all agree oled is adictive... once you taste you are hooked!

I don't think that I would buy an OLED monitor unless they fix the burn-in issue. I had a Samsung Galaxy Note 8 for 4 years and it started to have RU-vid and WhatsApp burned in the screen. That's why I'm more intrested in monitors with technologies such as Mini-LEDs and Micro-LEDs in conjuction with Quantum Dots.

I have a c2 as main monitor since it came out… not burned in. And i use it pretty much daily. I don’t baby the tv either, I play 2 games 90% of the time.. so HUDs are in the same place all the time. The only thing I change was to hide the taskbar, no icons and black background.. which is a pretty small sacrifice for the perfect blacks. And since it’s perfect blacks, I can resize the window with powertoys at pretty much any screen size.. today ultrawide.. tomorrow 16:9.. what a word we live in

I'm sticking to Samsung mini-led monitors (Odyssey Neo G7 ) now, which don't have the drawbacks of OLED. Since I have my monitors on throughout the day for work and in the evenings for gaming, I'd be a prime victim for burn-in.

I've had 2 monitors and 3 OLED TV's over 6 years and every single one had burn in, so never again. I now only own lcd/led, with ZERO chance of burn in. OLED has an amazing picture, but is a massively flawed technology.

Well, LCD TVs actually have a chance of burn-in. I had a (relatively old) 42" Samsung with IPS screen which probably still holds a visible image of "Demon's Souls" title screen burned in on it. Also I once saw an old LCD monitor with a perfectly visible Windows XP wallpaper and crisp icons... when the screen is black. So yeah, it happens to old/cheap screens.

East to prevent this shit. I play wow on a g9 oled 49 inch. Again i play wow like 8-9 hours a day as i work from home and im a loser lmfao. And done this every day since February with no burn in. Be smart about shit and listen to your parents - TURN THAT TV OFF IF YOUR NOT WATCHING IT!!! And you will be fine. Nothing last forever eventually sure it might burn in. But yall act like we arent replacing monitors every 3 or so years im sure some of you hermits dont and you still use your awesome LCD from 04. But im happy with 0 regrets. Live in the moment stop worrying about them what if lol

I want an oled 😂 but im so scared of burn in 😢. Especially i play mmos, so it is not a matter of if but when burn in would set in. I think ips is the best right now , just head empty, set it and forget it. Don’t have to worry about taking care of oled. Hopefully there will be more advances in technology in the near future that makes oled more affordable and burn in never even sets in anymore.

No need to fear burn in on OLED - you can be assured it will happen - it is a feature not a bug of the tech - only variance is how soon it will become noticeable (and then will never become unseen)

Phones seem less destructive for OLED so no surprise burn-in isn't more common. The only time it's on, it's either displaying a notification for a couple seconds or you're actively using it so there's probably not a lot of static image burn-in potential.

Phones use a very different Pixel matrix than qd oled or w oled. Thats the reason they burn in way less. Also they have auto brightness and dont get that bright most of the time.

@@MacTX I have a Samsung S20+. Used VERY intensively: I watch movies, youtube, surf on Chrome, use Discord... so a screen is on for about 3-4 hours on avarage per day for the last 3 years. Also being using the same wallpaper for a very long time. Not a slightest sign of burn in so far. It feels like the screen could last a couple of years more no problem - longer than a battery lmao

People who say they don't have burn in after 10,000 hrs of spreadsheets and gaming , just haven't looked for it / noticed it, which is great for them. If it doesn't bother you, thats a win .... But it's there.

If you get an OLED, I don't recommend using anything but a completely black background so the pixels are off when you walk away to take a piss. Then just turn it off completely if you're going to be away for a long time, also you should set your taskbar to hide away, and if you just sit there & leave a window on chrome open minimize it so the black background is showing & RU-vid won't burn in on your screen. But you see all these extra steps you have to do to make sure your OLED display doesn't burn in, that's the part that sucks, you have to take extra care of your monitor to make sure you don't have any issues.

I've had my CX 48 Oled for 3 years now, and it's been on for over 17,000 hours. And there is not the slightest hint of burn-in. Windows has an easy hide task bar setting. Oled completely gets rid of black area blocking in media content, and for that alone I would never want to go back.

@Safetytrousers Would love to get idea of your average use cases and what you did or did not do in an effort to mitigate burn in. I see so many people beating their chest after 1,000 or 3,000 hours of use and saying they have no burn in see it's no longer a problem. But I'm of the notion that 1,000 or 3,000 hours is still in the infancy of what should be the life span of a tv or monitor especially. I have an IPS display with 35,000 hours on it's backlight and not a hint of issue. Any behavior you routinely do that you can account for that you think has helped the longevity of your set?? Just bought a QD LED 27in 360hz display and would love to be able to get 17,000 hours or more out of it before having to go shopping again.

@@theripper121 My thinking is that if you have not got burn in after more than 3 years of constant daily use, I don't see why it would suddenly start if your habits have not changed. I don't leave any element on the screen for hours. If I go to the local shop or something I put a slideshow video on full screen.

It happens after time because the burn in is from the pixels wearing out. So every oled will get it eventually, it just depends how you use it as to how fast it happens. If you dont max brighness and use varied content the pixels will wear evenly and last you for years and years. How ever constant static images and high brightness you will be lucky to last 3yrs.@Safetytrousers

It's no secret that negative news often captures more attention, but it's important to approach this topic with a nuanced perspective. Let's not forget, every display technology has its lifespan and quirks. CRTs, for instance, weren't immune to wear and tear - think screensavers to prevent burn-in and the gradual dimming over countless hours of use. I vividly recall cranking up the brightness on my CRT to its limits and even removing the anti-glare coating to squeeze out a bit more luminance, not to mention the inevitable yellow tint that crept in over time. LCDs are no exception to aging. Having spent over a decade in color-grading, I've seen firsthand how LCDs can develop tints and color shifts. However, it's crucial to recognize that while OLED burn-in is a possibility, it's not a guaranteed fate for your display, especially with typical use. Even if it does occur, say a faint shadow against a 50% gray background, it's worth pondering - is it truly a deal-breaker? Often, by the time any significant wear sets in, you might be eyeing an upgrade anyway, given the rapid pace of technology. Take my LG C8, for instance - a faithful companion for TV viewing, PS5 gaming, and even some PC tasks, with over 3000 hours clocked in. No burn-in against a 50% gray backdrop. Sure, it's developed a handful of dead pixels, around 20, but they're hardly noticeable from a standard viewing distance and don't detract from the overall viewing experience. The tendency to critique OLED might stem from a place of envy or resistance to change, considering the sheer leap in quality it represents over previous technologies. It's a mindset that can, and should, be shifted. Let's embrace the advancements in display tech, appreciate the superior image quality, motion clarity, and HDR capabilities it brings, and navigate life's technological landscape with an open mind and a sense of wonder.

You are correct that other tech has it's own share of aging problems, but the biggest problem with OLED is price. I'm fine with cheap tech getting a burn-in and getting replaced every couple of years, but when you pay $1000+ for a piece of tech you expect it to last for at least 5-10 years. You say that burn-in is not a guaranteed fate, but it actually is unless one completely changes his ways of using a computer, at which point having an OLED screen is becoming more of a chore rather than a blessing. Most comfortable scenarios of PC usage (when you don't need to ever care about what you show and for how long) become a no-go once you have to babysit your expensive display 24/7 to evade the (eventually inevitable due to the organic nature of it) burn-in. Again, most people would actually embrace it and buy it and just let it burn for all they care to buy a new one in a couple of years... if those were cheap. Like, sub $250 cheap. At current prices it's simply impractical for most people given that their comfortable PC usage scenarios kind of guarantee a burn-in happening in 2-4 years.

Pretty Sure your Philips Envia is already burned in. Check 5-20% Brightness Fullscreen white, FS Grey. Pretty sure outside the 16:9 Area there are differences. My aw3423dwf also has that and RTINGS confirmed that especially UW QD-Oled does burn in very fast in there tests. You wont see the burn in over 25% , but its clearly a very different wear off of the pixels what is known as burn in. I am still very happy with colors and black levels after 1 year but i realy hope dell will replace it after 2 years. I never really wanted UW with glare coating but aceptable miniled va panel with at least 1000 dimming zones were gsrbage back in 2022 like the neo g7. hoping for a 32" 16:9 matte coating 4k oled. preferably W-oled with MLA.

I leave my monitors with live wallpaper for hours and even my nano ips have image retention. Now image what that would do to an Oled. My 6 year old oled tv has dull colors now. Yellow looks green

I have a 4K LG Oled and mainly watch tv, Netflix, Prime etc and a little bit of pc gaming. I’m happy to ‘baby’ my Oled for the visual fidelity 😱🤩🤯🤤🫠 and longevity! Every tv / monitor technology has it drawbacks: TN = poor colour vibrancy and viewing angles (but honestly….who games side on to their monitor 🤦‍♂🤦🤦‍♀🙈)! LCD = halo’ing, not as colourful as OLED and not as responsive as TN monitors. OLED = burn in, generally limited screen warranty for burn in, dead pixels or repairs etc and varying degrees of panel tech resulting in sone times poorer text clarity I’ve personally been happy with all monitors over years whether it being, CRT, HD CRT, TN, LCD, Mini LED, Quantum Dot, OLED etc!

Thinking about getting an OLED monitor and found this video. Some clarification, I think your confusing image retention and burn-in, they're not the same, burn-in is permanent, no pixel/panel refresher can fix this.
