Eumenes of Kardia, executed with reluctance in 316 BCE

One of the most famous Successors, Eumenes of Kardia was a Greek who had risen to prominence as Alexander's secretary. Due to Plutarch's Life of Eumenes and his reputation as a champion for the Argead dynasty, Eumenes has largely been hailed as a hero. While Eumenes was admirable on many levels, I argue that neither the man himself nor his motives were as pure as the driven snow.

I was allways asonished by the fact that the warriors of tiny Macedon managed to defeat the mighty Persian empire, but now I'm even more astonished by how incedibly treacherous they were.

To be fair he could hve died from poisoning and his child was murdered after he died by cassander. He was rightfully paranoid

Well Alexander had the best teachers of his time, and his father was a great king and in diplomatics, so he had a great advantage with knonlage and great warriors who had experince with king phillip the 2nd

While Alexander was a great man himself, the Macedonian troops was built and tempered by King Philip II. Without those experienced soldiers, Alexander would never be able to conquer Persia.

Its really good, but its still on Pausanias, it has a looooong way to go.

A good manga, but maybe a little bit too violent for some scenes, notably on the treatment of Olympias(the scene where she killed her lover and his corpse is devoured by Olympias snake, before Alexander is particularly shocking It spreads bad reputation of this kind of comics. I prefer Cesare of Fuyumi Soryo on Cesare Borgia.

Story time with Thersites the Historian. Very well done, sir. I like Plutarch, but he's too silly and lived 4 centuries after the events for me not to question his interpretations. Anyway, he's the best we got, so he'll have to sufice. I wish I had a time machine. :-)

I vehemently disagree with your assessement that Eumenes was stupid for actually trying to participate in the Diodachi wars simply because he was a Greek and thus is disadvantaged. At this point, Greek and the vast majority of their world is under Macedon and thus even if he does not try, he will always be a second tier citizen at best. Case in points, Roman treatments of others. This was the best chance he would ever receive to actually hold ppwer in this new Hellenized wolrd.

I totally agree, after watching the video and hearing his opinion I wanted to share my opinion as well. What was Eumenes supposed to do? He had multiple opportunities to support Macedonian Generals but he refused, why would he ever support someone else just because they're Macedonian. While Eumenes wasn't a virtuous man as Plutarch thought, he was smart and cunning and survived in a world where he was severely disadvantaged

I admire this gent. I hope his Antogonists felt great remorse at the weak murder / execution of this noble gent. Humans always looks kindly to kindly victors.

There's so much lack of loyalty in these guys, it's hard to even listen. It's jarring enough when you hear about the other Diadochi, but then you get to Eumenes and like half his career sounds like "I hope they don't defect". Seriously these guys are tied for the worst and best soldiers ever. Talented enough to conquer Persia. Worthless enough that they'd betray their own mother for a nickel.

There's no way you're going to burn 1000 talents of gold in a tent fire.

I'm not sure what to think of him, he distrusted his potential allies, stuck for the losing side and betrayed people that pardoned him.

For me, Eumenes was the most honorable man who followed alexander and truly a talent. He actually did his job when everyone else schemed for themselves.

He broke trust with Antigonus because he got too ambitious and wanted more than what he was capable of. Antigonus and Eumenes would have been great working together.

According to what I have read Eumenes gleefully accepted the 500 talents of gold & silver permission slip of withdraw at the treasury house of Kyinda. As Polyperchon suggested he used the funds to procure more infantry and cavalry in Cappadocia and later Phoenicia. Part of Polyperchon's plan was for Eumenes to construct a sizable fleet of some 100 triremes (almost certainly requiring additional funds be withdrawn from Kyinda) the purpose of which was to transport much of the gold and silver housed within the treasury house thought to amount to some 10,000 talents. When this was done Eumenes loaded the gold onto the fleet after which it departed for Greece only to be intercepted and defeated by an Antigonid fleet commanded by Nikanor which was itself fresh off a victory against a fleet loyal to Polyperchon in the Propontis Sea. Thus Antigonus hit the Jackpot with the treasury of Kyinda falling into his hands.
