Olson - Boards of Canada (cover with Moog Matriarch, Mother 32, and DFAM)

The warbly, blissed-out sun-salute of "Olson" is one of the most perfect little songs in all of electronic music. One way I like to break in any new musical gear is to try the song out with it. And since I'm going to start posting more of my music (covers and originals) on RU-vid, this seemed like a good place to start.

the first time i heard olson i was struck by a deep sense of longing to be somewhere else. somewhere that felt like the track sounded. 17 years later and i feel the exact same. this song is eternal, perpetual in every sense. primordial.

10/10 IMO, especially considering most of their music from this era was made on old knackered analogue gear so replicating any of the sounds would almost impossible.

Unfortunately, I didn't save detailed patch notes anywhere, but IIRC what really made the chords sound like the original was running a random LFO into both VCF 1 and the input for LFO 2, which modulates VCF 2. This imitates the original tape warble passably well. After that, you can pretty much follow the patch cables and dial it in pretty quickly. Hope that helps!

Thanks! The Matriarch definitely isn’t cheap, but it’s a good value for what you get. A lot depends on your goals and style: I really wanted modular routing and I like instruments that are hard to replace with software, so it made sense for me, but if you don’t need CV, I’d look at other analog poly synths.
