Oliver Reed sees in Alex Higgins a man honest to himself and a man who excepts himself worts and all, but he also saw a genius, a flawed one without doubt, but the spontaneous robust but brilliant way he played the game was obviously god given. When Higgins was at the table he was mesmerizing, and you just couldn't keep your eyes off him. But he drank to much , got into fights and was a loose cannon. But oliver reed observed Higgins he saw a drinker, like himself, who found controversy, like Reed himself many time . but also this man who was an absolute genius. A one off genius , the like we'll never see again. Reed and Higgins lived their life's in the fast line and on the edge, but great characters and both bloody good at what they did.( May they both Rip)
The words 'snooker' and 'genius' don't belong in the same sentence! Higgins was good at knocking balls into holes with a wooden stick - he didn't split the atom, paint the Mona Lisa or write War & Peace FFS! Oliver Reed was a fine actor - probably the finest movie actor Britain ever produced. But he was also an addict who pissed much of his talent up against the wall, and like most addicts, looked for co-conspirators to keep him company. Indeed, he was so desperate for company, he insisted on buying every round. Sad, huh? He found the perfect drinking buddy in Alex Higgins, who at least had the cash - and the Irish generosity - to buy him a few back.
Is that the same Dan Hazelhurst who tricked me into thinking that his RU-vid banner was initially a row of suspended chef's pans, only to discover at second glance they are in fact a row of spun-aluminium caps for a retro amplifier? 🇬🇧🍳🤔
'Oliver Reed died from a heart attack during a break from filming Gladiator in Valletta, Malta, on the afternoon of 2 May 1999. According to witnesses, he drank eight pints of German lager, a dozen shots of rum, half a bottle of whiskey and a few shots of Hennessy cognac, in a drinking match against a group of sailors on shore leave from the H.M.S. Cumberland at a local pub called "The Pub". His bar bill totalled a little over 270 Maltese lira (almost £450). After beating five much younger Royal Navy sailors at arm-wrestling, Reed suddenly collapsed, dying en route to a hospital in an ambulance. He was 61 years old.' What a fucking legend!
@@justvaperNot a lot of time tbh - Perhaps as much time as you spend giving 'advice' to people on RU-vid?.. I agree I didn't need to add the last two words. But I chose to, because the fawning over this arrogant alcoholic (by men a lot of the time) is irritating to me. You know about his relationship with Keith Moon? - . Keith Moon - the Who drummer, obviously, who died way too young in his 30's.. Isolated from his 'friends' - The one who died from excess or drugs alcohol and unchecked hedonism? He needed good friends.. If he'd had more good friends and fewer bellends like this guy to fk around with, he may have got his life together. He may have lived a full life. So no apologies for calling this guy a bellend. He took pleasure in humiliating and intimidating people. My choice to comment. :-)
@@singin8324 He made 'sense' mostly as self justification! I only found him interesting when he could be persuaded to talk about Film Acting! Which wasn't often!
Mad as a box of frogs 🐸, but so very talented. There will ever be only one Oliver Reed. A truly talented and convincing actor and one of life's genuine characters.
5:49 The look on Olie's face when the interviewer asks him a question he has already explained in his preceeding comments. Surprised he didn't roar at the guy.
Ollie is very close to my heart. He was one of my Father's favorite actors. Once my Dad got drunk and angry and kicked my tricycle while I was riding it and I fell down the stairs still hanging on to it. I was three. He didn't mean to, but caused me a deep cut below the chin that needed surgery You can barely see the scar now, but for years, while I was a little girl, it looked really scary. You could see all the stitches marks and it extended to the sides of my face. I would watch Ollie's movies with my Father, and my Dad would point out at his face and say: "See? He's got scars on his face and he is tough and cool, and everyone loves him". "But I'm a girl, Dad...". "It doesn't matter", he'd say. "No one messes with him and no one will mess with you". The scar became virtually invisible, but my Dad always felt guilty about it, and for the rest of his life, he would touch it every time he was near me, even on his death bed. The booze killed him. Thank you Ollie for being a bond between me and my Dad. I hope he is with you in Heaven.
ill tell you a story when we were filming we were waiting for Ollie and a man walked in the room ..it was Oliver Reed looking like he was 25 yrs old….then he said "anyone seen the old man " :) haha
joe moonblue My Dad always owned one or two brown-gold turtle neck sweaters like the one Ollie's character wears in Sitting Target. How was Ollie looking like a 25 year old? He changed a lot, depending on his weight and styling. In the movies you'd see him looking somewhat heavy, with graying hair and then, boom! new hair color and weight, like in Castaway, and he'd look 15 years younger. A chameleon on and off the screen.
But you did work with Ollie, which is awesome. And Yes, I've seen Mark Reed in a documentary and he looks a lot like his Father. I believe his daughter took after Ollie too. Those are some strong genes. You see my family and nobody looks alike to anybody else. We all look like the milkman did it. Our family pictures look like Benetton ads. :)
you can see Oliver is happy when hes talking, but behind that you see an unhappy man, full of conflict with himself, and his thoughts, and that will kill you in the end.
That's everybody I thought! To quote Jung "show me a sane man and I will cure him" Both characters had ADHD or were bipolar. Dyslexia was an issue too! I have a feeling these attributes simply lift the veil that most are blinded by. It also would appear to accompany greatness/genius!
Andy Nixon Yes, I was thinking along the lines of a real life Mr Potato head. Such a odd thought for such a genius I know. May I say very well spotted sir.
"Obscure friendship based upon his lunacy" lol "Beyond that's a mere pink" then a big pause deliberately to lure the interviewer into interrupting. Deadpan clown, bloody brilliant
Alway got excited when he was on telly very funny man and a brilliant actor I can't name one British actor who has his personality! Or any actor come to think of it !
This is like a bo selecta sketch. You could not make this stuff up and if he did it’s genius! He asks that interviewer do you understand? He says yes!!!! Brilliant stuff
By the way meant to say I Fucking love the films you've been posting. Really beautifully done. Never knew you had an artistic bone in your body! Certainly didn't show it way back when!
A one off was Ollie but he was always performing and waffles away. His autobiography is entertaining though because at least he finishes his sentences. He was spoken of with a mixture of admiration and loathing in the part of South London where I grew up and he hailed from.
He could well have played a magnificent Teddy Roosevelt... could he not? "There are Artists who wrest us up and place us into Themselves. These are The Ones Who continue to wrest us up... even beyond Their Rests In Peace."-gilpin 5417
even here this man is far beyond any crummy little actor today. such a shame men like he no longer exist. thank god for technology as we can still see what a real man is. and dont give me any of your alcoholic bullshit we all have demons.
We exist. We just don't go for the entertainment industry to keep a roof on the house, or family fed. Those days are long gone. Never interrupt others, and certainly don't interrupt me when I have the floor.
yes Jim it was an interview for I'M NO ANGEL- ALEX Hurricane Higgins documentary can't put a link in here for some reason buts its on my channel in 6 parts
Actor Richard Burton, famously hard drinker , could quote reams of Shakespeare when drunk. My Dad tho not in that league , could quote the v famous 20 verse poem 'The Highwayman' perfectly. 😁 "The road was a ribbon of darkness across the purple moor & the Highwayman came riding , up to the old Inn door ..."
@@sarahholland2600 actually, what my point was....is that good 'ol Oli could ad lib these incredible monologues that sounded incredibly Shakespearian - and in this certain one alex higgins was his main "character" ....much like a Henry 4th / Falstaffian type.... ie - Oli was a fabulous raconteur.....compare him with todays monosyllabic hollywood morons :)
At 8:45 - I had no idea what he was talking about and he must have sensed it himself, that's why he made the interviewer repeat it in simpler words, lol!! And I had no idea who the crazy man was that he was talking about and how he thought he could make him money or who he was referring to as 'Hurricane' till I looked u;p Alex Higgins - the legendary snooker player (for anyone like myself who didn't know😐)
He says Paul Newman and the other guy. He doesn't know George C. Scott (And at that time was pretty known), one of the best actors ever and he forgot about Jackie Gleason. In which Mr. Olivier himself said was the best actor. Really, you see kids, this is what drinking does to you. Especially over indulgence. Not only do you forget while you are drinking but after you sober up the next day you forget. UNBELIEVABLE, even Tom Hanks (We all admit is big) had to convince himself and focus not to be nervous while around Mr. Gleason, as everone that meets him and works with him is nervous, because he is what you call a superstar, bigger than life, but when Hanks was around Newman he didn't have to do that because he and others weren't scared around him. And it turns out that Mr. Gleason is just a regular Joe that likes to put them away. But, again, when you drink you really mess up your mind. Thanks. James.
only cowards, globalists, ultra totaitatuan left wingers are now allowed on television. the forsed mask wearing and forced vaccinations against all basic rights and conservative values would make him outraged and probably resist this tyranny with psychical force had he still be young enough and live because whats going in the biggest fear propaganda campaign in world history. notice how itsnsomehow a clever political virus that leaves alone BLMnriotees who serve the elite agends but allegedky attacks innocent beach goes a political virus from the start and men would like nmmd be on the frontnline resisting the willing destruction of our country and its people's self respext and libeety musy be foughy for bevause once you accept the furst stslin moves you arenow a medieval serf, not a free man and they openly censr paper and media acriss thrh biard now. just say "no, i will not go along eith this" and therefore there communist coup is unenforceable. jone ofnit has basis inxscientific fact abyway and even if it did you dont muzzle the entire population for which 99.8% have no problem whatsoever. its a pretext for treason and mass deception.wothxalalll the media on board wihtout any studied scientifically.in any facts whatsoever.
Tavy@ i totally respect alex higgins the snooker player 147% he was the greatest player i ever saw! Alex couldv won the world title at least 4 times i seen. And maybe 5, 6, 7 times. But alex played to the audience and it cost im more than he won, but what a player! I remember the 1980 world final against thorburn that alex shouldv won easy so he tried to pot a very hard yellow and missed it. if he played safe he wouldv won it that year as well. But i dont thinck i wouldv liked alex higgins the man. Seemingly he was very cheeky, arroggant, and always starting fights wich he never won. And full of himself. Plus i couldnt understand 1 word he was saying! But R.I.P ALEX and thancks for the memories !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1989 in London Mr Higgins was doing a charity show in earls court I think Australian folk know the area , Mr Reed was with his friend Mr O'Toole that's what I heard anyway from good source in Limerick !
Thats freaky as fuck that lamp moving around. I wouldnt be surprised if its the 'spirit' of Alex saying hi to Ollie. Who knows? It's nice that they were good buddies.
