Xanadu is the soundtrack of the 1980 musical film of the same name, featuring the Australian singer Olivia Newton-John and the British group Electric Light Orchestra (ELO). It was released in June 1980 on MCA Records in the United States and July 1980 by Jet Records in the United Kingdom.
Xanadu is a 1980 American family musical fantasy film written by Richard Christian Danus and Marc Reid Rubel, and directed by Robert Greenwald. It stars Olivia Newton-John, Michael Beck and Gene Kelly in his final film role. The film features music by Newton-John, Electric Light Orchestra, Cliff Richard, and The Tubes.

I was at Cliff's 75th birthday concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London, in 2015. Olivia surprised him and came on stage. They did this song. It was brilliant. Cliff helped Olivia's career in the 70's. He used to have a regular Saturday night show on British tv and Olivia would appear on it. I love Cliff's Soulicious album. He duets with some of the best soul singers on that album. Freida Payne, Candi Staton, Roberta Flack , Percy Sledge, Peabo Bryson, Billy Paul, plus lots of others. If you can get it in the States, it's a brilliant album. x

Love ONJ! Cliff Richard had already been around for 20-some years by 1980 ... he started off as an Elvis-like rocker teen from Great Britain in the late 1950s to early 1960s. ... In 1976, he also had a Top 10 hit in the U.S. called "Devil Woman."

This was from The US Series The Midnight Special in 1980 that was on the Air from 1972-1981. What was so amazing about this Show was that it bridged the Gap between American Bandstand & Soul Train where they had a veritable who's who in Rock, Soul, Country, Pop. It was also the Show that Jermaine Jackson did after leaving The Jackson Five and staying at Motown.

An interesting side note is that Cliff's old backing band, The Shadows, (who were "major" in their own right in the 60s) had a great deal with ONJ's early career and early albums. She was engaged for a couple of years to Shadows guitarist Bruce Welch. Her long term producer John Farrar was a member of the Shads for a couple of years in the 70s. Welch, Farrar & bass player John Rostill produced some of her earliest albums and Welch & Rostill wrote some of her early hits like Please Mr Please, If You Love Me Let Me Know & Let Me Be There. Farrar & ONJ relocated to the USA in the mid 70s. Farrar's wife Pat was ONJ's partner in a duo act when she first came to the UK in the later 60s.

Cliff Richard is really old school as far as pop music was concerned. He was seen as the UK's answer to, 'Elvis', in the late 1950's! He was with the band, The Shadows, for most of the 60's before going solo and having a number of hits in the UK and abroad for the next 30 years! He was dubbed, 'the peter pan of pop', due to the fact that he never seemed to age.

Love your reactions, especially to ONJ. Just trivial back story since you don't know who Cliff Richard is. He gave Liv her start on his TV show in Britain. He's known as "The British Elvis". He's the biggest selling artist in the UK. He just came off his latest tour in October... on his 81st birthday! He's the only artist to have #1 songs in the last 8 consecutive decades. You should know a couple of his hits that made it in America ... We Don't Talk Anymore and Devil Woman most widely known here. Love to see more of your reactions on him as well. He's been my idol since I was 16 living in Germany.

Oh I forgot to mention that large majority of her Songs (including This One) was written by John Farrar. In Australia he was in a Group called The Strangers but they have been friends since the late 1960's. If you can check out Australian Stars of the 1960's. Alot of Talent came from there most didn't make it on US Soil but you see that American R & B was a major influence. At 16 she won a Talent Contest sponsored by Johnny O'Keefe one of Australia's Top Performers/TV Legends.

Olivia sang in Australia with Pat Carroll, and she ended up married to John Farrar, and the 3 of them are still close friends. Pat, John and Olivia were all at Royal Albert Hall in London (in the audience) for Cliff's 75th Birthday concert in 2015, and Olivia surprised Cliff on stage with a huge cake, and later joined him for Suddenly. The crowd went wild !!! If you haven't seen this yet, some very clever person put this together - Cliff and Olivia doing Suddenly in about 1982-ish on the right of the screen, and live, in 2015. The Man himself is Cliff Richard who is an Icon on the UK Music Scene. His career was patterned after Elvis Presley's and he is the most successful Male UK Artist of all time, he's even been Knighted as a "Sir" by The Queen for his contribution to Pop and he also appeared on her 50th Jubilee Anniversary Special. He had a successful Variety Show and Aretha Franklin guest starred and his name was even Mentioned on Coronation Street, The UK's longest running Soap Opera as well as the UK Award Winning Prison Drama Bad Girls. Cliff's inspiration was Elvis for sure, and at the beginning, in 1958 he tried to be like him, and did a few musicals in the early 60's. . But within a couple of years, he came into his own :)

Wonderful reaction Empress! I was shown your reaction and channel by RU-vid because of this song. You see, I’ve been watching a cover that’s kinda awesome. I’ve been following the female singer since October and the male since April when he made a mini-doc on her!. Now he’s singing with her! How’s that! This is their second song together! This cover is just a few weeks old. Believe it or not, the female singer is kinda sorta known for her covers of a different singer. Dame ONJ and Sir Cliff at their best! These two had been singing together for nearly a decade before they recorded this wonderful John Farrar song for the Xanadu soundtrack. Cliff is HUGE in England. He is referred to as the British Elvis, though he never caught on in the U.S. He gave ONJ her first big break, appearing and singing with him on his tv show, and Suddenly was her way of returning the favor. There are lots of old clips of them singing together here. They don't call her the queen of duets for nothing 😊 Another great reaction, Empress!

When they performed this on The Midnight Special in July 1980, she told The Audience That Cliff was instrumental in helping her get her start back in the day. Cliff Richard was one of those artists who never really cracked the US market. But he was huge in other parts of the world. He's sold over 250 million records throughout his career so nothing to sneeze at those numbers.

This is a perfect love ballad! Cliff Richard is ONJ’s best duet partner, hands down! They have a long and strong connection that has lasted over 5 decades! There are 2 music videos of this track, one is the clip in the film “Xanadu” with Michael Beck, her costar, which is a cute look into the magic of a Hollywood set! The 2nd music video for this song is a wonderful segment from her best Television Special “Hollywood Nights!” I really recommend you reacting to that visual because they visually complement each other in the video! They sing with so much conviction! They blend perfectly and it’s a believable duet! The song was a hit but only went to #20 on the pop charts because it was the 5th Top 20 hit from “Xanadu,” film which was a major feat, back in the day! I loved seeing your reaction to this! This and her duet with David Foster called “The Best Of Me” are my favorite duets from her!:)

For ONJ fans btw a miniseries was done of her life not too long ago. Worth a look if your a fan. Hard to see Delta as Olivia if you are an Aussie but she gave her best, I thought the girl that played a young Olivia was great. Still enjoyable tho imho.
