5:29 If your partner shells up like that in sparring, stop punching them. You're *not* in a fight, you don't gain anything from "winning" a sparring match or even practicing punching someone not prepared to punch back. Ask them "What are you doing that for?" and *help them*, because what they're doing will get them hurt in a real boxing match or, god forbid, a real fight.

Love the video Tony! A sad story. Yesterday, I witnessed a young 20-so year old male die of a heart attack in our boxing gym. No hard sparring, just light cardio. I watched as they did chest compressions for one hour, shocked him, and finally drove him off to the hospital, where he shortly died. This video reminds me that safety is utmost important. Not only is sparring etiquette important, but also train when you are well rested, healthy, and not in starvation mode. RIP my friend 😢

Happened to me about a week and a half ago. The gym had issues with this one guy because of his recklessness. Well I decided to spar him, give him the benefit of the doubt. Well I said light spar, lightly tapped him with a jab and a cross so I sent the tone. He responded with a heavy overhand to the face. I’m ok you did it now, and I ramped up. He got banned from open mats and got put on supervised spars. He also had a spar. What does he do, kicks the training partner during a boxing spar.

something sort of similar happened to me.. i did my first sparring session last week after a month of boxing. i told the partner to go easy. after a few minutes he said i had very good defense...and things went downhill, dont know why. i was touching him up a lot, but very lightly - not hard. i was having fun. but during counter punch practice, i threw some light jabs, and he threw a heavy hook, and i really felt he was throwing with bad intentions. the head caoch was not there this time, but i dont know what to do besides avoid this guy next time. i told the guy after the spar, 'you go too hard man' and hes like 'you did too' and i said 'its hard to tell if youre punching too hard, but i told you to let me know if i am' and he said 'well we got some good work in' lol what a tool. any advice, please?
@joshc.6706
@joshc.6706 Год назад
@@stringsnare So it sounds like you handled it properly. I mean you told him to go light and to let you know if you go too hard, presumably because you know you’re new to it. So if this guy wants to spar, you’re not obligated to spar him, you can say no. It sounds like common sense but so many people don’t want to make it feel weird. But no one is looking to get hurt unnecessarily because there’s enough chance under ideal circumstances in boxing. There’s a whole lot of reasons this could’ve happened. Is he newer too? Or he could’ve gotten pissed because you’re newer and you were touching him up, not saying it’s your fault. That’s on him for having a fragile ego if that’s the case. If you’re newer to the gym it’s a feeling out process. Not sure how the head coach is, or how your gym operates. If it persists. Can you go directly to the head coach saying you’re not entirely comfortable working with this person and describe the situation? Or do they prefer you go to an assistant coach and then if the assistant coach can’t handle it, he/she makes the head coach aware of the situation. To me it wouldn’t be the worst idea for you to ask a coach to supervise the next session between you and this individual. Hope all goes well for you
@stringsnare
@stringsnare Год назад
@@joshc.6706 thanks so much for reaching back to me so quick, much appreciated. i am very friendly with the head coach - in fact, all the coaches are very nice there, everyone is nice, so i was surprised to encounter that - but at the end of the day, its a boxing gym which probably attracts egos of all types. the crazy thing is, the day before we sparred (this past sunday), i saw him on friday night while i was doing some weight lifting there (trying to get back in shape). there was something i just didn't like about the guy based on how he carried himself. i believe this sparring partner has been training for quite some time. it was kind of weird because after we fought he was asking me my weight, and age and was like 'so your lean' (im 35, he is 25). its almost like he was competing with me. i get the sense it was his ego, i am quite sensitive so i can feel people out, and that was the vibe i got esp. based on the questions he was asking me, it was just weird. we usually end up being partnered by the coaches, in which case im scared/not sure how i can refuse politely to spar that guy. btw, he was i think 6 or 6'1, i am 5'10 and 154lb to give you some idea.
@joshc.6706
@joshc.6706 Год назад
@@stringsnare not a problem. yeah unfortunately boxing can attract so many egos. Yeah if you feel comfortable talk to the coaches and bring the situation up to them if they don’t and, if there are a good amount of y’all to try not to pair y’all up. However if you’re the only similar sized person or there isn’t too many people it makes it harder to avoid. If that’s the case in my experiences never a problem to ask a coach to keep an eye on this. There’s other students so unfortunately if they don’t see it or looking for it to begin with it might get missed. Also is he known to do stuff like that with others? I know you said you were new so maybe not as was to tell. I’m 28 so I get it, 25 wasn’t that far away, I’m humble but i know a ton of people who weren’t. It sounds like your coaches are very good, so if it persists I’d imagine they’ll do something. There’s really no good outcomes to having someone ramp up on new people unless warranted (not saying you, just in general if a new person comes in super cocky and needs humbled for example). But yeah definitely some weird questions. I’m not sensitive to that, but I’m very good at reading people and I’d be thinking “this jagoff isn’t really trying to size me up right now and compare” I don’t do that and I’m only 5’7 so it happens so I don’t say anything and I let my boxing do the talking. Pisses me off nonetheless. I go by the motto “No Bark, all bite”. Seems you got a good sense on how to handle this, best of luck in the future

What I love about Tony's video's, apart from the amazing and surprisingly generous tution he offers the RU-vid community in terms of true and invaluable boxing tution, is his consistent example of practice what you preach. He loads Mal practice among sparring partners and encourages good sportsmanship practices among sparring partners. Whilst I've never been a boxer of any sort, tbh, I once found myself sparring a very green and young fellow who was paired with me for that session because of his promising talent, on his side, and my not shying away from the challenge, my side. There was an unfortunate moment where his youthful skill wasn't enough to prevent a lean body shot I had landed on him, and truth be told out of spite for the schooling I was receiving Infront of the gym from such a young lad, but after seeing he required a moment of recovery I decided to remove that option from the rest of the rounds despite the trainer asking me to repeat again as to teach the boy about holes in one's game and perseverance. I felt I would have negated my opportunity to learn about my weakness of being bested in the other areas as a much older man, against a kid(though better skilled still a kid in age ya dig?) And so in the end I feel I made the nature decision to test myself and while allowing a developing young boxing mind feel their own progress without inhibition. To prove this correct, I've done nothing ever in boxing but that kid has since gone on to be a pro. He still contacts me once in a while but I'm not credited for his success. And rightly so, I'm nothing in what became his journey through ranks and other gyms. I'm just glad I wasn't a force for bad in his development and I credit that for why we can still catch up when he is back in town. Treat sparring as the opportunity it's supposed to be. Practice for development and not practice of your best

You are right, one time i knocked some out during sparing, that person never come back at training, never learn how to protect yourself and its bad for a business too.

The truth is that boxing is raw enough without people flexing. Let your hands do the talking, not your ego. And always agree beforehand if you're going light or heavy.

At 3.22 the big Black guy we with a yellow sleeves t-shirt is Alain Ngalani, a MMA fighter with a very low record more dedicated to his physique than to fighting.

People think boxing is easy. It's one of the most counterintuitive things you'll ever do. Leaning into punches, relaxing while someone is trying to hit you. If you want to spar, make sure your trainer has your best interests at heart and doesn't throw you in as 'fresh meat'.

This is the one thing I always worry about sparring, where I might be pitted against somebody who gets angry too easily, or doesn't know how to dial it back 😥 In any case, major congrats on 800k, Tony! So happy to see you grow so much! 👏🥰

Exactly bro when i sparred someone who went there for 3 years and the 2nd best boxer in the gym i only went there for a month and he sparred me like it was a real fight, i asked him can you please go a little easier, and the guy was like “but you have to give it all you got” So i got beat up for 5 rounds until i got hit with a nasty body shot in the 5th round then i quit. Not a good start for my boxing journey.

I stayed anyway and got beaten from pillar to post, best thing was it was my own gym fighters thay did it. I learned absokutely nothing from it.

I hate when I spar people and they go all out for 30 seconds and then want to stop because they're gassed out. That's not any way to get better because obviously in any fight you're gonna keep going and get rocked. Although I feel that's something the coach should bring attention to as well.

I've been sparring against guys when they're coaches are there in their corner and I've never seen so many rules made up in the middle of a sparring round when they see their fighter not doing well. I got called for wrestling and told "you ever wrestle against one of my guys again I'll kick you out of the gym," when I did a simple position switch when the guy had me backed into the corner. Lightly touched his shoulders and turned around him to switch our positions and turned the tide. Coach was piiiissed

I have a karate and boxing back ground. I wanted to learn how to throw leg kicks so I joined an MMA gym. Before getting into the scenario let me explain I am extremely flexible and throw a lot of different types of kicks in sparring, all of which have an extreme amount of control when thrown to the body / head. First night I join the sparring session I have 2 rounds where i constantly get swept by thai fighters, I loved it because it made me adjust. I got paired with another individual, I threw a jab followed by a question mark kick to the head with 5% power. It was in front of the coach and he started laughing. At that moment the guy I was sparring lost it, he rushed in with a leg kicked clipped me with a solid right and i fell to my knees, wobbled. My ego got in the way and we started throwing blows like it was a fire fight. After the sparring session finished it turns out he had 5 professional fights. I asked the coach "do you always let your pros lose control like that?" and he said "it's a fight gym. I want fighters." That day I cancelled my 150$/month membership and never went back again. Sparring should be controlled unless you know the person well enough to pick up the intensity. I have seen fighters career aspirations crushed in the gym because of uncontrolled sparring. Moral of the story PLEASE SPAR CORRECTLY!

Many guys don't want apologies or to be shown care from someone who just dropped them. It may seem like a silly ego thing, but it's the same in life. - If interviewing for a job, but someone else gets it, you want that guy checking up on you making sure you're okay? - If trying to date a girl, but another man gets her, you want an apology from him? When embarrassed or hurt, opponents apologizing can add insult to injury.
